The Music of the Spheres - Sound Shabd EK and more
The sweet melody of the Music of the Spheres
is endlessly playing within us.
(Baba Sawan Singh)
The Music of the Spheres is so intense and swift
that It pulls me up in an instant.
(Plato)
What is the Music of the Spheres?
(from the writings of Sant Kirpal Singh)
The Music of the Spheres is a great magnetic Power, and a force that
can
grip the mind. It is characterized by sweet strains and melodious
tunes,
which can be heard, and powerful Light which can be seen and
witnessed.
It is this power and force of Godhead which cannot be comprehended by
the
senses and can only be realized and experienced in super-sensual
planes. It is
a life current that pervades the entire creation…
It may be described as "life-impulse" or "conscious-principle." When
It
begins to vibrate, It produces melodious sound, which is termed Naam
or
Shabd or Word. This Sound Current proceeding from the deep silence of
the
Formless is responsible for all forms and colors, visible and
invisible to the
naked eye. All life hangs on this life-principle. No life can exist
without It.
The Sound-principle is all-pervading; it may or may not be felt, yet
It is
reverberating from top to toe. It is the Kernel and the Essence and at
once
both the material and efficient Cause of the endless universes in
which this
physical earth is but a speck.
It is called variously as Sound, Voice from the Heaven, Music of the
Beyond,
Word or Harmony, Logos or the Holy Spirit, Call from God, or Heavenly
Sound.
This Divine Sound is both the Creator and the Sustainer of the
universe.
In all religions God is spoken of as the Sound-manifest or Life
Principle. It
is a current, live and conscious, and has in It the germs of creation.
It is
because of this link between the Creator and the creation that the
spirit or
soul of a person can cross over the physical body and traverse the
spiritual
regions to reach the True Home of our Father - Sach Khand.
This Ethereal Music is going on in each individual. In fact, there is
no place
without It. Its Divine notes can be heard through the grace of some
Master of
Divine Music or Master-soul.
The body is the Temple of God, for God made man in His own image. But
it
is only after the spirit, through the process of inversion, gets
concentrated
between and behind the two eyebrows that one can hear the Divine
Melody.
This Divine Link is essentially musical in character and has a great
magnetic
force which pulls the Spirit upward to spiritual realms, as Spirit,
Word and
God are of the same essence. When like attracts like, the Spirit is
irresistibly
drawn out of the bodily raiment.
This heavenly Harmony is already within each one of us, and we could
distinctly hear it if we could by leaving the outgoing faculties
through
repetition of certain name or names, withdraw the spirit from the
sensory
plane. The reverberations of this music make us self-absorbed and
self
intoxicated.
This Sound is in Its fullness in everything, though the measure of Its
manifestation may vary from one thing to another. It is even in stones
and
wood, apparently insensate things. The fact is that all things in
Nature are of
atoms and atoms are full of energy as the phrase "atomic energy"
denotes. It
is because of this energy that the atoms are always in a state of
motion and
as they vibrate, a natural rhythmic sound is produced. Recent
researches in
science testify to this truth.
Music without words means leaving behind the mind.
And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the Source.
And the Source of all is Sound.
(Kabir)
All the seven regions are resounding with this Sound.
But the worldly-minded do not hear It,
for the Sound is subtle.
(Hafiz)
The Saving Factor in All the Four Ages
The Path of the Sound Current is the most ancient and the most
natural. It is
in consonance with the Divine Law.
During the last five hundred years, saints like Kabir, Guru Nanak…and
Baba
Sawan Singh have been the great exponents of this Path.
The Muslim divines have been practicing and preaching the Path… The
Prophet Mohammed, Shamas Tabrez, Rumi, and Hafiz, taught this very
thing.
The ancient Greeks also spoke of the Divine Sound. In the writings of
Socrates, we read that he heard within him a peculiar Sound which
pulled him irresistibly to higher spiritual realms. Plato (and
Pythagorus) spoke of It as the "Music of the Spheres."
Two thousand years ago, John the Baptist and Christ laid down the Path
of the Word or Logos.
Madam Blavatsky, the founder of the Theosophical Society, has
described It as the "Voice of God."
In the Masonic Order we hear of It as the "Lost Word" in search of
which the Mason Masters set up their Order.
This Sound Principle is the Real Knowledge of the Rishis of old, the
Cult of Eternal Life of Zoroaster, Logos of the Greeks, Tao of the
Chinese, Enlightenment of Buddha and Sound-essence of the
philosophers.
In the Upanishads we find references to the Harmony of the Beyond.
Lord Krishna, long before, was fully conversant with this science. In
the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of the world, we read of music and
that which is heard.
===
Reverse the outward perception of hearing and listen
inwardly to the perfectly unified and intrinsic Sound
of the mind-essence.
