2014-12 'Ik Onkar' 'Ek Onkar' 'Ekankar' 'Eckankar' and 'Marmankar'

From a Caltech commencement address given in 1974 - THE CHERRY PICKING FALLACY

FIRST PRINCIPLES: Cargo Cult Science by Richard Feynman

"It's a kind of scientific integrity, a principle of scientific thought that corresponds to a kind
of utter honesty--a kind of leaning over backwards."

"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself--and you are the easiest person to
fool. So you have to be very careful about that. After you've not fooled yourself, it's easy
not to fool other scientists."

"One example of the principle is this: If you've made up your mind to test a theory, or you
want to explain some idea, you should always decide to publish it whichever way it
comes out. If we only publish results of a certain kind, we can make the argument look
good. We must publish BOTH kinds of results."

From: http://neurotheory.columbia.edu/~ken/cargo_cult.html

This article presents the other kind of results. The ones which were discarded, never noticed, or
ignored in the first place.

If one thinks about the above Principles really carefully and then applies these to the commentary
that has come from the top end of Eckankar over the decades, you may also come to the recognize
that 99% of that has been cherry-picked PR lines, favourable propaganda to make the argument
look good.

This essay addresses the statements made by Doug Marman on the first page of his book:
Sukhmani: The Secret of Inner Peace
New Translation and Commentary by Doug Marman

"Sukhmani" means "bringer of peace to the heart." Guru Arjan wrote this book over 400
years ago, after someone struggling with life begged him to share how he found
peacefulness. Arjan's answer is one of the deepest and most insightful testaments ever
recorded.

However, this book tells another story, as well: That spiritual teachings are often lost
through dogmatic thinking and the practice of rituals - even when the author warned of
this danger.

Sukhmani should be of particular interest to modern day followers of Eckankar, Sant Mat,
and Radhasoami. The connection with Eckankar is especially strong. The Sukhmani opens
with this line:

Ek Onkar Sat Guru Prasad.

This means: "The One Reality - realized through the grace of the True Guru."

Some
translations spell it this way:
Ekankar Sat Guru Prasad.

The resemblance to Eckankar is no accident. Paul Twitchell derived the name for his
modern teaching from this phrase. The connection goes deeper, as Guru Arjan was teaching
what he knew of Eckankar, in his time.

This new translation is an attempt at restoring Sukhmani to its original meaning, to return a
sacred stone, once lost, to its original source. Reading Guru Arjan's words shows us how
timeless the living path of Spirit truly is.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The focus in this article is on the results of reference research and our existing knowledge about the following four 'false assertions, claims and beliefs' being presented:

1) Some translations spell it this way: Ekankar Sat Guru Prasad.

2) The resemblance to Eckankar is no accident. Paul Twitchell derived the name for his modern teaching from this phrase.

3) Guru Arjan was teaching what he knew of Eckankar.

4) This new translation is an attempt at restoring Sukhmani to its original meaning.

Based on the evidence and allowing for a reasonable doubt, it is our firm opinion that those statements do not rise to the level of even being reasonably held 'justified true beliefs'. What it suggests as how things are or were doesn't add up. It's distorted and much of is disinformation. There are ill formed connections and it lacks supporting evidence to sustain the assertions which are at times illogical.

Contrary to assertions on the first page of this "new translation" it is that is likely it is "dogmatic thinking and the practice of rituals" behind arriving at these wrong conclusions. Well people believe all kinds of things and it's usually because they haven't seriously looked at all the evidence. Some might see the author as an authority on things Eckankar and Paul Twitchell. He is far from perfect. Anyone can believe he is, if that suits your world view and you find ideas plausible. Each to thine own self be true. It all works out in the end I believe.

These wrong beliefs seems to be creating a non-existent history in reverse here. This dogmatic thinking and ritualistic obsession seems able to conclude anything if it might further legitimatise Eckankar and Paul Twitchell.

This book, Sukhmani: The Secret of Inner Peace, seems to be used here as an apologetics for Eckankar. Is Guru Arjan really hinting at Twitchell's Eckankar teachings or not. Is it a legitimate attempt at an accurate translation by a knowledgeable expert in the field? I don't think so. The
number of errors in The Whole Truth I have found tells me they weren't that being presented by competent as a historian and biographer.

The author has shown in dialogue he often cannot grasp what someone is saying to him face to face without hearing it incorrectly versus what was actually said and/or misinterpreting the meanings of those words. When replying it can get twisted beyond all recognition. The pattern is to state what the other person had said, which they didn't. He changes their words into what he thought they wrote and meant.

When the other person comes back to correct the errors and wrong claims, Marman has a distinct pattern of still being unable to hear or read precisely the corrections from the other person yet again. Often telling them he knows what they said and knows what they meant better than they do. Yes other people have done the same thing to him, it happens to us all sometimes, the dear fellow also does it himself and in spades.

Is the author actually qualified and with the expertise required to not only translate an original text from languages one cannot understand, they have no training or expertise in it, but can also RECONFIGURE THAT BACK TO IT'S ORIGNAL MEANING? Back to what was Arjan's true intention and meaning really was over 400 years ago now. This is just ridiculous. If anything it is a personal interpretation.

Besides poor communication issues there's a three decade public track record of making false statements and untrue claims about others, getting things very worng at times. These extends to Twitchell, his Plagiarisms, Klemp, Kirpal Singh, Ruhani Satsang and Radhasoami beliefs and practices, Prof. David Lane, plus a conga line of posters on a.r.e. and all over the internet.

Now, if one cannot accurately comprehend what someone is saying to him in English in the here and now, it is my prognostication that they possesses few relevant skills or capability in doing that for something written by Guru Arjan 400 years ago, in another language, from a different society and within a totally different world of which they know very little about.

