I just learned my son probably has ankylosing spondylitis, a
nasty inflammatory/auto-immune disease. At best it is a PITA
and in cases can be fatal, with the full range of suckitude
in between. He flunked the genetic test (has the gene), and
the fact that he developed symptoms so young is a baaaaad
prognosticator.
WhereTF is Rose Marie when you need her? (Actually, I am glad
I work for Duke. He'll get good care. Alsoplustoo, this is all
according to my ex-witch, so I'll wait till he's seen at Duke's
rheumatology clinic before going into full batshit crazy panic
mode.)

All in all, I don't think I was born far enough in the future to suit
me. For all some people have nattered on about the coming singularity,
it doesn't seem like biotechnology is advancing all that fast.
I'd say it's premature to reach a conclusion.
There are a lot of unspecified auto-immune
irregularities. Thus far you've only reached a
determination of non-exclusivity.
Proceed with caution when receiving new
from your ex-witch.

That is indeed teh suck. If Wikipedia is at all truthful, it's not a
nice condition to have. Here's hoping for a better diagnosis when he
gets his second opinion.

I am somewhat hopeful the advances in genetics, stem cells,
etc. will beable to help my son. I know from my own field
of work that biotechnology *is* advancing all that fast,
it is just that enemy is Hitler cubed times Mao to the Pol
Pot.

Though you didnut mention how old that is, remember it also means
treatments will come along before the condition progresses very much.

Even after, fail to go into etc. Remember that this is the hot new
class of diseases to study because it includes so many conditions like
my very common damn arthritis as well as so-far incurable horrors like
Lupus. Also, now that I think about it, my wife's neurologist thinks
her particular version of peripheral neuropathy is an autoimmune thing
as well.

I am hopeful it can be managed. My biggest concern is if it affects
his heart.