(Buddha)
From the life of Lord Krishna we learn how he once jumped into the
River
Jamuna, where lived a thousand-headed poisonous snake. Lord Krishna
won over this monster with the music from his flute; that is, the
Music of the
Spheres. It again indicates that to control the serpent-mind there is
no other
means than the Sound Principle.
(Sant Kirpal Singh)
If you should in this world bring many thousand sorts
of musical instruments together, and all should be
tuned in the best manner, and the most skillful
masters of music should play on them in concert
together, all would be no more than the howlings and
barkings of dogs in comparison of the Divine Music,
which rises through the Divine Sound and tunes from
eternity to eternity.
(Jacob Boehme, 1575-1624, German Christian mystic, theologian)
Hazrat Inayat Khan, a modern Sufi mystic, tells us that this creation
is
nothing but the "Music of God" for It is the outcome or manifestation
of His
Power. He calls it the intoxicating vintage from the Garden of Allah
and has
given an elaborate description of It, as appears from the following
account:
“All space is filled with the Abstract Sound. The vibrations of this
Sound
are too fine to be either audible or visible to the material ears or
eyes, since it
is even difficult for the eyes to see the form and color of the
ethereal
vibrations on the external plane.
"The knower of the mystery of the Sound knows the mystery of the whole
Universe. Whosoever has followed the strains of this Sound has
forgotten all
earthly distinctions and differences; and has reached the same goal of
Truth
in which all the Blessed Ones of God unite. Space is within the body
as well
as around it; in other words the body is in space and space is in the
body."
(Hazrat Inayat Khan)
The divine music is incessantly going on within
ourselves, but the loud senses drown the delicate
music, which is unlike and infinitely superior to
anything we can perceive with our senses.
(Mahatma Gandhi)
The middle region of the sky,
where-in the spirit dwelleth,
is radiant with the Music of Light.
(Kabir)
Traveling through the tunnel, normal cities and towns can be seen on
the
sides of the tunnel. As you travel further, you become conscious of
sounds,
at first indistinct rumblings, then music, laughter, and singing of
birds. There
is more and more light, the colors become very beautiful, and there is
the
sound of wonderful music. The houses are left behind; ahead there is
only a
blending of sound and color.
(Edgar Cayce)
Fortunate I am to have the Lord as my friend and
companion, for endless symphonies keep playing at
His door.
(Guru Arjan)
Just as the colors of the rainbow show the effects of the different
vibrations
of light, and the melodies on the piano show the effect of the
different notes,
so, too, does the entire universe contain various octaves, or rates of
vibration.
These universal harmonics comprise the different levels of existence.
(Jerry Gross)
A Sound is coming from the eternal abode
to call you back.
(Tulsi Sahib)
Out of this temple of the body I am hearing a Sound
calling me, “Come up”. Bell is ringing wildly:
“Come back, my children, come back”.
(Shamas Tabrez)
I have awakened to find violin and cello, flute, harp
and trumpet, cymbal, bell and drum - all within me!
From head to toe, every part of my body is chanting
and clapping! For with constant remembrance of
God, one’s whole body will become a wonderful and
wild Holy Band!
(Hafiz)
The Merciful God has in His mercy removed all
doubts and distrust, O Nanak!
Through the holy Song I am in bliss,
freed from all sorrow.
(Guru Arjan)
He who is born as human and by good luck is
connected with the Sound Current and practices it,
is great. He is the monarch of monarchs, for he will
be one with the Creator.
(Baba Sawan Singh)
At the ambrosial hour of the early dawn,
be you in communion with the Divine Word
and meditate on His Glory.
(Guru Nanak)
---
This Creative Current, filling all space, may be likened to the
electromagnetic waves of the radio. The receiving set is the human
body,
more accurately, the astral body within the physical. The receiving
set,
standing on your table, simply has to be “tuned in” in order to
receive the
Music. Each individual man or woman is a receiving set. As soon as he
is
tuned in by the Master, he is ready to receive “the pure white music”
spoken
of by Kabir. It then remains only to keep the instrument in proper
order to
go on enjoying this melodious bani. Of course, but few get the Music
at
once after their initiation. It takes a little time to develop the
inner hearing.
The entire body, and more particularly the mind and astral body, must
be
cleaned and purified and then attuned to the higher vibrations. After
that,
the Music comes clearly. When one begins to hear it, he is filled with
a
great joy; for there is nothing in the world to be compared with it.
(Julian Johnson, The Path of the Masters)

Q& A with Sant Kirpal Singh
Question: Why is it that it’s so much more difficult to listen to the
Sound
than it is to look for the Light?
Answer: Because the mind is killed with that Sound. Mind would rather
go
into the opening of the cannons rather than hear the Sound because
hearing
the Sound kills the mind forever. (Kirpal

obedient.htm)
Question: Why is it so difficult to hear Shabd?
