Hi all. I came out of ARE retirement to post this note on another one
of Twitchells sources. When I come across these I will pass them on.
Back in October of this year, in a posting on Twitchell
plagiarims found in The ECK-Vidya, I also noted that Twitchell once
said one of his favorite writers was Joel Goldsmith, and that
Goldsmith might therefore be a gold vein of undiscovered plagiarisms.
I was in a bookstore last weekend and came across one of Goldsmiths
books titled INVISIBLE SUPPLY. So I bought it, and read through it to
see whether Goldsmith might indeed be one of Twitchells sources.
Goldsmith lived from 1892-1964, and wrote over thirty books according
the book cover. I figured since this was but one book out of thirty,
and a small one at that, the chances of getting many hits was small.
But I came across quite a few hits - around 50 different passages
ranging from a single sentence up to a page in length. If Twitchell
owned a lot of the 30 books Goldsmith wrote, there could be a huge
number of plagiarisms from Goldsmith. Probably the title of Twitchells
book and discourses titled THE ILLUMINATED WAY are take offs of a
Goldsmith book titled THE INFINITE WAY.
It would take many many tiresome hours to track down and cross
foot the passages I found in Goldsmith to Twitchells writings, and I
do not have the motivation to do it. It was enough to go through
Goldsmiths book and highlight passages. But anyone well acquainted
with Twitchells writings should recognize the familiar passages when
he comes across them. Many of the passages I know are close to
passages found in DIALOGS WITH THE MASTER. This is interesting to me
for two reasons. First, as far as I know there have not been many
accusations that DIALOGS WITH THE MASTER contains a lot of plagiarism.
This assumption may be false. Second, DIALOGS was supposedly dictated
to Twitchell by Kirpal Singh, then Twitchell changed Singh to be
Rebazar Tarzs. It appears, however, that even the supposed dications
of Singh contain plagiarisms. Not that this would really surprise
anybody who knows Twitchells writing habits.
A final interesting point. Most of the authors Twitchell did
major plagiarizing from had a writing style quite different than his -
for example, Julian Johnson, Neville Goddard, and L. Ron Hubbard. But
Goldsmith sounds to my ear very much like Twitchell. His style and
cadence are almost identical at times. But then again, writers tend to
imitate to some extent the style of other writers that they admire.
Twitchell may have done this.
Anyway, here is a small sampling of passages from Goldsmiths book
used by Twitchell with small variations -
<Most religious teachings tell us that the Spirit of the Lord is
everywhere. If that were true, everybody would be free, healthy,
wealthy, independent, joyous, and harmonious. But that is not the
conditiion of the world, so that teaching cannot be true.> -
Goldsmith, page 28
<The Infinite Way student cannot go through the day merely
reading some Truth in the morning or anticipating hearing some Truth
in the afternoon. There has to be a conscious activity of Truth going
on all the time.> - Goldsmith, 39
<By the very act of seeking and searching for God, we are
denying that the Kingdom of God with within...the more we use physical
or mental efforts to find God, the more we are denying that his
Kingdom is within us.> - Goldsmith, 48
<Praying, meditating, reading spiritual writings, attending
services or classes or lectures...> will not get us to God. -
Goldsmith, page 49
<Since God is omnipresent, can God be away from where you are?
Since God fills all space and time, is there some place or time away
from where God can be?> - Goldsmith, page 51