Marman can believe whatever he wants. Anyone can believe what he says is true if they wish. It doesn't matter and it shouldn't. The only thing of true value, the only thing that can or ever will make a difference, is what you the reader chooses to believe. No one is more qualified to do this or more responsible than yourself. It's your responsibly to inform yourself of the facts and the truth of matters. No one else.

There's no need to accept what is written in this text either. By all means check every single word of it for yourself. Do the same for the other claims. Do the research and educate yourself. No one can do that better than you can. Though do be aware the wooden nickels offered up as real coin along the way. Maintaining a balanced scepticism is a healthy way to be and think. I too make mistakes.
So will you and that's OK.

I submit to the reader the following references to facts and evidence, the history, Sikh quotes and
writings, plus a more realistic alternative interpretation of what's similar and what isn't. Let the reader decide what is right or wrong, true or false, accurate or a distorted false belief . What follows mostly speaks for itself.

Falsehood # 1: Some translations spell it this way: Ekankar Sat Guru Prasad.

ABSOLUTELY WRONG

Only FIVE (5) Hits ... ALL about MARMAN's own book, by Marman.

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance, and conscientious stupidity."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Of course the resemblance to Eckankar and the other spelling Ekankar, is no accident here, because Marman is intentionally conflating it all by himself. By so doing he is manipulating the reader to IMAGINE THERE IS A CONNECTION ..... when in fact there is none.

Except inside Marman's own head. That is where it begins, and that is where this bullshit needs to end.

Even if there is another case of someone who does use the word spelling of "Ekankar" in that line, is besides the point and will prove nothing. The exception proves the rule. Marman is the exception here, and the rule is NO ONE spells it this way: Ekankar Sat Guru Prasad.

No one except for Marman that is. If this is Marman's standard for "truth and accuracy, as well as for spiritual wisdom" and it shows up on the very first page of his book, and it is flat out wrong, totally false disinformation about a critical point then what would one expect to come later and how reliable and credible is that going to be?

More of the same: Really lousy research, mythical thinking, unsustainable assertions, and GROSS MISREPRESENTATIONS? Or totally believable and true?

Falsehood #2: The resemblance to Eckankar is no accident. Paul Twitchell derived the name for his modern teaching from this phrase.

ABSOLUTELY WRONG

The meanings and sources for the word ECKANKAR by Paul Twitchell

In an early article entitled "The Cliff Hanger" published in Psychic Observer in 1964, Twitchell
explained the basis behind his new group:

"Eckankar, which I formed out of my own experience, is the terms used for the philosophy I have developed for the Cliff Hanger. It is based on Shabd-Yoga, a way out form of yoga.
The word is the Hindu locution for the cosmic sound current which is known in our vernacular as the cosmic river of God."

The Cliff-Hanger is a one-man cult. I am the original Cliff-Hanger and its sole disciple. This zany character is called the vanguard of a new religion, entitled "Eckankar," a Hindu word meaning union with God.
This unorthodox philosophy received a wide welcome among the European intellectuals and college circles following the publishing of my works in European Magazines. The Cliff-Hanger seeks solace in meditation and bi- location experiences common in the lives of the Old Christian Savants."

"Eckankar, The Bilocation Philosophy," published by Orion Magazine of Lakemont, Georgia, in January 1964, seems to be Paul Twitchell's first public article entirely devoted to his new movement. In the "Bilocation Philosophy," Twitchell writes:

"Eckankar, the philosophy of out of body experience, is that understanding which I have gained from bi-location excursions similar to those in the lives of saints of all faiths. Eckankar is the study of
bi-location experience."
[Paul Twitchell, "Eckankar: The Bilocation Philosophy," Orion Magazine (January 1964).]

In the same article, Twitchell explains the difference between Eckankar and the orthodox Eastern philosophies:

"The orthodox Eastern Philosophies teach that man must become one with God, but I cannot hold to this concept. The individual self of man becomes a coworker of God, not a part of the unity of Him, in the sense of being one with the divine source, anyways, for we are dwelling in the body of God..." [Ibid.]

Page 84, Letters To Gail vol. II, 1963 & 1974 by Paul Twitchell says:

"In the world of the saints, God is expressed by many words such as Swami, Ekankar, ...."

Julian Johnson in The Path of the Masters 1939 says:

"Ekankar means the one oneness, the body of oneness."

Rebazar Tarzs in The Far Country 1971 says:

"ECKANKAR means the one oneness, the body of oneness."
The Spiritual Notebook by Paul Twitchell, The Illuminated Way Press, 1971, p. 96 says:

We never "become one with God" as the metaphysicians or religionists claim. What actually happens is that we become one with Spirit, the essence of God. This is what is so often poetically named the Breath of God.

In a.r.e. post 2011-11-09, Doug Marman says:

Paul Twitchell's actual words in the 1966 talk: Names, Places and Sounds in the Discourses.

"You'll find that the word of itself is a mispronounced or corrupted spelling
that came out of the word E-k-a-n-k-a-r (Paul verbally spells the word out),
which means the One Supreme All-inclusiveness of God, or the Co-Worker of God."
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!msg/alt.religion.eckankar/aCZ819f1HIc/fLckMMmDzDUJ%5B1-25%5D

The Eckankar Dictionary by Paul Twitchell pg 44 says:

ECKANKAR (ehk'-ahn-kahr)
The Path of Total Awareness; the way of all things; means "co-worker with God"; a teaching which gives knowledge of both the light and the sound which contains the total sum of all teaching emanating from God;
the very foundation of all systems of science, and the key to success in unfolding all spiritual powers;
the Ancient Science of Soul Travel;
projection of the inner consciousness which travels through the lower states until it ascends into the ecstatic states where the subject feels he possesses
an awareness of the religious experience of being, which is achieved through a series of spiritual exercises known only to the followers of this science.

