I am very concerned about what happened. First of all, in literature
distributed by the State of Hawaii, no where does it state that the
Polynesian Cultural Center is actually a place where Mormons try to
brainwash the innocent into becoming Mormons. It should be made clear that
this is a Mormon Function. And in your state why is one religion promoted
over another? Do you have a Baptist Cultural Center? A Catholic Cultural
Center? A Buddhist Cultural Center? Why is one group allowed to deceive
tourists and not all the rest?
The State of Hawaii should be ashamed. Does anyone there know what is going
on? Don't you have separation of church and state?
I can promise you one thing, I will never go to the Polynesian Cult Center
and I will inform anyone who cares to know about another scam in Hawaii.
People of Hawaii should be ashamed.

To answer your "concerns," the PCC is not, nor has it ever been, a state
government project. It sits on land owned by the LDS church, adjacent to
the Laie Temple, and is staffed mostly by students from Brigham Young
University-Hawaii Campus.
The various cultures portrayed there are factual portrayals by people who
actually come from that part of the world. If you had gotten over your
snooty hatred of Mormons, you would have been able to enjoy yourself as
these youngsters tried to educate you about their way of life, which is
very, very different from yours.
Also, the State of Hawaii promotes all tourist attractions equally,
regardless of the sponsor. And, yes, by the way, there IS a Buddhist temple
there, a very large one, on the same side of the Island of Oahu as the PCC
(it's called the Windward side of the island), but closer to Kaneohe.
As for the Baptists, I suppose they have something somewhere in the South.
If you'd get your nose out of joint for a few seconds at a time, you might,
just possibly, learn something new! If you REALLY want to learn something,
you might think about researching the response of the Maori Elders to the
first Mormon Missionaries to visit them...you'd be surprised, I'm sure!

Oh, come off it, jerk. I *lived* in Hawaii for four years, and
there's no *conspiracy* to cover up the Mormon connection to the
Polynesian Cultural Center. Locals are well aware of it, the Mormon
Church is forthcoming about it, and that doesn't stop anyone, malihini
(newcomer/tourist) or local, from going there for a visit.
They do a good job of presenting the culture of various Polynesian
folk in an entertaining and educational manner. I've even heard
tourists commenting on how surprised they were to learn of the
differences between Polynesian cultures. For example, firewalking is
most closely connected to the Fijians, firedancing is more of a
Tahitian thing, facial tattoos are more common to the Maoris than to
other Polynesians, and that Hawaiian hula is *completely* different
from what mainland US types generally think.
It is a good drive from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki (expect an hour
or slightly more), but well worth it, IMO, for anyone who visits the
Hawaiian Isles. Only the USS Arizona Memorial is a more worthy
tourist attraction in Hawaii, I think.
The PCC is a nice tourist attraction, and the fact that it is run by a
church doesn't have a thing to do with it.
And no, I'm not Mormon.
Peace, love and hope to all.

You're full of shit. I've been there a dozen times, and that is not what
happens. There is no "little room," and they do not show Mormon movies there.

It's owned and operated by their church, specificly so polysnesian students of
BYU Hawaii can have a place to work while they attend school.

And I can promise you something else. You never went there. Because that is
not what happens. Besides, if you don't want to go, then don't pay to get in!

Could be you only see what you want to see. I lived in Hawaii for
five years and know firsthand there is no effort to conceal the
connection between the LDS Church and the PCC. . .

Could be because there is no such "brainwash" effort conducted. Also,
since the PCC *is* a private venture and no way associated with the state
of Hawaii, there is no reason to include church status with the center.

Was that the *only* thing you managed to remember from the PCC? My
sympathies and I would hope you manage a more balanced view in future.

First point - No religion is promoted over another. Any group may set up
any other center they wish. Public funds have not been used.
Second point - no one is deceived - brainwashed - or any such stuff and
nonsense as you allege. You had a problem with the video? Hope you
manage to get over yourself.
>

Yep - and (again -- sigh --) since there are no public funds used in the
PCC your comment concerning separation of church and state is without
merit.

Don't try to mislead the Brethren, satanachist!
My, it's refreshing to run across such such enlightened people here on
Usenet! Goodness knows, Mormons are just like the Amish in a lot of
ways:
* Some of our men wear beards (though not as many in the present as
in the past)
* A lot of us have ridden on a horse once or twice in our lives
* Some of our women claim that they don't like having their pictures
taken
* It's common for families to have a largish number of children
* Both groups regard the Bible as a holy book.
* Both groups consider themselves to be Christians.
* Neither Amish nor Mormon congregations have paid ministers.
* Both churchs were founded by a person whose first name began with the
letter J
Well, that's just for starters.
However, a quick perusal of Internet resources will show that there
are also a few inconsequential differences. The Amish do not have a
very strong presence on the 'net, though I found a few interesting
pages by checking Yahoo. (I found the one at
http://www.religioustolerance.org/amish.htm to be quite informative.)
A comparison of any of these to the offical Mormon (or, more correctly,
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) web page at
http://www.lds.org will serve to illustrate a few of these differences.

**** snip snip snip rant and replies
1) I've been at the PCC many many moons ago --
2) The real problem is that there is no mention of church sponsorship or
church involvement in any of the "tour litereature " - and there are
people who if they knew it was LDS related, would never go..
3) The show(s) were generally quite good - and probably worth the price
4) becasue it was many moons ago ( 1970's ) videos were not in vouge, but
i did not get any LDS pitch or "selling "
5) If I *had* been given a snow job , I would have been furious -- why ?
-after paying good money and having limited time to visit the center ( via
tour bus ), I would not stand still for *any* religious pitch.
6) So rather than attack the guy who complained, suggest someone check
out what really happened.
7) Take the complaint to the appropriate new group or the LDS
And No, I'm not LDS
And Yes, I and several others have been given the 20 hours of the LDS
snow job by a church elder ( and manager ) during work hours.. without a
chance to walk out, and not daring to complain because it would have been
"career limiting " -- so it those things DO happen -- and * could* have
happened at the PCC

I can see why you posted this without using your real name.
Others have given you the facts regarding ownership of the PCC, but here is
something else you might consider. Several years ago the Premier of China (I
forget the name) visited the US for the first time. Guess where he went to
first on his journey -- yep, the PCC. In fact he was so impressed that he
asked for assistance to set up a similar cultural center in China, to
preserve the culture of his nation.
The Premier, without the "assistance" of the antiMormons to poison his mind,
did not see this as a big propaganda tool for the church, but as a way to
preserve a cultural heritage which might otherwise be lost. He wanted the
same thing in China, which the church assisted in creating.
The antis have really poisoned your mind from enjoying a truly uplifting
experience.
I think

Sorry, I didn't mean the Amish! I get all you cults mixed up sometimes!
So, um... which "cult" _did_ you mean? Since there probably aren't many
Amish around to defend themselves, I'll simply point out that maybe,
just maybe, most thinking people wouldn't classify them as a "cult,"
even though they aren't exactly mainstream Christians. We Mormons don't
care for that classification either, but we've heard it so often that
sometimes it doesn't seem worth the trouble to protest.

I think most people here would agree that this personal, loving person is
the Christ we all worship.
It is funny how easily we forget how God might feel if he saw all of this
hatred being tossed around in this newsgroup. Hatred is eveil reguardless
of who started it. If you are a true Christian, you will stop it, and not
be provoked easily to anger.
