Merrill Lynch in deals to delay mortgage losses: report

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Merrill Lynch has engaged in deals with
hedge funds to delay when it had to record losses on risky mortgage-
backed securities, and the Securities and Exchange Commission has
started a probe looking at how Wall Street is valuing mortgage
securities, according to a published report on Friday.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people close to the
situation, that in one deal, a hedge fund bought $1 billion in
commercial paper issued by a Merrill-related entity containing
mortgages, the newspaper said.

In exchange, the hedge fund had the right to sell back the
commercial paper to Merrill (MER:Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc

minimum return, it added, citing an anonymous source.

In recent weeks, Merrill has been scrambling to line up hedge funds
to take as much as $5 billion in mortgage-related securities, people
close to the situation said, the report added.

Shares of Merrill Lynch dropped 4.6% t in pre-open trade.

Merrill has recently been the posterboy for the implosion in the
credit markets related to reckless mortgage lending and the
securitization and trading of products based on them. See chronology

On Tuesday, Merrill Lynch & Co Inc said embattled CEO and 21-year
company veteran Stan O'Neal was leaving the company less than a week
after taking personal responsibility for the largest quarterly loss in
the 93-year old Wall Street firm's history.

Merrill described the departure as a retirement, but analysts and
investors, as well as several press reports over several days, have
said that the loss, and the subsequent revelation of unauthorized
contact with Wachovia Corp about a possible deal had aggravated the
board and sealed his fate.