The Eckankar Dictionary by Paul Twitchell pg 41 says:

ECK (ehk)
The Audible Life Current; all that is life;
the eternal truth and eternal paradox within all; encompasses all the teachings of religions and philosophies; stream of life force;
the Science of Total Awareness that grows out of the experiences of Soul Travel;
the realization of God Consciousness;
the thread that binds together all beings in all planes, all universes, throughout all time and beyond all time into eternity;
life force; self consciousness; Holy Spirit; the source of all;
the creator of all things; the great forming force which works in a creative way; the constructive forming force; is everywhere;
the essence of the SUGMAD, the Holy Spirit and the science of God-Realization. See DIVINE POWER and DIVINE SPIRIT.

The Eckankar Dictionary by Paul Twitchell pg 45 says:

EK Modern form of "Ecstasies" or "ek-marg,"
used to describe both the result and the techniques of "exteriorization."
Known to the pagan Greeks, and to the Romans (as "superstitio"), the practice consisted in reaching, through concentration, a mystic state in which the subject believed his spirit to have left his body.
Buddhism fostered similar techniques through meditation.
In the modern Western world, the practice was revived in mid-twentieth century by the American savant, Paul Twitchell, who set forth a number of methods for "leaving the body," with the object of achieving total awareness of the divine ground of Divine Being.

In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad Vol I, pp 6-7, Paul Twitchell says:

"ECKANKAR is the basic foundation for all religions, philosophy and scientific works in our world today. It is closer to being in its original form, as the science of Soul Travel, than any of the other paths to God. However, it is neither religion,
philosophy or metaphysics, for it is the ECK-Marg, meaning the path of ECKANKAR."

"Basically, the main principle or vital part of ECKANKAR remains as
out-of-the-consciousness projection, which is far beyond the astral or any other lower plane movements."

In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad Vol I, pp 9, (Fubbi Quantz via) Paul Twitchell says:

"ECK is the totality of all awareness. [...[
Hence the SUGMAD (God) speaks to us only through the primal sound. IT has no other way of contact other than through the ECK, or creative energy. Out of the Divine Voice all other sounds flow. [...]
The all-creative ECK is the Voice of the SUGMAD (God), out of which all other sounds arise. [...]
IT is the Divine Word, for IT includes everything that IT has said or done, and what IT is."

In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad Vol I, pp 130-131, (Fubbi Quantz via) Paul Twitchell says:

"Consciousness is the ECK, but not God ITSELF. [...] Soul is never anything else but this. It is always in eternity.
It is always in the present NOW. It is always in the heavenly state of God. These are the three principles of ECKANKAR which It must come to understand and know well. Out of these principles springs the doctrine and philosophy of ECK."

Part 3 of 3

Meanings and sources for the words Ik Onkar, Ek Onkar, Ikoaʼnkār, Ek Oankaar, etc.
Ek Oankaar ੴ: The typical Sikh definition is “There is only One God”
The opening line of the Japji by Guru Nanak goes: Gurmukhi script transliteration:
Ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh
And in Punjabi
Ek Onkar Satnam Karta Purush Nirbhau Virvair Akal Murat, Ajuni Saibhang Gurprasad(i)"
English Translation
One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace
And/Or
There is One and only One God who is transcendent as well as immanent. True and Eternal Name. Creator and Person. Without Fear and without Enmity.
Timeless Form, Unborn, Self-existent. Realized by Divine Grace.

Ek | One
There is but one God, the Sole Supreme Being, the Ultimate Reality. Bhai Gurdas writes, "By writing 1 (one) in the begining, it has been shown that EkOnakar, God, who subsumes all forms in Him (and prevades all forms) is only One (and not two or three or any number)."

Oankaar
The word 'O-ankaar' denotes that God manifests Himself ceaselessly throughout His Creation in diverse forms, features and colours, and in this way becomes knowable to man. But, in spite of manifesting Himself diversing, God remains One; He remains Immanent in His Creation, while at the same time remaining Transcendent. This God is at once One and Many implying Unity in Diversity. Kapur Singh suggests Oan = Transcedent, -kar = Immanent. The Mandukopanishad defines the word as: "That which was, is, will be, is all Onkar. And that which triple transcends is Onkar too."

Together, these two words, or Gurmukhi symbols, blend into the one idea:

One Universal Creator God – or - There is only One God.

The other common use of the term Ek Oankaar etc., is as a NAME FOR GOD

SIKHISM The Unique LOGO Ek Oh Beant (Ek Oankaar Ek Ongkar Ik Onkar) 2011
“The ੴ, it is pronounced by many Sikh theologians as ‘Ek Oankaar’ or ‘Ek Aumkaar’ because they consider the open ‘Oora’ is the abbreviation of ‘Oankaar’ used in Gurbani.
Many Sikh scholars relate ‘Oankaar’ to ‘Aum’ according to Vedic and Vedantic philosophy. This paper presents the findings of our continuous research into the
meanings of the logo, ੴ, coined by Guru Nanak. Here it has been fully documented that ੴstands for ‘Ek Oh Beant’ (One and Only, Oh, Infinite).”

SGGS Sikh Name for God Lord Ek Onkar Sat Guru Sat Naam https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M0yAR0UPhPTU5WLXV6MnZhNzg/view?usp=sharing

From the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS)

The God of the Sikhs is variously referred to as:

Waheguru (''The fulfills the role of the eleventh and final Wonderful Lord'')
Ek Onkar (''True God” “True Guru of Sikhism'') Onkar,
Satguru (True Guru) Satnaam (True Name) Akal-Purkh,
Hari, Raam, and Pritam

Page 181 World Religions RL. Almanac Librarum.org www.librarum.org/book/17174/181

Therefore, consistently throughout Sikhism the terminology Ik Onkar, Ek Onkar, Ikoaʼnkār, Ek Oankaar, etc. always basically means “There is only One God”.

This same phraseology, no matter what language, is also used as another Name for God.
Sat Naam is another name for God commonly used by Sikhs. For the entirely different word of
“Ekankar” – “one lord” is the most used meaning today.

