July 1964 THE CLIFF HANGER By PAUL TWITCHELL

"The Cliff Hanger" article by Paul Twitchell was published
by "The Psychic Observer" monthly magazine in July 1964.

"The Square Peg" article by Paul Twitchell on 16th July
1963, in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (SP-I) is related
to this 1964 version retitled "The Cliff Hanger".

Both are a response to Jack Jarvis' "Paul Twitchell, Man
of Parts" article, originally in the SP-I 9th July 1963,
and again in the August 1964 edition of "The Psychic
Observer."

(Bit odd how it was published after the cliff hanger, a
printing error I suspect.)

I don;t think there is an OCR text version of this article in full,
so here is one now, with links to original to check.

July 1964 "The Psychic Observer" Magazine

THE CLIFF HANGER

By PAUL TWITCHELL

Since the syndicated interview which appeared
several weeks ago in newspapers throughout the
country I have been besieged with mail asking,
"what in heaven's name is a Cliff Hanger?"

It is easy to give on answer to anyone personally
but trying reply to the bulk of letters which has
reached my door is like taking on a task of removing
Mt. Rainier by the shovelfuls. To simplify the term
Cliff Hanger it to explain that it is an expression
I coined to explain my attitude regarding this age
of mass culture is a lot of abracabrda.

The nonce (sic) is synonymous of a man hanging on the
edge of a cliff safe from the crowd; more outside
than the outsider, happier than the angry young men,
more beat than the beatnik, and at the opposite pole
from the eXistentialist who claims man has no hope
in life.

The Cliff Hanger seeks solitude because his nature
demands it. He is in a sense like the story told
about the aging Daniel Boone who awoke one fine
spring morning in old Kentucky to find a neighbor
had settled some thirty-five miles close to him,
and thinking the land was over crowded moved to
Missouri where he was able to live in peace with
nothing but Indians and bears within a hundred miles
area.

The ways of this homegenous society has those with
the attitude of the Cliff Hanger with no alternative
but to reject it and follow the trail blazed by
those who might have been called Cliff Hangers in
their times prior to our generation. E. G. Byron,
Tom Paine, Rimbaud, Lawrence of Arabia, Henry Miller
and a few hundred others who have earned the
various tags of non-conformists, individualists
rebels and lonely-odd balls.

He is known as the most independent homo ecco of
modern times. His rejection of society is not a
rebellion but a break with its economic system,
with its ideology, with what I call the "big lie",
and the despised values of politics and morals. He
is as much at home in this mass culture as a
hermaohrodite at a Daughters of American Revolution
Conveution.

This advocate of the illogic is not interested in
public bangles, nor is he willing to give himself
the airs of a hero by proclaiming a great love to
raise money for hospitals, or worthy causes which
involves the enthusiam (sic) of a middle-class.
Neither is there anything else in this mass age
great enough to make him climb a wall, especially
in religion.

The Cliff Hanger may be the vanguard of a new
religion called "Eckankar," a Hindu word meaning
union with God. This unorthodox philosophy took
hold with the European intellectuals and in
college circles following the publicat1on of my
works abroad.

I adopted this is avangardist attitude a few years
ago and went out of orbit in rebellion against the
middle class soap opera which consists of Billy
(the kid) Graham, the Ivy league, the Bossa Nova,
apple pie, the Kennedy administration, politicians,
and newspaper columnists, to name a few including
the United Nations. I have grown to be more like
the Yeti which lives in the mountain fastness of
the Himalayas wanting only my solitude in some
remote place.

For this reason I seek solace in meditation and
out-of-the-body experiences, or what might be
called bi-location. These experiences were common
in lhe lives of the old savants. My saints are
Kabir, 16th century Hindu mystical poet who taught
Shabda Marg, the path of Shabda Yoga. Other saints
I follow are the ancient Sufi avatars Jalal al-din
Rumi, Hafi (sic), Shamus-i-Tabiz, Rama, the Indian
savior and Kirpal Singh, of India.

