The Self Styled Prophet - Charles Taze Russell

Sme more background history, concerning C.T. Russell, is
interesting. Today many believe he was a mild, truth-loving man.
But facts proves he was a self-styled con-man. Someone who made
religion to a million dollar enterprize. The following dates are
a matter of public record.

In 1881 through 1897 The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society
progressed under the joint administration of husband and wife.
In 1897 Mrs. Russell left her husband. In 1903 Mrs. Russell sued
for separation. The decree was secured in 1906, following
sensational testimony and the courts scored Pastor Russell. The
Pastor settled in 1906 with a payment of $6,036 to Mrs. Russell.
This litigation also revealed that C.T. Russell controlled all
financial power of the society, and was not accountable to
anyone.

In Jan.1913 Mr. Russell sued the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper
for libel, asking $100,000 in damages, concerning his sale of
“Miracle Wheat”. He lost, and the Daily Eagle won.In June of
1912 a Pastor J.J. Ross of the James Street Baptist Church, of
Hamilton, Ontario published a pamphlet titled “Some facts about
the Self-Styled “Pastor” Charles T. Russell”. Pastor Ross
scathingly denounced Russell’s whole system as anti-rational,
anti-scientific, anti-biblical, anti-Christian and a deplorable
perversion of the true gospel of God’s dear Son. Pastor Ross
exposed Russell as a pseudo-scholar and philosopher who never
attended the higher schools of learning. He knows comparatively
nothing of philosophy, systematic or historical theology, and is
totally ignorant of the dead languages Hebrew, Greek, and
Aramaic). C.T. Russell promptly sued Ross for “defamatory libel”

On March 17, 1913 upon cross-examination of Mr. Russell for five
hours, it was revealed that he attended public school for only
seven years, and left school at the age of 14. In further cross-
examination it was revealed that Mr. Russell knew nothing of the
Greek or Hebrew languages. He was never ordained as a “Pastor”
by a bishop, clergymen, presbytery, council, or any body of men
living in his day. After all was said and done, Mr. Russell lost
his suit against Pastor J.J. Ross.

It is also interesting to note that shortly after this trial,
Pastor J.J. Ross wrote a second pamphlet titled “Some Facts and
More Facts about the Self-Styled Pastor Charles T. Russell”. At
this time, Mr. Russell knowing about the second pamphlet by
Pastor Ross did absolutely nothing about it, and had no public
comment concerning it allegations. It is also interesting to
note, that in all the litigations C.T. Russell had, his lawyer
was none other then Judge J.F. Rutherford, heir to the throne of
Russell’s watchtower society.

The above information is just a terse outline of early events,
concerning Mr. C.T. Russell and the law.

These events are documented in the newspapers of that day, The
Hawaiian Star (Honolulu, Dec.19 1912)

The Daily Standard Union (Canada). Pastor Russell was deported
from Canada about Nov.1916.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, continually exposed C.T. Russell and
the “con-games” he was involved in,

The early “scams” and trails of C.T. Russell are still available
today. (Now microfilmed in Ne

** I think he's pointing out what type of men started the WTBTS. They were
scam artists and users. Once the money started to roll in they never held
real jobs again. Since they claim they have a direct line to Jehovah they
would not have given such bad and deadly advice to people. Wouldn't god
know better if he created people and their diseases and parasites? Please
Boydette, stop and THINK before you start typing. :-) The WTS, like other
businesses cannot escape it's past no matter how sordid or how hard they
try.

Luckily a good deal of the references cited are available
in the on-line files of the Brooklyn Eagle. These can
be accessed and searched, for free, at the Brooklyn Public
Library web-site.

The Witnesses, the Adventists, and the Latter Day Saints
all grew out of movements in which there were scandels
and frauds. But, then again, a detailed history of the
popes of the Roman Catholic Church would embarrass most
faithful Catholics today. Despite the problems in their
pasts, some religious movements continue to live and
grow, while others shrink and die.