There is no debate about this. Guru Arjan said exactly the same things 400 years ago, as Guru Nanak said a century before him. Nothing has changed here.

However, recall what Marman claims in his book:

“The resemblance to Eckankar is no accident. Paul Twitchell derived the name for his modern teaching from this phrase. The connection goes deeper, as Guru Arjan was teaching what he knew of Eckankar, in his time.”
The lettering maybe similar, and how many other words in the world appear similar due to the “letters” or the “sounds” and yet are totally different in meaning, and also their Etymology is equally distinct.

The meaning and it's usage of the words Ik Onkar and Eckankar are too distinct and alien to each other and the teachings they spring from. On the other hand, there are some clear similarities in the word usage of the word “Ekankar” via Radhasoami and “Eckankar” via Paul Twitchell.

Kirpal Singh of Ruhani Satsang has consistently said: “Naam or Word BOOK ONE”
VARIOUS NAMES OF GOD

The sages and the saints have described God in innumerable terms, as for instance Swami or Soami, meaning Lord God; Nirala (peerless or without a compeer); Anami (the nameless); Har Rai, Agam or Alakh (the incomprehensible or the ineffable); Ram Rai or Sat Purush (the eternal Truth or unchangeable permanence); Ek Ankar (the one life breath or live principle); Puran Chetan Purush (complete consciousness); Akal (timeless or the deathless one).

All these are just attributive or qualitative names - names signifying one or another of God's attributes.

Such names simply describe any one aspect or facet of God as appealed foremost to someone's individual liking. Thousands of such names appear in holy scriptures: Ram (all- pervading), Rahim (gracious or merciful), Girdhari (encompassing), Murari, Allah, Khuda, Wah-i-Guru, and the like. The Jews call Him Yahweh or Jehovah. All these names are worthy of our adoration for each one of them tries to single out some aspect of the Beloved. I revere each one of Thy names, O God!” (2 Basant M1) http://www.ruhanisatsangusa.org/naam/naam_b1_intro1.htm

Guru Nanak's: the JAP JI - translation and comments by Sant Kirpal Singh

There is One Reality, the Unmanifest-Manifested; Ever-Existent, He is Naam (Conscious Spirit), The Creator; pervading all;
Without fear; without enmity;
The Timeless; the Unborn and the Self-existent; Complete within itself.
Through the favour of His true Servant, the Guru, He may be realised.
He was when there was nothing. He was before all ages began; He existeth now, O Nanak,
And shall exist forevermore.

The text as given constitutes the Mul-Mantra or the basic principles as taught by Guru Nanak. God is described as the One Supreme Being (Nirankar), the Unmanifest- Manifested (Ekankar), the Eternal Verity, the Conscious Spirit pervading all forms that emanate from Him-He upholding the whole creation. He is not apart from His creation, but is immanent in every form.

The work for the reader to do here is to compare Twitchell's uses of the word Eckankar, to Kirpal Singh's use of the word Ekankar. Then take that further back to Singh's sources and have a good look at Shiv Dayal Singh, Salig Ram, Sawan Singh, Jamail Singh, and all the other numerous Radhasoami gurus from the past to the present.

Something that will assist here is to remember Dr. Julian Johnson's writings in several books and The Path of Masters 1939, in particular.

In the literature of the saints, God is expressed by many words, such as Soami, Ekankar, Nirankar, Radha Soami, Akal, Nirala, Anami, Agam, Alakh, Sat Punish, Prabhu, Prabhswami, Hari Rai, Akshar, Parameshwar, Akshar Purush, etc. All of these words have been coined in an effort to convey to human intelligence some idea of what the saints think of God, or Lord God, the highest power.
Ekankar means the 'one oneness', the body of oneness. Nirankar means 'without body or form'. Soami or Swami means the 'all-pervading lord'. Radha Soami — radha, 'soul', and soami,
'lord' — 'the lord of the soul'. The word radha, in Hindi, when reversed becomes dhara. This means 'current' or 'stream of ener- gy', the attribute of the soul. When the dhara is reversed, when it turns upwards away from the creation, it becomes radha, the soul.

The whole universe is considered as one, the true Ekankar. There is perfect oneness in the universe, which is also coexistent with God — infinite, unlimited. Hence, the Soami is Nirankar, that is, formless. As such, he is without personality, hence without name.

Pg 10 -1. The author is referring here to Maharaj Sawan Singh, who passed on in 1948. He was succeeded by Maharaj Jagat Singh, and then Maharaj Charan Singh. The present living Master is Maharaj Gurinder Singh. (of RRSB)
We may refer to such great Masters of the past as Shams-i- Tabriz and Maulana Rum of Persia; and in more recent times,
Kabir Sahib, Tulsidas, Guru Nanak and his nine successors; and still more recently, Soami Ji, Baba Jaimal Singh, and Sawan Singh Maharaj of Beas, who is the living Master. Many others might be mentioned, scattered all through history.

Pg 26 The great Renaissance of learning began with Roger Bacon, almost three hundred years before Francis Bacon. The torch of genius was then taken up by Leonardo da Vinci. It was thrown
into the sky by Copernicus and Galileo. Their bold stand, in spite of ecclesiastical suppression, gave hope to the timid spirit of the age. The research of Gilbert and Vesalius called out the slumbering genius of pre-Reformation days, and then came Francis Bacon to call together the training school of Europe. It was a time of general awakening from the dark night of medieval ignorance. Savonarola and Luther, John Knox and the Wesleys, came into the general stir not so much to inculcate science but to awaken the stupefied spirit. At about the same time, Kabir Sahib and Guru Nanak were doing the same thing in India. They were trying to quicken the religious and spiritual instincts. In America the pilgrims were at that time too busy fighting the Indians and building themselves homes to bother much about new concepts in religion and science That came later. It was an era when the whole world was just beginning to sit up and take notice. Nevertheless, it was the birth period of modem scientific thought.

