I was given this name in October of '73; my 16 year.  At the time it was not very popular due to the Disney movie.  Alas, I have not chosen to go for a "new" name now that folks are naming their dogs "Merlin"... although now it seems to be the fashion to change one's name daily.

Tell me about it! My birth name is Ravyn. I can't even use it as a screen
name becoz every possible form of it has been adopted by Gothic Vampyre
Cheerleaders in Teen Chats!

Heh heh.

Try being crowned with a name like Aspen. Every third Druid in Canada is
Aspen. It's driven me back into solitary practice. I've thought about
changing it for years, but I haven't found anything I prefer to it
<sigh>.

I'd better ask...are you interpreting Merlin's post as a statement that
Merlin is his birth name? I don't think that's what he said, I think
he's referring to a ritual name, or 'craft' name, as some would say in
Wiccan circles, but I could be wrong.

My life as a solitary is a strange one.
The Name was given to me as a sort of joke due to my chosen path and taste of
reading material. By the time that the kids I knew heard about it, I was "stuck"
with it. I understood the concept of a craft name: one that no one else would
know of and only used for "magical purposes". I have one of those... but
"Merlin" was "given to me". I then began to use it as a "pen name" in my
writing, drawing, painting and sculpture.

Over ten years later in 1985 I used the name to found "Amulets by Merlin": my
jewelry company. I was only following suit. Even then "Merlin" was not all that
popular.

These days I answer to both "Kirk" and "Merlin" alike. Even my parents use both
of them. I have met more "Merlins" while doing the Pagan events I attend that at
times I think we could develop a special booth on toll roads for us, you know...
like they do for "bobs".

I have been rather fascinated by what names bring to one. "Merlin" is quite a
name to live up to. It demands courage, honor and integrity. Instead of
changing my name, I have decided to attempt to live up to it.

I wish you the best of luck with yours!

yeah I figured that, but can you imagine being named Aspen in the everyday
mundane world? See what I mean? And where it does fit, you can't get to use it
coz of its popularity!

this is why i choose to call my self DReDD, as in judge dredd, also as in an
ancient celtic warrior, though i never can find the referance. i wear the
ring of the griffen order, though any referance to this order has been long
lost to me, it the the ring of my forefather and i wear it proudly for what
this order stood for, though it traces back to the order of the dragon(of
which vladmir was chief) integrity, honour and justice is my flag.

A friend of mine goes by the name Math, in almost every aspect of his
life except at home with his family. It makes for an interesting
situation, especially with the ignorant, who somehow think it has
something to do with mathematics :)

Paul

P.S.: I may have found something I will be switching to, just because I
have been looking for something unique. It's not a tree (oh, well!:),
but it feels good so far, so we'll see.

I go by Nexx in almost anything informal... I've even gotten them to use it
in a couple of classes. Sure, the name is a misspelling of a Latin word
that doesn't even apply to me, but Nexx has a rather long history, so
dropping the name wouldn't really be comfortable (though adding one or two
more might be cool)

Wouldn't have anything to do with a bookshelf full of D&D books, would
it :)

No, actually, it has to do, in a rather indirect way, with one particular
Shadowrun book <g>. Since you decided to drag the story out of me....

In a Shadowrun book (Paranormal Animals of North America, for those of you
keeping score), someone makes a comment who's name is Nex. Turns out Nex
is Latin for violent death. Being young teenaged guys, we got a kick out
of that, and a friend of mine promptly named his next character Nex.

Well, a couple years later, I was first getting on-line through AOHell, and
I needed a screenname. I cast about for anything (I'm lousy at naming
things), and I settled on Nex. Too short for AOL, so I try Nexx.
Someone's using it. Nexx2. Got it.

Well, I drifted around AOL for a while, and started spending quite a bit of
time on the Werewolf: The Apocalypse boards, slowly developing the
character of Nexx (soon Nexx Many-Scars) as sort of an alter ego. I'd been
thinking a lot about being bipolar, and it seemed only natural to begin
naming my various "mood groups". Nexx Many Scars became the name for my
manic side, and I spent a considerable amount of time re-writing my
personal history from Nexx's point of view. He actually did, and in grand
style with little opposition, many of the things I had wanted to do, or
wished to do. Mark Hall receded and became my normal state... neither
really manic or depressive (a note about my depressive state: I don't get
mopey so much as irritable). My depressive state I've never really
named... nothing has every seem to fit onto that one, so I generally don't
even think about him, but I guess I tend to refer to him by whichever name
is handy, usually out loud and in a very annoyed tone of voice.

Well, time went by and more and more people started to know me only as
Nexx. Since they knew me in all my states as Nexx, and I was gaining more
control over myself daily, it became more and more common for me to blur
the distinctions between Nexx and Mark. Most of the time, I'm sort of a
mixture of the two, though I can still tell when one or the other has
influence, and what thought might have been inspired by one or the other
(the poem in my sig was purely a Nexx effort).

Somehow I knew (gee, I wonder how) that somehow it had something to do
with gaming, however little a part it may have played (pun intended) :)

Somehow I also knew you were a bit of a nutbar (welcome to the club :)