I study the Sar Bachan, the sacred scripture of
Shabda Yoga, as my bible. This is a part of my
search for the realms where dwells the cosmic man.
A few Christians, Sufi, Hindu, Arabic and Chinese
mystics have reached these realms and left their
mark upon human history.

Eckankar, which I formed out of my own experience,
is the term used for the philosophy I have developed
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. (sic)

I am a reactionist in both spiritual and political
sense for I want to return to the basic philosophy
of free men and live this freedom of spirit
continuedly. But those in the mass culture do not
like this for they consider any man of imagination
and free spirit, the Cliff Hanger, dangcrous to
their existence. In a literal sense anyone
desiring to live freely drives himself out of
society and must live in voluntary alienation.

The struggle of the free spirit against the traps
of this mass culture as exemplified in an anecdote
on Gandhi's experience with an insurance salesman.
When the salesman was trying to sell Gandhi a life
insurance policy which he said would take care of
Gandhi's family in case of the old Indian saint's
death, he got this reply. "If the members of my
family are not sufficiently trained to take care
of themselves after I pass on, it's because I've
failed to prepare them for this material world."

This is the attitude I've adopted in the face of
the security minded society which keeps telling
its members to be safe is the first principle in
life; to be safe for old age, be safe for health,
be safe for the afterlife and be safe just to be
safe!

I have grown to dislike insurance, credit cards,
career girls, ranch type houses, togetherness and
the flapdoodles of our supermarket culture which
places so much emphasis on the so-called aids to
better living, and the safety of the physical
being of man. I am more interested in the search
for that Far Country which Rudyard Kipling wrote
in his short story of the same title.

My restlessness has caused me to skip read several
thousand books a year, make my own venacular for
communication, travel incessantly and make writing
my vocation.

In a sense I am not willing to lay down my life
for friends and kin as some persons of high ideals
are inclined to do. My thoughts on the human race
are not often printable. Shaw's famed play, The
Hangover House, has Captain Shotover speaking the
thoughts which might have been parallel to my own.
The Captain says to his daughter who is marrying
for money. "You talk about marrying for security.
When I was your age I was seeking danger, hunger
and life, not security, for I didn't know what it
was."

The intergration problem bemuses the Cliff Hanger
for it is his opinion that the negro is wacky as
a bug for wanting to get into the white man's
effeminate society. If he had the gumption the
negro go it alone and form his own society and
refuse the while man any right to intergrate into
it.

Accordingly, I see this civilization heading down
to destruction and it is the Cliff Hanger who will
be the greatest to suffer unless he can get out of
it quickly. In a sense he is like old Thoreau who
wasn't in the least interested in changing the
way of time, but wants to be left alone to enjoy
his own company in solitude.

My works are pointed to these points I have high-
lighted here although they may appear on the
surface like the writings of a man careless of
law and landlords with an attitude of gay mockery.

This is my answer to those who are asking "what is
heaven's name is a Cliff Hanger?"

an interesting bit here:

"........... My saints are

In July 1963 and again in July 1964 Twitchell is saying:

My saints are Kabir, 16th century Sant Mat teacher/guru,
Shabda Marg, the path of Shabda Yoga.

Other saints I follow are the ancient Sufi avatars
Jalal al-din Rumi, Hafiz, Shamus-i-Tabiz.

Rama, the Indian savior - pre-hindu
Aryan from north europe of Theosophy & Eduoard Schure

and Kirpal Singh, of Ruhani Satsang
student of Sawan Singh RSSB.

I study the Sar Bachan, by Soamji founder of Radhasoami.
the sacred scripture of Shabda Yoga, as my bible.

So that's basically
1) SANT MAT (L&S)
2) RADHA SOAMI (L&S)
3) KIRPAL SINGH (L&S)
4) SUFI SAINTS (L&S)
5) PATH OF THE MASTERS (L&S)
6) Eckankar, which I formed out of my own experience,
is the term used for the philosophy I have developed.
7) Shabda Yoga, called the Yoga of Sound Current.
8) ECKANKAR THE BILOCATION PHILOSOPHY

1964-01 Orion Magazine - Eckankar The Bilocation Philosophy by Paul Twitchell

Eckankar, the philosophy of out of the body experience, is that understanding
which I have gained from bilocation excursions similar to those in the lives
of the saints of all faiths.

