Part 3 of 3
Meanings and sources for the words Ik Onkar, Ek Onkar, Ikoaʼnkār, Ek Oankaar, etc.
Ek Oankaar ੴ: The typical Sikh definition is “There is only One God”
The opening line of the Japji by Guru Nanak goes: Gurmukhi script transliteration:
Ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh
And in Punjabi
Ek Onkar Satnam Karta Purush Nirbhau Virvair Akal Murat, Ajuni Saibhang Gurprasad(i)"
English Translation
One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace
And/Or
There is One and only One God who is transcendent as well as immanent. True and Eternal Name. Creator and Person. Without Fear and without Enmity.
Timeless Form, Unborn, Self-existent. Realized by Divine Grace.
Ek | One
There is but one God, the Sole Supreme Being, the Ultimate Reality. Bhai Gurdas writes, "By writing 1 (one) in the begining, it has been shown that EkOnakar, God, who subsumes all forms in Him (and prevades all forms) is only One (and not two or three or any number)."
Oankaar
The word 'O-ankaar' denotes that God manifests Himself ceaselessly throughout His Creation in diverse forms, features and colours, and in this way becomes knowable to man. But, in spite of manifesting Himself diversing, God remains One; He remains Immanent in His Creation, while at the same time remaining Transcendent. This God is at once One and Many implying Unity in Diversity. Kapur Singh suggests Oan = Transcedent, -kar = Immanent. The Mandukopanishad defines the word as: "That which was, is, will be, is all Onkar. And that which triple transcends is Onkar too."
Together, these two words, or Gurmukhi symbols, blend into the one idea:
One Universal Creator God – or - There is only One God.
The other common use of the term Ek Oankaar etc., is as a NAME FOR GOD

SIKHISM The Unique LOGO Ek Oh Beant (Ek Oankaar Ek Ongkar Ik Onkar) 2011
“The ੴ, it is pronounced by many Sikh theologians as ‘Ek Oankaar’ or ‘Ek Aumkaar’ because they consider the open ‘Oora’ is the abbreviation of ‘Oankaar’ used in Gurbani.
Many Sikh scholars relate ‘Oankaar’ to ‘Aum’ according to Vedic and Vedantic philosophy. This paper presents the findings of our continuous research into the
meanings of the logo, ੴ, coined by Guru Nanak. Here it has been fully documented that ੴstands for ‘Ek Oh Beant’ (One and Only, Oh, Infinite).”

SGGS Sikh Name for God Lord Ek Onkar Sat Guru Sat Naam
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M0yAR0UPhPTU5WLXV6MnZhNzg/view?usp=sharing
From the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS)
The God of the Sikhs is variously referred to as:
Waheguru (''The fulfills the role of the eleventh and final Wonderful Lord'')
Ek Onkar (''True God” “True Guru of Sikhism'') Onkar,
Satguru (True Guru) Satnaam (True Name) Akal-Purkh,
Hari, Raam, and Pritam
Page 181 World Religions RL. Almanac Librarum.org
www.librarum.org/book/17174/181
Therefore, consistently throughout Sikhism the terminology Ik Onkar, Ek Onkar, Ikoaʼnkār, Ek Oankaar, etc. always basically means “There is only One God”.
This same phraseology, no matter what language, is also used as another Name for God.
Sat Naam is another name for God commonly used by Sikhs. For the entirely different word of
“Ekankar” – “one lord” is the most used meaning today.
There is no debate about this. Guru Arjan said exactly the same things 400 years ago, as Guru Nanak said a century before him. Nothing has changed here.
However, recall what Marman claims in his book:
“The resemblance to Eckankar is no accident. Paul Twitchell derived the name for his modern teaching from this phrase. The connection goes deeper, as Guru Arjan was teaching what he knew of Eckankar, in his time.”
The lettering maybe similar, and how many other words in the world appear similar due to the “letters” or the “sounds” and yet are totally different in meaning, and also their Etymology is equally distinct.
The meaning and it's usage of the words Ik Onkar and Eckankar are too distinct and alien to each other and the teachings they spring from. On the other hand, there are some clear similarities in the word usage of the word “Ekankar” via Radhasoami and “Eckankar” via Paul Twitchell.