Pg 89 Guru Nanak said: "Conquer the mind and you conquer the world."

Pg 135 The religion of the Sikhs in India is distinctive. It has never gained world reputation. Although now numbering several million adherents,
it is still practically limited to the Punjab in India, though Sikhs are scattered all over the world. Yet this religion is most
universal in its fundamental principles, and is nearer to Sant Mat than all other teachings.
This religion was founded by Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 a.d., and died in 1539. He was contemporaneous with Kabir Sahib. After Guru Nanak came his nine successors.
Pg 136 As intimated above, the content of the Sikh religion is so nearly identical with that of Sant Mat that there is but little reason to attempt a separate analysis. Guru Nanak and his spiritual succes- sors were saints, Satgurus in the true sense of the word, and conse- quently their teachings coincide with those of all other saints. There can never be any difference between the teachings in any age of
the world.

Pg 201 Guru Nanak says: "He who earns an honest living and gives away something out of it in charity, knows the Way."

Pg 328 There is a very meaningful sentence written by Guru Nanak, which says:
“Body, mind and wealth; give all to the Guru; obey his commands, and reap the reward.”

Pg 455 Adi Granth Original (adi) Scripture [granth) ; sacred scripture of the Sikhs;
SGGS; (Sri Guru Granth Sahib); contains the teachings of Guru Nanak, his successors and other saints. Compiled chiefly by Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru in the line of Guru Nanak, about the year 1604.

Further consider Kirpal Singh's use of the phrase “the master power above” to Twitchell's definition for the Mahanta.

Kirpal Singh repeatedly stated that he of himself did nothing. Kirpal Singh went further by repeatedly saying that “God is the only Guru/Master”. Compare that with what Marman claims Twitchell wrote in a letter dated July 10th 1957 - “God is the only master”.

Go further and compare Kirpal Singh's use of the phrase “become a conscious co-worker of the divine plan” to Twitchell's slightly different term “become a Co-Worker with God”. What is the difference? Nothing.

That there are direct similarities between Radhasoami teachings and the Sikhs is obvious and overt. They continually quote the Sikh texts and Gurus, especially Guru Nanak.

If there is any relationship between the Sikhs and Paul Twitchell it is merely an accidental one, spawned by the long term influences of Sikhism on the RS gurus in the PUNJAB, the home of Sikhism in India. These similarities in RSSB and Ruhani Satsang and the motivation provided by the writings and lectures and the influences of one Kirpal Singh over Paul Twitchell are far more likely and self-evident to be what is reflected in Eckankar writings when they appear. He did directly plagiarise them after all.

Still the obvious persists such as ECK never means ONE. Eckankar is not a name for God.

There are not enough real similarities and connections with Ik Onkar to believe Twitchell actually derived the name for his modern teaching from this Sikh phrase. There is no substance to such an idea, in our opinion.
Twitchell himself says where he got it from and it wasn't Guru Arjan or Nanak nor anything to do with the 400 year old writings of the Sikhs. Try closer to home and the RSSB Kentuckian, Dr Julian Johnson for starters and Twitchell being unable to spell properly or remember what he had read elsewhere.

Falsehood #3: Guru Arjan was teaching what he knew of Eckankar

Sikhism Disciples of EKANKAR says:

Nanak’s Teachings Only one God
May be called by different names
Beyond being able to be categorized by either Muslims or Hindus Referred to God as “Sat Nam” = true name (no personal identity) Other names:
Ekankar – “one lord” (most used today) Wahi Guru – “hail to the guru”

The Three Principles of ECKANKAR

In the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad Vol I, pg 131, (Fubbi Quantz via) Paul Twitchell says:
He must recognize only that God is and that he himself, as Soul, also is. Soul is never anything else but this.
(1) It is always in eternity.
(2) It is always in the present NOW.
(3) It is always in the heavenly state of God.

These are the three principles of ECKANKAR which It must come to understand and know well. Out of these principles springs the doctrine and philosophy of ECK. There is nothing more to say and there is nothing less to say.

By the realization of these three principles the chela becomes a transparency for the divine impulse. He comes into a greater awareness of the divine plan in this world, and his part in it. He now rests in the arms of the Mahanta,
the Inner ECK Master, and relies upon him to give him this divine guidance.

The Three Pillars of Sikhism

Guru Nanak formalised three basic guidelines for Sikhs:

1. Naam Japna (focus of God),
2. Kirat Karni (honest living) and
3. Vand Chakna (sharing with others).

With these 3 values, the Guru knew that the person would achieve spiritual elevation and material happiness in this world. "Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows -O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them!" (SGGS p 8)

More detail

1. Naam Japna: The Gurus led the Sikhs directly to practise Simran and Naam Japna – meditation on God through reciting, chanting, singing and constant remembrance followed by deep study & comprehension of God’s Name and virtues (Gurbani the Compendium of ETERNAL truth).

The inner voice of the Sikh thus stays immersed in praises and appreciation of the Creator and the ONE ETERNAL GOD Waheguru and his WILL. The Sikh is to intuitively practice and stay focussed on the True Path through every breath throughout his life. Various ways were gifted to the Sikhs to remember and tread on this path of righteousness. To begin with and as a social habit, recite the Nitnem banis daily in remembrance of the grace and Kirpa (blessing) of the Almighty. 'Early to bed & early to rise...' is the FIRST STEP towards the Gate to Sikhism.

2. Kirat Karni: He expected the Sikhs to live as honourable householders and practise Kirat Karni – To honestly earn by ones physical and mental effort while accepting both pains & pleasures as GOD's gifts and blessings. One is to stay truthful at all times and, fear none but the Eternal Super Soul. Live a life founded on decency immersed in Dharam - life controlled by spiritual, moral & social values.