Answer: Shabd is reverberating in all Universes seen or unseen. The
human
soul and Holy Shabd are of the same Divine Essence. Those who develop
their Inner Consciousness by regular, faithful and accurate
meditations can
listen to this Heavenly Melody anytime they choose to do so. The
novices
do feel some trouble in focusing their attention at the eye-center and
controlling their vibrations and thoughts carefully. Besides, those
who speak
much and waste their precious energy in idle and loose talk cannot
listen to
this Heavenly Melody. It is the inner single-minded devotion and
attention
which grants this Rapturous Listening. Practice undertaken with
perseverance and steadfastness invokes Divine Grace and the initiate
can
listen to the Holy Shabd Dhun.
(Sant Kirpal Singh, Spiritual Elixir, 13)
Question: If the disciple is on the way back to the Father and under
the
guidance of a Living Master, why is it so difficult for him to hear
the Sound
Current?
Answer: It is the scattered attention of the initiate which does not
allow him
to hear the holy Sound Current. Besides, the overwhelming attachment
to
worldly pleasures and sense-gratification stand in the way. The Living
Master is love personified, and as such loving devotion to Him is the
factor
which makes for better inner contact of the Audible Life Stream. It is
rather
the tendency of human mind which does not relish being chained and as
such it requires some discipline to be observed for having an inner
conscious
contact of the celestial melody. At the outset it is indeed difficult
but by
regular practice the soul feels an innate affinity with the Sound
Current,
when inner bliss is experienced with the grace of the Master.
(Spiritual Elixir, 78)
Question: In the meditation I hear the sound of crickets and the
noises one
associates with outdoor. What is happening?
Answer: The sound of crickets is the lowest sound and outer noise
heard by
you shows that you fail to attune yourself completely to the Sound
Current.
You should not apprehend any untoward happening as these are the
entanglements of your own mind which creates similar thoughts for
diverting your attention from inside.
(Spiritual Elixir, 12)
Various kinds of Sounds are heard inside, out of which the Sounds of
the Big
Bells and Conch, Thunder and Drum beat are higher Sounds. When these
higher Sounds are heard, they may be followed.
(Letters to Vermont initiates)
Question: If one practices the Sound Current, but does not go far or
hear the
higher Sounds, does the weight of karma become lighter?
Answer: Yes, the load of karmic debt gets lighter by listening to the
holy
Sound Current even if it is in its lowest links… But one must strive
to catch
higher Sounds for it is the latter that exert a powerful pull upon the
soul by
following which one is led to eventual liberation. These higher Sounds
can,
by loving devotion and practice, be easily differentiated and communed
with
by the grace of the Master-Power which is ever ready to extend all
feasible
help to the aspirants on the Path.
(Spiritual Elixir, 44)
Question: Sometimes when I am not even meditating, I can hear the
Sound?
Answer: It is an auspicious omen and shows your growing receptivity.
The
holy Sound Current becomes audible by regular, faithful and accurate
meditations without closing the ears. This keeps the attention of the
initiate
engaged, but the Sound should be heard by closing the ears regularly,
which
will draw closer, become stronger and ultimately come from above to
lift
you up into the Beyond.
(Spiritual Elixir, 22)
Question: I’ve heard that one should always use one’s thumbs while
doing
the Bhajan practice and not any of the other fingers or earplugs or
anything.
Is that true, and if so, why?
Answer: People who cannot close their ears with their thumbs can do
that
with other fingers or using other things, and there is no harm in
doing that.
Because the main thing is that you should close your ears and that’s
all. You
can do it in any way you want. The thumb is preferred only because
when
we close our ears with our thumbs we can rest our fingers on our head,
and
in that way we can sit in a comfortable position.
(Sant Ajaib Singh, Sant Bani Magazine, May 2003)
Question: (While listening to the Sound Current) Is it correct to put
the
attention here? [He points to forehead.]
Master Kirpal: I've not told you that.
Question: Where does the attention go?
Master: Attention is solely in hearing. But the seat of the soul is
there. You
are always there. If you put your attention there, then your attention
will be
divided. You should be quite cut off from outside, just hear from
within any
Sound that is coming. If any Sound comes from the left, don't pay
attention,
that will give a debasing effect. Only listen to that Sound
attentively which
is coming from the right side. If it is at a distance, don't follow
it. If you are
searching for the origin of the Sound, it will grow faint and die out.
Hear
what kind of Sound comes from the right. In that case, the Sound will
come
closer, become stronger, and ultimately come from above to drag you
into
the Beyond. You are not to repeat the Names at the time. You are not
to fix
your gaze during Sound practice; the seat of the soul is there. Just
hear what
comes.

journey joyfully.