Kirpal Singh of Ruhani Satsang has consistently said: “Naam or Word BOOK ONE”
VARIOUS NAMES OF GOD
The sages and the saints have described God in innumerable terms, as for instance Swami or Soami, meaning Lord God; Nirala (peerless or without a compeer); Anami (the nameless); Har Rai, Agam or Alakh (the incomprehensible or the ineffable); Ram Rai or Sat Purush (the eternal Truth or unchangeable permanence); Ek Ankar (the one life breath or live principle); Puran Chetan Purush (complete consciousness); Akal (timeless or the deathless one).
All these are just attributive or qualitative names - names signifying one or another of God's attributes.
Such names simply describe any one aspect or facet of God as appealed foremost to someone's individual liking. Thousands of such names appear in holy scriptures: Ram (all- pervading), Rahim (gracious or merciful), Girdhari (encompassing), Murari, Allah, Khuda, Wah-i-Guru, and the like. The Jews call Him Yahweh or Jehovah. All these names are worthy of our adoration for each one of them tries to single out some aspect of the Beloved. I revere each one of Thy names, O God!” (2 Basant M1)

Guru Nanak's: the JAP JI - translation and comments by Sant Kirpal Singh
There is One Reality, the Unmanifest-Manifested; Ever-Existent, He is Naam (Conscious Spirit), The Creator; pervading all;
Without fear; without enmity;
The Timeless; the Unborn and the Self-existent; Complete within itself.
Through the favour of His true Servant, the Guru, He may be realised.
He was when there was nothing. He was before all ages began; He existeth now, O Nanak,
And shall exist forevermore.
The text as given constitutes the Mul-Mantra or the basic principles as taught by Guru Nanak. God is described as the One Supreme Being (Nirankar), the Unmanifest- Manifested (Ekankar), the Eternal Verity, the Conscious Spirit pervading all forms that emanate from Him-He upholding the whole creation. He is not apart from His creation, but is immanent in every form.

The work for the reader to do here is to compare Twitchell's uses of the word Eckankar, to Kirpal Singh's use of the word Ekankar. Then take that further back to Singh's sources and have a good look at Shiv Dayal Singh, Salig Ram, Sawan Singh, Jamail Singh, and all the other numerous Radhasoami gurus from the past to the present.
Something that will assist here is to remember Dr. Julian Johnson's writings in several books and The Path of Masters 1939, in particular.
Such as:
4. NAMES OF THE SUPREME BEING pg 242
In the literature of the saints, God is expressed by many words, such as Soami, Ekankar, Nirankar, Radha Soami, Akal, Nirala, Anami, Agam, Alakh, Sat Punish, Prabhu, Prabhswami, Hari Rai, Akshar, Parameshwar, Akshar Purush, etc. All of these words have been coined in an effort to convey to human intelligence some idea of what the saints think of God, or Lord God, the highest power.
Ekankar means the 'one oneness', the body of oneness. Nirankar means 'without body or form'. Soami or Swami means the 'all-pervading lord'. Radha Soami — radha, 'soul', and soami,
'lord' — 'the lord of the soul'. The word radha, in Hindi, when reversed becomes dhara. This means 'current' or 'stream of ener- gy', the attribute of the soul. When the dhara is reversed, when it turns upwards away from the creation, it becomes radha, the soul.
The whole universe is considered as one, the true Ekankar. There is perfect oneness in the universe, which is also coexistent with God — infinite, unlimited. Hence, the Soami is Nirankar, that is, formless. As such, he is without personality, hence without name.
Pg 10 -1. The author is referring here to Maharaj Sawan Singh, who passed on in 1948. He was succeeded by Maharaj Jagat Singh, and then Maharaj Charan Singh. The present living Master is Maharaj Gurinder Singh. (of RRSB)