3. Vand Chakna: The Sikhs were asked to share their wealth within the community by practising Vand Chakna – “Share and Consume together”. The community or Sadh Sangat is an important part of Sikhism. One must be part of a community that is pursing flawless objective values set out by the Sikh Gurus and every Sikh has to contribute in whatever way possible to the common community pool. This spirit of Sharing and Giving is an important message from Guru Nanak.

Sant Kirpal Singh Ruhani Satsang (Divine Science of the Soul) mentions Guru Arjan many times.

Ruhani Satsang [the words mean literally "spiritual gathering"-no denominational or sectarian connotations of any kind], at which all persons, even though professing different faiths and religious beliefs, could be imparted the principles of Spirituality and encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines, in order to gain salvation and peace here and in the Beyond." - Kirpal Singh

There are many texts available through the website for free. See: http://www.ruhanisatsangusa.org/

Quoting from 1954 Kirpal Singh Messages:

“Guru Arjuna of the Sikhs also spoke in the same terms. “ I have the highest abode, and have innumerable worlds to live in. My rule reigns throughout the universe. All creation is subject to me. People sing my praises from home to home, and people own their loving devotion to me in all the world over. My Father has appeared in me and Father and the son both are working as one. O Nanak! Father was pleased so much so that Father and the son have taken the same colour.”

One night both Dr. Julian Johnson and I were sitting at the feet of Master Sawan Singh Ji. He was in a gracious mood. He said, “Whenever we come, we bring our working staff with us. When we have done our work allotted to us successfully at one tour, we are sent to the other fields.” How beautifully He puts His coming to the world, though in very sweet terms full of humility, giving an inkling that He came with an authority from god. Kabir also said in the same way. “We are the knowers of the mystery of the God to be given to the
world at large.”

Master Sawan Singh was not a man of the world, and was not bound to the bondage of the body.”

The ECKANKAR Office mentions Guru Nanak and the Sikh teachings in their letter to David Lane about Kirpal Singh and Paul Twitchell back in 1977.

“Guru Nanak during the 15th century, wrote in his book JAP JI of ECKANKAR.. He had received his second initiation in ECKANKAR through Rebazar Tarzs.”

This is never mentioned in any main book by Eckankar. I'm not sure if it is in the discourses, it could be and I can't remember it. That's a lot of reading to check, btw, so I won't.

I think if Rebazar Tarzs was really Sant Kabir, it would make for an interesting story. Either way, it's still only a story from Paul Twitchell. His word isn't reliable or trustworthy when comes to 'historical things” like that.

--- --- ---

Someone else talks along similar lines to Doug Marman and the meaning of the word Eckankar comes from Ik Oankaar. It is the OM Guru website.

They say that the name Eckankar is **probably** an anglicized version of the first three syllables of the Sikh holy book – the Adi Granth Sahib.

Separating out the syllables of Eckankar, "Ek" or "Eck" means the number one and "Om- Kar" means to make (or chant) the sound of OM, the pranava or Hindu mantra that represents the sound of the creation of the universe. In some interpretations, Omkar is considered to be the deity Brahm, the ruler of a higher plane of being.

The Sanskrit letter OM is nasalized because it contains a chandra-bindu or "moondrop" over it which sometimes leads it to be phonetically rendered as "ong" or "ang". Thus, if the "M" sound in OM is muted by emphasizing the nasalized "O" sound, the Omkar turns into Angkar or Ongkar, and Ek Omkar becomes Ek Ongkar or Ek Angkar, and finally Eckankar.

Other popular English spellings of Ek Omkar are "Ik Omkar","Ik Ong Kar", "Ik Oankar", and "Ikonkar" or "Ik Onkar". All represent the mulamantra or root mantra of Guru Nanak, one of the holiest mantras for devout Sikhs, and a faith statement about the oneness of God.

The name Eckankar can be translated in a straight forward manner as "The sound of OM is Truth or oneness". It can also be translated more poetically as "One universal creator God". To show this phrase in context, the English translation from the Gurmukhi language of the entire first stanza of the Adi Granth Sahib reads:

One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By [the] Guru's Grace.

The late Radha Soami guru Kirpal Singh wrote in his book Nam Or Word that the term Ek Ankar was one of the names of God, and that the English translation of this term was "the one life breath".

Paul uses similar terminology when he writes:

We never "become one with God" as the metaphysicians or religionists claim. What actually happens is that we become one with Spirit, the essence of God. This is what is so often poetically named the Breath of God.
(The Spiritual Notebook by Paul Twitchell, The Illuminated Way Press, 1971, p. 96)

http://www.om-guru.com/html/saints/twitchell01.html

Saying it, DOESNT MAKE IT SO ….. I think they have this wrong, and haven't looked at the whole story properly. Given Eckankar in parts is almost identical with Sant Mat, and Radhasoami it's natural those parts would also show up some similarities back to the Sikh religion and writings.

That is a very different thing tan saying that Guru Arjan was speaking about ECKANKAR, and that Rebazar Tarzs had initiated Gurur Nanak. Twitchell couldn't even write his name clearly, instead saying “Nanka Guru.” That's how little there is directly connected the Sikhs and Eckankar … and there is no relation between the WORDS Ik Oankar and Eckankar ….. Six times removed maybe
yes. For a start Eckankar is not some overall supreme teaching out of which all others have come. It's simply not true. It's only some thing Paul Twitchell combined himself from many pre-existing teachings and hundreds of books he had read, copied parts and then later compiled these into his own ideas, philosophy and beliefs. Most of it he simply made up as required.

So Guru Arjan couldn't be writing about something that isn't even genuine and authentic and real. If it isn't even what it says it is, there's no way for Arjan to be talking about it 400 years ago. All similarities are because the Sikhs came first and Paul Twitchell has integrated similar ideas in Eckankar via Radhasoami teachings and other Indian paths Accidental similarities entirely.

