(and ice water?)

Was looking at champagne in the store today, and was admiring a bottle of
2000 Dom Perignon. Until I saw the price tag.

I guess I'll just have to select something from my liquor cabinet instead.
Maybe a 142 proof bourbon or a nice Irish. Or I could crack open that
bottle of cognac I've stashed away.

Although toast and ice water sounds good too (Paula, we miss you!).

At any rate, Bemerried New Year to all o' you punks!

I've got some ginger schnapps that was given to me that I'm not
especially fond of. I may have to figure out how to get my Weimaraner
Shova to lap it up; he's terrified of fireworks and we live like a
mile from the Muckleshoot reservation.

We coulda had toast. I made chocolate bread and vanilla butter to
take to my friends' house to have with the champagne, but it didn't
occur to us to toast the bread.

But the bread 'n butter is somedamfine. So is the champagne.

I donut know if fireworks went off early, late, or right on time, nor whether
any bullets fell nearby. I went to bed at around 9pm ... and managed to sleep
straight through to 3am. (These days, that's about two hours more than I can
usually manage at a time, so yay.) So when I woke up it was Teh Future. Again.

Now lemme just find my cane so I can whap those teenagers about the shins with
it...

Because it's old, so it's probably been sitting around forever and should
be cheaper than the newer stuff.

Yeah, but they use beetles to give it that red color. Yuck! Beetle juice!

Oh - 1982. Then you probably got it for a couple of bucks. Cool.

nah, bollocks. anyone who's ever seen what's left over where a VW's
been parked knows that Beetle juice is a thick, gritty black.

Evan Williams, Calvados, and lots of Yuengling Lager provided my New

I'll see your offering and raise more Evan Williams, Laird's apple jack
and some Shiner Bock. With a side of BBQ pork ribs.

It hasn't been in the bottle that long. Champagne can be aged in vats
(or soemthing) for some time. It needs to bottle-fermented, dégorgé,
and (de préférence) consumed within a short time after bottling.

Oh, I didn't know that. I don't like Champagne much better than
sparkling grape juice, so I only have some if I'm offered it on New
Year's eve, and not if there's something better around.

I think a lot depends on the quality of the champagne. I recall being
delighted with 1966 Florens Louis when it was 20 years old. So was the
owner of my favorite French restaurant when I gave him a bottle of it as
a gift.

Maybe I shouldn't believe the stuff they say on winery tours --- after
all, they want you to buy more on the way out.

Since I live in NY, I am sure there are wineries out west near the
Finger Lakes that I could tour, but I never have.