We may refer to such great Masters of the past as Shams-i- Tabriz and Maulana Rum of Persia; and in more recent times,
Kabir Sahib, Tulsidas, Guru Nanak and his nine successors; and still more recently, Soami Ji, Baba Jaimal Singh, and Sawan Singh Maharaj of Beas, who is the living Master. Many others might be mentioned, scattered all through history.
Pg 26 The great Renaissance of learning began with Roger Bacon, almost three hundred years before Francis Bacon. The torch of genius was then taken up by Leonardo da Vinci. It was thrown
into the sky by Copernicus and Galileo. Their bold stand, in spite of ecclesiastical suppression, gave hope to the timid spirit of the age. The research of Gilbert and Vesalius called out the slumbering genius of pre-Reformation days, and then came Francis Bacon to call together the training school of Europe. It was a time of general awakening from the dark night of medieval ignorance. Savonarola and Luther, John Knox and the Wesleys, came into the general stir not so much to inculcate science but to awaken the stupefied spirit. At about the same time, Kabir Sahib and Guru Nanak were doing the same thing in India. They were trying to quicken the religious and spiritual instincts. In America the pilgrims were at that time too busy fighting the Indians and building themselves homes to bother much about new concepts in religion and science That came later. It was an era when the whole world was just beginning to sit up and take notice. Nevertheless, it was the birth period of modem scientific thought.
Pg 89 Guru Nanak said: "Conquer the mind and you conquer the world."
Pg 135 The religion of the Sikhs in India is distinctive. It has never gained world reputation. Although now numbering several million adherents,
it is still practically limited to the Punjab in India, though Sikhs are scattered all over the world. Yet this religion is most
universal in its fundamental principles, and is nearer to Sant Mat than all other teachings.
This religion was founded by Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 a.d., and died in 1539. He was contemporaneous with Kabir Sahib. After Guru Nanak came his nine successors.
Pg 136 As intimated above, the content of the Sikh religion is so nearly identical with that of Sant Mat that there is but little reason to attempt a separate analysis. Guru Nanak and his spiritual succes- sors were saints, Satgurus in the true sense of the word, and conse- quently their teachings coincide with those of all other saints. There can never be any difference between the teachings in any age of
the world.
Pg 201 Guru Nanak says: "He who earns an honest living and gives away something out of it in charity, knows the Way."
Pg 328 There is a very meaningful sentence written by Guru Nanak, which says:
“Body, mind and wealth; give all to the Guru; obey his commands, and reap the reward.”
Pg 455 Adi Granth Original (adi) Scripture [granth) ; sacred scripture of the Sikhs;
SGGS; (Sri Guru Granth Sahib); contains the teachings of Guru Nanak, his successors and other saints. Compiled chiefly by Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru in the line of Guru Nanak, about the year 1604.
Further consider Kirpal Singh's use of the phrase “the master power above” to Twitchell's definition for the Mahanta.
Kirpal Singh repeatedly stated that he of himself did nothing. Kirpal Singh went further by repeatedly saying that “God is the only Guru/Master”. Compare that with what Marman claims Twitchell wrote in a letter dated July 10th 1957 - “God is the only master”.
Go further and compare Kirpal Singh's use of the phrase “become a conscious co-worker of the divine plan” to Twitchell's slightly different term “become a Co-Worker with God”. What is the difference? Nothing.