Falsehood #4: This new translation is an attempt at restoring Sukhmani to its original meaning

Assuming that is, that Doug Marman is qualified to know the ORIGINAL INTENTIONS and knows better than Guru Arjan, the other Sikhs gurus, the modern writings about Sikhism, and also knows more than even Twitchell himself. And is competent in producing a BETTER more accurate original text and a “true translation” of the Sukhmani.

Now, that being said, there is nothing wrong or out of place in someone deciding to pick up a good translation copy of the "Sukhmani", and reading it for oneself. World history and experience is replete with such superb spiritual & literary works of poetry.

For example, MARMAN suggests that the word "Sukhmani" means "bringer of peace to the heart."

Well anything that can do that has got to be good for a person. Other suggested meanings for the "Sukhmani Shahib" (the real term) are:

"Dive deep into the lovely heart-rending meanings of Sukhmni Sahib Ji where interpretation of each Gurbani line revolves around the selfless actions of Gurus.."

Sukhmani: Peace of Mind, the Nectar of the Name of God. The word Sukhmani literally means Peace in your mind.

To find out more about the Sukhmani or Sikhism, maybe go to a Sikh temple and ask an expert? Spend some quality time reading some books by expert teachers of the Sikh Path began by Guru Nanak in 1500s.

Sukhmani Sahib texts Sikh online sites

To fill your head with “mythical stories and unfounded beliefs” about Paul Twitchell and Eckankar, plus made-up connections back to Guru Nanak and the Sikh path then best go read some 'MARMANKAR.'

Either way, make up your own mind. At the end of the day, everyone only wants to be heard.

It doesn't matter if everyone doesn't agree with your own beliefs all the time. Everyone is searching for meaning in their Life. It's always a good time to trust in your own instincts and inner nudges.

Peace!

Origins (etymology) of the word Ekankar by James Bean

From Sant Mat Radhasoami Blogspot Friday, January 17, 2014
See http://SantMatRadhasoami.Blogspot.com

The Origins of Ekankar

A question someone asked about this icon image of Guru Nanak: "Can you please tell me more about the symbol on Guru Nanak's palm?"

When a spiritual Master is waving to us in this way, showing the palm of the hand, this means he is giving us his blessing.

As for the symbol: Ekankar (Ik Onkar , ) means "God is One." It is made up of two characters, the Punjabi character for the number 'one' and the Punjabi letter 'Urha' for 'Onkar' meaning 'God'.

"Ekankar" does not come, and has never come from, the "Pali" language or any dialect of Tibetan origin. Rather, it's Punjabi.

"Punjabi is an Indian language, which belongs to the outer-circle of the Indo-Aryan languages and distantly related English being a member of the same Indo-European language family. It is a modern Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the Punjab states of both India and Pakistan. It nearly resembles Hindi and Urdu." http://www.sikhspirit.com/khalsa/punjabi1.htm

Ik Onkar/Ek Ong Kaar/Ekankar are also alternate spellings of "AUM" or "OM" and refers to the Sound Current, the Divine Sound of the cosmos.

Ik Onkar is also the first phrase in the Mool Mantra, the opening phrase of Guru Nanak's Jap Ji (Morning Prayer) in the Guru Granth (Sikh Scriptures).

Julian P. Johnson wrote in his spiritual classic, Path of the Masters:
"In the literature of the Saints, God is expressed by many words, such as Swami, Ekankar, Nirankar, Radha-swami, Akal, Nirala, Anami, Agam, Alakh, Sat Purush, Prabhu, Prabhswami, Hart Roy, Akshar, Parameshwar, Akshar Purush, etc. All of these words have been coined in an effort to convey to human intelligence some idea of what the Saints think of God, or Lord God, the highest power.
"Ekankar means the 'One oneness,' 'the body of oneness.' Nirankar means without body or form. Soami or Swami means the all-pervading Lord."

"Ekankar" does not mean "conscious co-worker of the Divine Plan or God."

However, back in the 1950's Sant Kirpal Singh did coin this phrase, and often used variations of it in his teachings, as can be confirmed with a serious search of his writings, most of which are available for free online.

"Unless one becomes a Conscious Co-worker of the Divine Plan by complete self-surrender and annihilation of ego, the goal of spiritual perfection cannot be attained." (Kirpal Singh)

False Prophets Making Profits Falsely Contrasted with the Way of the Lover for the Beloved

Sultan Bahu once said,
"There are few genuine disciples. People purporting to be masters perpetuate themselves with false promises. They exploit their followers to satisfy their greed."

Bahu also warned everyone to watch out for false teachers who want to be masters over others even though they have never been faithful and loyal disciples of any Master themselves.

"These false prophets
were never disciples themselves,
but they contrive to make disciples of others
as an act of seeming charity.
But they swindle their disciples
of their money and belongings."

"If a master does not end your pain of separation,
he is not even worth calling a Master.
Who would even need the kind of master
who does not bestow spiritual blessing?
Why even go to the kind of teacher
who is incapable of giving proper instruction?"

On this genuine path of the lover and the Beloved there is no need for plagiarizing texts, becoming fake guru, falsifying one's past history and resume'.

Spirituality cannot be photocopied or photo-shopped. It must be lived, experienced. One enjoys the connection with others on an established spiritual path, being part of a community as a humble student, having an overflowing gratitude for the association with a living spiritual Master, a connection to be forever celebrated.

Sultan Bahu:

"If you wish to learn the art of dying while living, go and sit in the company of mystics."

"My Master has planted in my heart the jasmine of Allah's Name."

"My Master is a bird of paradise; he flies with his own kind. Through great good fortune you will have his vision -- if the Lord pulls the strings of destiny in your favour. ...My Master is to me my very life, O Bahu; he has permeated every pore of my being."

"I found a guide so perfect, he opened the window of my heart. I give my life for that guide, Bahu, who told me the Divine Mystery."