Exposing the problematical pasts of various religious
movements generally does not make them shrink and die.

If it did -- really did -- then, Jerald and Sandra Tanner
would have destroyed the LDS Church 30 years ago. They
did not, despite their best efforts ---- not because
all that they said against the Mormons were lies (much
of it was true), but because members of the LDS Church
continued to find meaningful experiences and connections
inside the organization, no matter what its past was.

Somebody may enjoy reading the old Brooklyn Eagle articles,
but I doubt they will do anybody today any good -- whether
they are 10% true or 100% true. They probably do not matter
much any more.

Boydette, you may wish to do a little bit of reading before you make
quick responses. Consumption most certainly IS/was a diagnosis. It is
the old name for tuberculosis. Back in that day there was no effective
treatment and it was a large cause of child mortality. This may be
"old news" but it does shed light on who the founders of the
Watchtower were as people. It isn't B.S. it is the lies and half
truths peddled as Gods direction by corrupt and evil men. As far as
"how can she print this stuff with no proof" She actually included the
reference so YOU can look it up yourself. That is the point. It isn't
hearsay it is documentable.

Odd, since he denied being a prophet many times. Russell never gave any
prophecies, and never claimed any ability to foretell the future, thus there
were no prophecies to fail. "Our own views are not prophecy, but
interpretations of the holy prophets of old." (Watch Tower, October 1890,
page 8) "We are not prophesying; we are merely giving our surmises, the
Scriptural basis for which is already in the hands of our readers in the six
volumes of SCRIPTURE STUDIES." (Watch Tower, January 1, 1908, page 5). "I am
not a prophet." (What Pastor Russell Said, Q272:1, 1910)

I guess you wouldn't want to believe in that Jesus character, either. After
all his ministry was scandal ridden. They used to take money out of the
poorbox, and pour lavish oils and myrrh and stuff on his feet. And then one
if his crew sold him for thirty pieces of silver. Naah, don't believe in
that character. He was obviously all about money.

Well, I was told that the Great and Abominable Church
fouled up all those biblical texts. And, if the BoM
doesn't clarify the picture, it's probably not worth
worrying about.

Nephi
"Woman, your fine ointment, brand new and expensive"
"could have been saved for the poor."
"Why has it been wasted?"
"We could have made maybe, 300 silver pieces or more."
"People who are hungry, people who are starving,"
"matter more than your feet and hair."

I have spent a while at the Brooklyn Public Library site, but do not find
the Brookly Eagle files for the time period that Brother Russell was
attacked by the Eagle. The files end with the year 1902. I have searched for
some time now and have found nothing about Brother Russell. The site has a
statement that they are still in the planning stage of adding more files.
http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/Archive/skins/BE/faq.htm#more

I, myself, would like to see that actual articles printed by the Eagle about
Russell.

A wealth of these old newspaper articles can be viewed via
the NewspaperArchive.com web-site, Ancestry.com, and the
Godfrey.org web-site, but none of these are free. The Ancestry
old newspaper articles can be accessed from most Mormon church
libraries that have internet connections for genealogical
research -- for free, however.

BEWARE! there are people on this newsgroup who are only here to slander and
lie about Jehovah's Witnesses. They do not offer any alternative
organization... as a matter of fact, some are admitted atheists (Matthew
12:30; John 8:44-47) I have all of their posts filtered out because they can
not hold an intelligent conversation and often resort to lies. They claim to
be quoting from Watch Tower literature but these are *NOT* exact quotes,
they change words and quote things out of context. I don't respond to
spurious fabrications. Hence if you see that I am not answering someone, it
is because their previous attempts at deception have earned them a place in
the 'block sender' file. They exist here only to destroy (1 Corinthians
10:6-11) They speak not as Christians (Ephesians 4:31-32) I do not need to
name them for by their fruits you will recognize them (Matthew 7:16-20) One
has to wonder, why was a newsgroup set up to attack this *one* organization?