I began my study of bilocation under the tutelage of Satguru Sudar Singh, in
Allahbad [sic], India. Later I switched to Sri Kirpal Singh, of old Delhi.
Both were teaching the Shabda Yoga, that which is called the Yoga of Sound
Current. I had to learn to leave my body at will and return, without effort.

Eckankar is the study of the bilocation experience. Man needs to learn to
leave his body at will and dwell in his spirit body, on other planes. He must
someday leave this fleshy temple, so he should learn that by going in and out
of his body that he can give it up to death without suffering.

The self or soul has three places it can dwell. It can be inside the skull,
three feet behind the head, or stuck in the body. (that's SCIENTOLOGY writ)

Comments: Twitchell is saying that his #1 Saint is KABIR of Sant Mat.
No mention of Guru Nanak or the Sikhs specifically.
That Kirpal Singh is a saint to him.
The RS RSSB Sar Bachan is his 'bible'
The Sufi saints are teaching the same thing
That it's about oobe bilocation and the sound current

No "Sudar Singh" has been verified anywhere
Sudar is a female name for 'Sudarshan'
More likely a "fictional" comfit character & "literary peg"

possibles however include Either/Or Comfit personality from
1) Bhagat Singh Thind teaching Sant Mat in the USA from the 30s until 1967
2) Writings of Sufi Inayat Khan in USA, France, UK until the 1920s
3) RS Babuji Maharaj 5th Sat Guru Soami Bagh Agra & Allahabad until 1935
4) Sri Yukteswar Giri, Yogananda & Kriya Yoga in USA 1945-50?
5) Swami Premananda 1950-55

No evidence or possibility of Twitchell being in India in the times
suggested by his stories or being in Allahabad. Twitchell never left
the USA until into his 30s in the Navy.

No Rebazar Tarzs nor other Vairagi ECK Masters are mentioned.
No ECK master term used until late 1968
No Mahanta term used until early 1969
Kirpal Singh highly rated until late 1966 then redacted out of the history
along with Premananda and Hubbard during 1967 TTF & 1968 IMSIAF books.

Add in info and texts James Mitose, Hubbard's Dianetics & Scientology,
Theosophy, Freemasonary, Crowley, Mormons, Spiritualists, New Thought,
Rosicrutian, Kriya yoga and more.

In 1964-11 Psychic Observer Mag - The God-Eaters article Twitchell
introduces for the first time *Rebazar Tarzu* and *Yaubl Socabi* and of
Kirpal Singh taking him on the journey in The Tigers Fang back in 1957.

In December 1964 Twitchell is advertising Eckankar in San Diego:

"World literature is filled with the records of those who
were able to leave their body and return at will. Among them
are: Apollonius, Jamal din Rumi, Kabir, Tulsa Das, St. Anthony
of Padua, Zoraster, Shelley, Arnold Bennett, Napoleon, Jack
London and many others.

Paul Twitchell brings new techniques to those interested in
bilocation. Taking the old and putting together new ideas he
has codified a system called Eckankar, for those concerned with
out-of-the-body experiences, by making use of their natural
faculties as the modis operandi. He has developed a complete
new philosophy around this."

He has studied under:
Sudar Singh, Allahabad, India;
Swami Premananda, Self-Realization Order, Washington, D.C.;
and Kirpal Singh, Delhi, India.

Scientology believes that Man is not his body, his mind or his brain. He, a spiritual force, energizes the physical body. Indeed, through the discovery of exteriorization, Scientology proved, for the first time, that Man is a spiritual being.

Twitchell uses for plagiarisning copying into his books.