That there are direct similarities between Radhasoami teachings and the Sikhs is obvious and overt. They continually quote the Sikh texts and Gurus, especially Guru Nanak.
If there is any relationship between the Sikhs and Paul Twitchell it is merely an accidental one, spawned by the long term influences of Sikhism on the RS gurus in the PUNJAB, the home of Sikhism in India. These similarities in RSSB and Ruhani Satsang and the motivation provided by the writings and lectures and the influences of one Kirpal Singh over Paul Twitchell are far more likely and self-evident to be what is reflected in Eckankar writings when they appear. He did directly plagiarise them after all.
Still the obvious persists such as ECK never means ONE. Eckankar is not a name for God.
There are not enough real similarities and connections with Ik Onkar to believe Twitchell actually derived the name for his modern teaching from this Sikh phrase. There is no substance to such an idea, in our opinion.
Twitchell himself says where he got it from and it wasn't Guru Arjan or Nanak nor anything to do with the 400 year old writings of the Sikhs. Try closer to home and the RSSB Kentuckian, Dr Julian Johnson for starters and Twitchell being unable to spell properly or remember what he had read elsewhere.

The Three Principles of ECKANKAR
In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad Vol I, pg 131, (Fubbi Quantz via) Paul Twitchell says:
He must recognize only that God is and that he himself, as Soul, also is. Soul is never anything else but this.
(1) It is always in eternity.
(2) It is always in the present NOW.
(3) It is always in the heavenly state of God.
These are the three principles of ECKANKAR which It must come to understand and know well. Out of these principles springs the doctrine and philosophy of ECK. There is nothing more to say and there is nothing less to say.
By the realization of these three principles the chela becomes a transparency for the divine impulse. He comes into a greater awareness of the divine plan in this world, and his part in it. He now rests in the arms of the Mahanta,
the Inner ECK Master, and relies upon him to give him this divine guidance.
The Three Pillars of Sikhism
Guru Nanak formalised three basic guidelines for Sikhs:
1. Naam Japna (focus of God),
2. Kirat Karni (honest living) and
3. Vand Chakna (sharing with others).
With these 3 values, the Guru knew that the person would achieve spiritual elevation and material happiness in this world. "Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows -O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them!" (SGGS p 8)
More detail
1. Naam Japna: The Gurus led the Sikhs directly to practise Simran and Naam Japna – meditation on God through reciting, chanting, singing and constant remembrance followed by deep study & comprehension of God’s Name and virtues (Gurbani the Compendium of ETERNAL truth).
The inner voice of the Sikh thus stays immersed in praises and appreciation of the Creator and the ONE ETERNAL GOD Waheguru and his WILL. The Sikh is to intuitively practice and stay focussed on the True Path through every breath throughout his life. Various ways were gifted to the Sikhs to remember and tread on this path of righteousness. To begin with and as a social habit, recite the Nitnem banis daily in remembrance of the grace and Kirpa (blessing) of the Almighty. 'Early to bed & early to rise...' is the FIRST STEP towards the Gate to Sikhism.
2. Kirat Karni: He expected the Sikhs to live as honourable householders and practise Kirat Karni – To honestly earn by ones physical and mental effort while accepting both pains & pleasures as GOD's gifts and blessings. One is to stay truthful at all times and, fear none but the Eternal Super Soul. Live a life founded on decency immersed in Dharam - life controlled by spiritual, moral & social values.
3. Vand Chakna: The Sikhs were asked to share their wealth within the community by practising Vand Chakna – “Share and Consume together”. The community or Sadh Sangat is an important part of Sikhism. One must be part of a community that is pursing flawless objective values set out by the Sikh Gurus and every Sikh has to contribute in whatever way possible to the common community pool. This spirit of Sharing and Giving is an important message from Guru Nanak.

Sant Kirpal Singh Ruhani Satsang (Divine Science of the Soul) mentions Guru Arjan many times.
Ruhani Satsang [the words mean literally "spiritual gathering"-no denominational or sectarian connotations of any kind], at which all persons, even though professing different faiths and religious beliefs, could be imparted the principles of Spirituality and encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines, in order to gain salvation and peace here and in the Beyond." - Kirpal Singh
There are many texts available through the website for free. See:
http://www.ruhanisatsangusa.org/
Quoting from 1954 Kirpal Singh Messages:
“Guru Arjuna of the Sikhs also spoke in the same terms. “ I have the highest abode, and have innumerable worlds to live in. My rule reigns throughout the universe. All creation is subject to me. People sing my praises from home to home, and people own their loving devotion to me in all the world over. My Father has appeared in me and Father and the son both are working as one. O Nanak! Father was pleased so much so that Father and the son have taken the same colour.”
One night both Dr. Julian Johnson and I were sitting at the feet of Master Sawan Singh Ji. He was in a gracious mood. He said, “Whenever we come, we bring our working staff with us. When we have done our work allotted to us successfully at one tour, we are sent to the other fields.” How beautifully He puts His coming to the world, though in very sweet terms full of humility, giving an inkling that He came with an authority from god. Kabir also said in the same way. “We are the knowers of the mystery of the God to be given to the
world at large.”
Master Sawan Singh was not a man of the world, and was not bound to the bondage of the body.”

This is never mentioned in any main book by Eckankar. I'm not sure if it is in the discourses, it could be and I can't remember it. That's a lot of reading to check, btw, so I won't.
I think if Rebazar Tarzs was really Sant Kabir, it would make for an interesting story. Either way, it's still only a story from Paul Twitchell. His word isn't reliable or trustworthy when comes to 'historical things” like that.

