==============================
1 IF ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which
are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the
earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye
also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;
fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil
concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the
children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in
them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice,
blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the
old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in
knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor
uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but
Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness,
longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any
man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you,
so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the
bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the
which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the
Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name
of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by
him.
18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is
fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against
them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is
well pleasing unto the Lord.
21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be
discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to
the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in
singleness of heart, fearing God:
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and
not unto men;
24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of
the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which
he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Seems as if the writer of this letter believed that there is one person
called God and a separate person called Christ. Interesting that apparently
many "Chrisitans" disagree with him or her. Oh yes, this was only Paul,
according to most people.
> 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the
> earth.
Things of earth are things like gold, silver, money, cars, houses, expensive
clothing, expensive food, etc. Things above? Well, aren't they things like
charity (The pure love of Christ), peace, joy, etc? Sort of like the fruit
of the Spirit?
> 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Dead to the things of this world, of course. Does that mean anything at all
with regard to being concerned with politics?
> 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye
> also appear with him in glory.
Our life has nothing to do with our education, our emplyment etc? "The
world" does not see it that way.
> 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;
> fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil
> concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
These things are our members? I have read this several (perhaps even many)
times, and the language never quite struck me. I think something is
"strange" about this sentence. I think here the word "mortify" at least
suggests "put to death".
> 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the
> children of disobedience:
> 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in
> them.
Paul is telling the saints in Colasse that they had Walked" or "livedin" all
the things listed in verse 5. By implication, he may be telling us that as
members of mortal humanity we also have done the same.
> 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice,
> blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
And he is now counseling them (and us) to put off all the things in verse 5
as well as the things he lists in verse 8. Do we as followers of Jesus
Christ put off our anger, or do we attempt to justify it? Do we really
understand what blasphemy is? Wow, here he stops preaching and goes to
meddling, when he speaks of "filthy communication out of your mouth". Where
would television be if we all followed this counsel?
> 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the
> old man with his deeds;
There go our politicians! Of course we cannot excuse ourselves.
> 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in
> knowledge after the image of him that created him:
This seems to indicate that Paul, if he wrote this, did not really think
that Jesus Chirst did all that needed to be done and all that we had to do
was relax and enjoy it. Unless this is not Paul, or unless it has been
incorrectly recorded or translated, Paul said that the people he was
addressing had "put off the old man" and had ""put on the new man".
> 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor
> uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but
> Christ is all, and in all.
This one might be a bit embarassing for some of our earlier leaders. I think
I would like to see an explanation of how Christ is all and in all, except
for "the Negro".
> 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
> bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness,

"Bowels"?
splagchnon {splangkh'-non}
Greek: noun neuter
Possible Definitions:
1) bowels, intestines, (the heart, lungs, liver, etc.)
1a) bowels
1b) the bowels were regarded as the seat of the more violent passions,
such as anger and love; but by the Hebrews as the seat of the tenderer
affections, esp. kindness, benevolence, compassion; hence our heart (tender
mercies, affections, etc.); a heart in which mercy resides
splagchnon {splangkh'-non}
Greek: noun neuter
probably strengthened from splen (the "spleen");
Translated as:
bowels (9 times)
inward affection (1 time)
tender mercy (1 time)
Total: 11 times
Strong's Number 4698

> 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any
> man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you,

This must be important since we are told it often enough
D&C 64:10
10 I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required
to forgive all men.
But I have heard High Priests in their 8th decade of life talk about how
they cannot forgive certain people for things done decades ago. Of course
nations have difficulty forgiving other nations as well. Do the commandment
of God apply to nations or only individuals? (Note that nations are made up
of individuals)
> 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the

He is saving the best to last, isn't he?
> 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the

> 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
> teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and

Here, among other things, we find why it is not well for disciples of Jesus
Christ to lead a solitary life.
> 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name
> of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by
> him.
This one sort of tells us not to think more highly of ourselves than we
ought to think. (Romans 12:3)
> 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is
> fit in the Lord.
Submit? Paul, you mean women should knuckle under and do as their husbands
say in all things? Maybe that "as it is fit in the Lord" means something
other than "because it is fit for women to submit".
> 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against
> them.
Why would a husband be bitter against his wife?
> 20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is
> well pleasing unto the Lord.
>
> 21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be
> discouraged.
This one seems to have been a big problem for me. My oldest son is now 58
years old and my youngest is 36. I am afraid that I often provoked them to
anger and discouraged them. (I think the word anger may not be in the Greek)
> 22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to
> the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in
> singleness of heart, fearing God:
I think the word "servants" here could be replaced with "employees" with no
harm to the meaning. If an employee cannot do what he/she has been hired to
do, without complaining, he/she should seek other employment.
> 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and
> not unto men;
We are responible for what we do. Responsible to God first of all.
> 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of
> the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Reminds me of "When you are in the service of your fellow men, you are only
in the service of your God". If we could remember that, it would put a
different "shine" on even our drudgery in the most onerous of jobs.
> 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which

I try to picture myself in the future, in the celestial
kingdom. What will it be like? I don't know, but I know
there will be family, and work, and enjoyment. I know
something about the character of God, so I picture myself
with qualities like that in that setting, and try to draw
attitudes and energy from it to use in this life.
> > 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
>
> Dead to the things of this world, of course. Does that mean anything at all
> with regard to being concerned with politics?
Politics today pretty much has to involve the existing
parties. There are three, really: the Repooplicans, the
Demoncrats, and the Opportunists. The Opportunists just
infiltrate the other two. They gravitate to whichever party
they can use to advantage, like a virus taking over a host
cell. The power pendulum is swinging back, so look for
them to shift over to the other party. This is where we
can maybe help a little - by participating in the local
caucuses, where we can get sent to the county and state
assemblies, where we can vote down candidates from the
Opportunist party. What the voters get after that is
just a choice between whatever two candidates the county
and state assemblies downselect to. When good people crowd
the caucuses, I am content; things will go well.