In great detail about Shams Tabrez and Maulana Rum (Rumi)

HAFIZ - Hafiz was his nom-de-plume. His real name was Mohammed, and
Shams-uddin was his title. His forefathers belonged to a place called
Sarkcin in Iran, near the city Nihivand. His grand-father shifted
from there to Shiraz. (as in grapes) His father's name was Maulin<i Kam<iluddin.

KABIR SAHEB - Kabir Saheb manifested himself in this world on the day
of the full moon in the month of Jeth in 1455 Vikram (1398 A. D.).
His father's name was Nur AH alias Nirli and that of his mother Nima.

NANAK SAHEB - Nanak Saheb was born during the reign of Sultan Bahlol
Lodi early in the morning of the day of the full moon in Katik in 1526
Vikram (1469 A.D.).

5) Kirpal Singh was a Radhasoami Beas lineage Shabda Yoga teacher who knew
Julian Johnson, and was taught by Sawan Singh who died in 1949. Kirpal started
Ruhani Satsang in 1951 in Delhi and first came to the USA in 1955. Twitchell
was initiated by Kirpal Singh in Oct 1955 in Washington DC.

6) Julian Johnson's 'Ekankar' means the One Oneness & a name for "God" as
did Twitchell's Eckankar. In TFC and LTG and ARTCILES.

Page 84, LTG II, by Paul Twitchell
"In the world of the saints, God is expressed by
many words such as Swami, Ekankar, Akal, etc"
Keyword: Ekankar Please see 1966 notes below

Paul Twitchell says that Eckankar is a Hindu word
... in square peg, cliffhanger articles etc Square peg quote reads:

"a new religion entitled Eckankar... a Hindu word meaning Union with God."

The use of the word "coined" refers to Twitchell inventing the word and meaning for Cliff-Hanger.

For clarity about the "oneness" quotes:

Ekankar means the 'one oneness', the body of oneness. [PotM - Radhasoami]
http://www.mirrorh.com/potmnots.html

"ECKANKAR means the one oneness, the body of oneness. [TFC - Eckankar]
http://www.mirrorh.com/tfctfc.html

1966 audio Exact Quote - 2011-11-09 by D.M. a.r.e. post
"You'll find that the word of itself is a mispronounced or corrupted spelling that came out of the word E-K-A-N-K-A-R (Paul verbally spells the word out), which means the One Supreme All-inclusiveness of God, or the Co-Worker of God."
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/alt.religion.eckankar/aCZ819f1HIc/fLckMMmDzDUJ

So Paul Twitchell took an existing Punjabi word *EKANKAR* used in Ruhani
Satsang by Kirpal Singh and RS Beas and Sant Mat and hinduism and sikhs,
and gave it the same meaning plus "co-worker with god" and then progressively
also changed that meaning of the new word "ECKANKAR" and used it in different
ways post-1968.

But the meaning was the same from 1963 and in The Far Country book published
in 1971 .... verbatim via Julian Johnson, Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh et al of RS.

7) There is no story titled Far Country by Kipling. Twitchell was referring
to Jack London's "In A Far Country". So much for the photographic memory http://www.jacklondons.net/far_country.html
http://books.google.com.au/books/about/In_a_far_country.html?id=EzuwAAAAIAAJ
http://www.jacklondons.net/writings/Essays/Jack_londons_naturalism1.html

8) Bhagat Singh Thind started teaching in the USA as a sikh "priest" circa
1922/26 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhagat_Singh_Thind

Bhagat Singh Thind wrote his first book Divine Wisdom in 1925.
He referenced the Sikh and Vedas scriptures, Guru Nanak, Kabir and Buddha.
And like Twitchell referred to Whitman, Emerson, and Thoreau.