Someone else talks along similar lines to Doug Marman and the meaning of the word Eckankar comes from Ik Oankaar. It is the OM Guru website.
They say that the name Eckankar is **probably** an anglicized version of the first three syllables of the Sikh holy book – the Adi Granth Sahib.
Separating out the syllables of Eckankar, "Ek" or "Eck" means the number one and "Om- Kar" means to make (or chant) the sound of OM, the pranava or Hindu mantra that represents the sound of the creation of the universe. In some interpretations, Omkar is considered to be the deity Brahm, the ruler of a higher plane of being.
The Sanskrit letter OM is nasalized because it contains a chandra-bindu or "moondrop" over it which sometimes leads it to be phonetically rendered as "ong" or "ang". Thus, if the "M" sound in OM is muted by emphasizing the nasalized "O" sound, the Omkar turns into Angkar or Ongkar, and Ek Omkar becomes Ek Ongkar or Ek Angkar, and finally Eckankar.
Other popular English spellings of Ek Omkar are "Ik Omkar","Ik Ong Kar", "Ik Oankar", and "Ikonkar" or "Ik Onkar". All represent the mulamantra or root mantra of Guru Nanak, one of the holiest mantras for devout Sikhs, and a faith statement about the oneness of God.
The name Eckankar can be translated in a straight forward manner as "The sound of OM is Truth or oneness". It can also be translated more poetically as "One universal creator God". To show this phrase in context, the English translation from the Gurmukhi language of the entire first stanza of the Adi Granth Sahib reads:
One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By [the] Guru's Grace.
The late Radha Soami guru Kirpal Singh wrote in his book Nam Or Word that the term Ek Ankar was one of the names of God, and that the English translation of this term was "the one life breath".
Paul uses similar terminology when he writes:
We never "become one with God" as the metaphysicians or religionists claim. What actually happens is that we become one with Spirit, the essence of God. This is what is so often poetically named the Breath of God.

Saying it, DOESNT MAKE IT SO ….. I think they have this wrong, and haven't looked at the whole story properly. Given Eckankar in parts is almost identical with Sant Mat, and Radhasoami it's natural those parts would also show up some similarities back to the Sikh religion and writings.
That is a very different thing tan saying that Guru Arjan was speaking about ECKANKAR, and that Rebazar Tarzs had initiated Gurur Nanak. Twitchell couldn't even write his name clearly, instead saying “Nanka Guru.” That's how little there is directly connected the Sikhs and Eckankar … and there is no relation between the WORDS Ik Oankar and Eckankar ….. Six times removed maybe
yes. For a start Eckankar is not some overall supreme teaching out of which all others have come. It's simply not true. It's only some thing Paul Twitchell combined himself from many pre-existing teachings and hundreds of books he had read, copied parts and then later compiled these into his own ideas, philosophy and beliefs. Most of it he simply made up as required.
So Guru Arjan couldn't be writing about something that isn't even genuine and authentic and real. If it isn't even what it says it is, there's no way for Arjan to be talking about it 400 years ago. All similarities are because the Sikhs came first and Paul Twitchell has integrated similar ideas in Eckankar via Radhasoami teachings and other Indian paths Accidental similarities entirely.

Falsehood #4: This new translation is an attempt at restoring Sukhmani to its original meaning
Assuming that is, that Doug Marman is qualified to know the ORIGINAL INTENTIONS and knows better than Guru Arjan, the other Sikhs gurus, the modern writings about Sikhism, and also knows more than even Twitchell himself. And is competent in producing a BETTER more accurate original text and a “true translation” of the Sukhmani.
Now, that being said, there is nothing wrong or out of place in someone deciding to pick up a good translation copy of the "Sukhmani", and reading it for oneself. World history and experience is replete with such superb spiritual & literary works of poetry.
For example, MARMAN suggests that the word "Sukhmani" means "bringer of peace to the heart."
Well anything that can do that has got to be good for a person. Other suggested meanings for the "Sukhmani Shahib" (the real term) are:
"Dive deep into the lovely heart-rending meanings of Sukhmni Sahib Ji where interpretation of each Gurbani line revolves around the selfless actions of Gurus.."
Sukhmani: Peace of Mind, the Nectar of the Name of God. The word Sukhmani literally means Peace in your mind.
To find out more about the Sukhmani or Sikhism, maybe go to a Sikh temple and ask an expert? Spend some quality time reading some books by expert teachers of the Sikh Path began by Guru Nanak in 1500s.

To fill your head with “mythical stories and unfounded beliefs” about Paul Twitchell and Eckankar, plus made-up connections back to Guru Nanak and the Sikh path then best go read some 'MARMANKAR.'
Either way, make up your own mind. At the end of the day, everyone only wants to be heard.
It doesn't matter if everyone doesn't agree with your own beliefs all the time. Everyone is searching for meaning in their Life. It's always a good time to trust in your own instincts and inner nudges.
Peace!