"Those who enshrine the Beloved in their hearts have both worlds at their command. Lovers remain completely intoxicated in the ecstasy of their love for the Beloved. They offer their souls to the Beloved while still living, and thus immortalize themselves in this life and in the hereafter." (Hazrat Sultan Bahu)

Sultan Bahu's spiritual teacher (Murshid/Spiritual Master) was Hazrat Abdur Rahman Qadiri, in the lineage of the Qadiriyya Sufi Order founded by Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani.

Yes, it is a little odd, but this happens in Indian dialects being transferred across to the west. People have preconceived ideas from previous western writings about the eastern panths and languages. eg if Blavatsky or Besant said it, then it must be true, kind of a thing.

Anyway, the info came via James Bean, who has for a long time countered the claims by twitchell about what is or isn't. He was a Ruhani Satsangi, not sure what he does now. He and David Lane are good associates on this issue.

Bottom line is, I do not know ..... who is the more reliable or not.

Here is another view, via a practicing Sikh. This is a good forum for more research btw.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

Ek Oankar cosists of two components:

Numeral One (refered to as Ekankar in SGGS) e.g.
Prabh bhave ta kre visthar, Prabh bhave ta Ekankar.(Gauri Sukhmani)

Oora character with open top and hora attached (referred to as Oankar) as in the composition Oankar in
Ramkali Dakhani Rag.

The two components joined together in the Ek Oankar or Beej Mantar as it is called does not simply mean God is
one. This is too simplistic.

Bhai Gurdas ji in his vaars explains the bringing together of the two components.

The numeral One or Ek certainly represents the Oneness of the eternal reality but where universes have been
anhilated and there is "Arbad Narbad Dhudukara". This is also the Sunn Samadh of God. The concept of Sunn
comes from the Mahayan Budhism (Shunyavad) as propagated by the great thinker Nagarjuna. The Sidhs as
spiritual descendents of Mahayan Sidhs used the term Sunn (literally, vaccume or void where there is no matter
or energy). Guru ji mean by this the same as the Sidhs or the Budhists did. Ekanakar also means "That which
has the charachteristics of "Ek" "Ank". Ek Ank literally means Numeral One or Number One in mathematical
sense or unity as in set theory or theory of numbers.

The component Oankar does not mean God as such although word Om of the Hindus to which it is related does.

In Gurbani Oankar is equivalent to a sound (The sound of Om). It is referred to as "Oankar Sabad Dhun". This
Oankar Dhun is what is believed in Gurbani as the Hukam or Kawao (Keeta Pasao Eko Kawao), the order for the
creation to begin. In SGGS in Oankar composition the sequence of creation is. "Oankar" etymologically means
Sound of Om. Just as Tunkar means sound of Tun Tun, Kakkaar means sound of "K" as in Five Kakkars, or
Shankar means sound of Shun Shun. Oankar is the sound of Om or Oang. This does not represent God but the
will and order of God to begin creation.

Oankar Brahma Utpat
Oankar Keea Jin Chit

It is the Oankar sound that ordered god Braham to appear (to begin creation of objects)

It is the Oankar sound that order consciousness (Chit) to appear in material bodies.

Thus we can say that Ek Oankar represents both the Nirgun form (Ekankar) of Waheguru and
Oankar as the Sabad Dhuni that brought about the Sargun forms in this universe/s.

Simply assuming it represents God is One is not enough. It is much more than that. It is this
concept basically that differentiates it from the cosmogony of Hinduism and Semitic religions.

Vikramajit ji
Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

You are right in saying that scientifically sound is not possible without matter. Guruji realised this point and this Sabad Dhuni was given the name Anahd Nad. The normal sound that we hear is produced by the hitting of two material objects. It may be air and a diaphram, or two solid objects, and so on. The word for these collisions in Sanskrit is Aahat. The sounds we hear are the results of these kind of collisions causing vibrations that our ears receive and we hear. Third Guruji in Anand Sahib refer to it as "Vaja Pawan Vajayia" meaning that the voice that we hear is like a musical instrument in our throat being played with the help of air in our breath.

However, Indian philosphers as well as Guruji imagined that the formless God, Akal Purkh conveys His will not by audible sounds, which would be impossible in the matterless existence. It was imagined that there must be some other mode humans cannot understand and called it Anhad Nad. Anhad Nad literally means that sound which is not perceived by any collision (An+Ahat = Anhad) but can only be experienced by the elevation of humans to a higer spiritual plane. This Oankar Sabad Dhuni is analogous to this concept. Where it is believed that the Nirgun eternal reality ordered creation through this the Oankar Dhuni (not in any way like the sound we hear with ears) but only God knows or Godmen know about. Moreover, in the existing universes it is this medium may be manages the will or Hukam of God.

Bhai Gurdas's 26th vaar stanza 2 explains thus:
Gur Parmesar Janeiey Sache Sacha Nao Dharayia
Gur (God) be understood as Parmaesar(Lord of all), the true who acquired the true name

Nirankarhu Aakar Hoi Ekanakar Apar Sadayia
From this formless state evolved Ekankar (the entity with unitary charachteristics, Ek + Ank + kar, something which like the numeral one)

Ekankarhu Sabad Dhun Oankar Akar Banayia
From Ekankar the Sabad Dhun Oankar emanated that gave rise to Aakars or shapes implying universes.

Thus we have three stages for creation: First,Nirankar (Nir + Ank + kar, That which is not possible(Nir) to be Anked (measured in human numerals, calculations, estimations, Anant, Agamm), Second, Ekankar (That can be imagined as something similar to number one, or monotheistic eternal reality),Third, Oankar emanation of God's will as Anahad Nad to create creations.

The concept Nirankar is unique to Gurujis and Bhakats whereas for classical Hindu thinkers it stops at just Oankar or more precisely at Om or Oam or Oang. Guruji introduced the use of numeral one and epithet Nirankar.