At some point he became more focused on Sant Mat than a sikh. He gave Initiations
into "Sant Mat" and was considered by his followers as a master. He didn't
die until 1967 after Twitchell had started Eckankar. Thind's son David believes he was initiated by his father and was a student/follower for a period. (email)

OK SO THIS ALL A BIT BORING I SUPPOSE

From Twitchell's earliest writings to his books and discourses in the 1970s
his teachings mirror those of Sant Mat, Radhasoami, Advaita Vedanta, and the Sikhs.
[PTHA 2011] Summary of Sant Mat, Sufi & Bhakti Saints History
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M0yAR0UPhPQWYzRlpPZFZjRlU/view?usp=sharing

He uses and plagiarizes Julian Johnson, Soamiji Maharaj, Radha Soami Mat
Prakash 1897; The Sar Bachan, and Kirpal Singh. The Sufis, Theosophy, Besant,
Kriya Yoga, Freemasons, New Thought, Hubbard & Scientology, and anything about
Out of Body Experiences, astral travel, soul travel, Bilocation & Exteriorization.

Swami Premananda (Kriya Yoga DC) was a 33rd Degree, very high up Freemason
in the USA - Twitchell was with him circa 1950-1955 - So was Col James
Churchward a high degree Freemason (and his brother), another who Twitchell
plagiarised / lifted ideas from about Rama and Atlantis MU etc.
Ideas and Stuff came from everywhere -- where Sudar Singh, Allahabad, India,
sounds much more like Bhagat Singh Thind during the 20s to 40s in the US;

and then Kirpal Singh, Delhi, India on tour of the USA 1955 & 1963/64 and
all of Radhasoami and Sant Mat and Sufi like teachings that came with it.

and then Twitchell is working for Hubbard as his Scientology Press Officer,
Trainer and Counselor at the Hubbard Academy in DC circa 1956-59; and they
are teaching Exteriorization (Bilocation) and the soul being separate from the
Body and eternal. That an OOBE is proof of being more than just a living body.

So what we have here is a compilation of various ideas, texts, teachers,
gurus, and philosophies taken from Sant Mat, Radhasoami, Shabda Yoga, Sufis,
Advaita Vedanta, Theosophy, Freemasonary, Scientology, Kriya Yoga, and New
Thought plus a few other streams that relate to OOBEs, Meditation and
Bilocation practices.

Unknown characters appear in 1964 Sudar Singh, Rebazar Tarzu, Yaubl Sacabi.

From Fall 1966 Twitchell REDACTS past teachers and paths from his writings, including Premananda, Kriya Yoga, Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh, Hubbard, Scientology,
Radhasoami Hindu gurus and teachings, ... but he leaves in Rama, Rumi, Shams,
Socrates, authors, famous figures, savants etc.

In 1966 there were NO "Vairagi ECK Masters" either.

The earlier redactions included such people as Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh,
Swami Premananda, L Ron Hubbard, Meher Baba, and Jesus Christ.

References that were redacted included Kriya Yoga, Paramahansa Yogananda's
SRF aka Yogoda Satsanga Society in India, Radhasoami Beas, Ruhani
Satsang, Freemasonary, Theosophy, Blavatsky, Annie Besant, Scientology,
Padre Pio, Christianity, Guru Nanak, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Hinduism et cetera
across the board and over time.

None of Sudar Singh, Rebazar Tarzu, Yaubl Sacabi, Fubbi Quantz, are known as
Vairagi Eck Master's until mid to late 1968. Twitchell is not known as the "living Eck master" until the Oct. 1968 WW seminar.

The extra term Mahanta is first used in the Jan 1969 IW Letters mailout to members.

Twitchell's main books and discourses and talks are published between 1969 and 1972 when all the other "eck masters" are introduced to the "reader".

In 1970 (according to Marge Klemp 8th and ex-wife of HK) Eckankar switches to
a Non-Profit Religious organisation in order to protect itself from law suits
over members ending up in mental institutions (as happened to Harold Klemp
himself that year) and other health/legal and financial advantages for
Eckankar, such as Tax Free Donations from members and their deceased estates.

In July 1963 Paul Twitchell, born in 1909, is claiming he's only 40 yrs. By 1971
he is telling reporters he looks in his late 30s and no one knows how old he really is.

In 1972-74 there were 10,000 to 11,000 Eckankar members / Initiates on the books. (in DG newspaper report)

Fascinating stuff, no? And so it goes.
