SUMMARY OF THE SANT MAT TEACHINGS I

"Sant Mat," meaning "teachings of the saints," is a
path of self-realization and God-realization. All saints and
spiritual Masters have taught that there is only one God,
and our soul is of His essence. We can escape the pain
and suffering of life and death and achieve eternal bliss and
happiness only when we merge back into Him. The Masters,
who are realized souls, are sent by the Lord into the world
for only one purpose: to collect those souls marked for
spiritual liberation, teach them the method of God-realization,
and guide them on their inner spiritual journey. It is only
from a perfect living Master that the seeker can receive
initiation and guidance on the inner spiritual path.
The spiritual practice taught by all true saints is a
form of inner meditation designed to merge the individual
souls into God through his Word or "Shabd," which
reverberates within all human beings in the form of spiritual
sound and light. In the Bible, this divine essence is called the
"Word," "Name," "Logos," "Voice of God," and "Wisdom."
Indian mystics have called it "Shabd," "Hukam" ("Command"),
"Nam." It is the "Tao" of the Chinese mystics, the
"Kalma-I-Ilahi" of the Koran. It is the audible life stream,
the sound current, the dynamic reality of God which both
projects the creation into being and carries it back to its
source. This divine Word is God's love manifesting itself in
the creation; the perfect spiritual Master is an embodiment
of that love.
The path of Sant Mat is also called the path of Surat
Shabd Yoga, meaning the "yoga of the Sound Current," the
science of uniting the soul with the Lord. This path requires
a serious commitment from the disciple. Those desiring
initiation must be prepared to live by four principles, without
any compromise or modification whatsoever. These principles
serve as the foundation for the spiritual life of a disciple.
They are: adherence to a lacto-vegetarian diet; abstinence
from alcoholic drinks and narcotics; living a clean and moral
life; and meditation for 2 ½ hours a day according to the
Master's instructions. Sant Mat is not a religion and therefore
does not require its followers to change their religion or to
perform any rituals. It reveals the universal mystic path
hidden within all people, regardless of their religion, nationality,
caste, color, or creed.
The present living Master of the Radha Soami Satsang
Beas is Maharaj Gurinder Singh. He was born in 1954 and
is an initiate of Maharaj Charan Singh. He teaches the same
method of self- and God-realization through inner meditation
on the Word or Shabda as taught by all true saints throughout
history.

BOOKS BY SOAMI JI MAHARAJ (SHIV DAYAL SINGH)

Soami Ji Maharaj was born in Agra in 1818, and Tulsi Sahib
of Hathras was his spiritual guide and mentor. He began
holding public satsangs after devoting seventeen years to
intensive meditation. Soami Ji taught the same spiritual
truths as taught by all true saints regardless of time or place:
the importance of the living spiritual Master, meditation on
the inner light and sound (Shabd), and that God-realization
must be achieved during one's lifetime. Shortly before he
passed from the physical plane in 1878, he instructed Baba
Jaimal Singh to hold satsang and give initiation in Punjab.

years. Soami Ji explains that this is not a new teaching, but
the same mystic principles taught by all true saints throughout
history. He gives details of the inner spiritual regions and the
process of the creation. Also included is a collection of brief
spiritual sayings by Soami Ji, presented as a series of axioms.

about these five sounds. Finally, he arrived at the feet of
Soami Ji in Agra and, in 1856, was initiated by him into
Surat Shabd Yoga, the path of the five sounds. On Soami Ji's
instructions Baba Ji enlisted in the army. He spent 34 years in
the service and retired in 1891, building a small hut at the
edge of the river Beas. There he taught the practice of Surat
Shabd Yoga, or Sant Mat, until his death in 1903, naming
