The Archdruid of Ireland
one year at a time since RTE TV began in 1962 has just now featured
1971 tonight, with bill-topping young Sid Rawle and his Hippies
heading for Dorinish Island that John Lennon gave the Hippies in Clew
Bay, off Mayo. It's all so nostalic in the Black & White filmage of
the time, with the Irish economy wakening up for the first time since
Britain left the South in 1922, featuring also the Waterford-born pop-
singer that fabulous Gilbert O'Sullivan, but on a more serious front
the burning of Catholic homes in the North, mostly Belfast, by masses
of Northern Protestants on the rampage, with 600 Catholic families
being made to flee over the Border into the Republic to safety, the
Introduction of Internment in the North of thousands suspected IRA
Men, and the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement,
NICRA., that gave rise to the appearance of a young John Hume, but
also the Provisional IRA.
Casting across the seas then to life footage of Vietnam War and the
massive protest at the Capitol in Washington that year, some of you
will remember all of that - over here I remember watching the actual
fighting, daily, hourly, as it happened, live, in the rice paddy
fields of Vietnam, and wondering what on Earth difference would it
make if Communism ruled a land so far away, and shuddering at the
massive loss of lives and the carnage on all sides, a warning if ever
there was one to the U.S. in Iraq today, fighting wars that cannot be
won.
How on Earth the USA ever got involved in Vietnam after seeing the
finest of French forces including the Foreign Legion being massacred a
few years earlier at Dien Bien Phu is quite beyond me, as is seeing
"our own" British Army go back to Kabul where British Armies
consisting of Irish, Scottish and Welsh had been massacred in the
past, is unbelievable - do they ever learn from history ?
All in all, despite looking back on my young world of 1971 try to
progress, get ahead, I was struck with the similarity with today.
Nothing has really changed except we have more TV channels, cellphones
and computers now - but fast food and drug-ridden countries too ! Are
we any better off today ? In the pocket, yes I can say, but in no
other way, you can have your TV channels, phones and computers, the
air was fresher, and of course we were much younger then.

You're right - they would waltz straight over NATO Forces in Europe,
crack us wide open ! I know, I served years ago with the B.A.O.R. in

the upcoming U.S. election - the Russians are clever enough to know
that. The Russians are crafty, not to be folled with.

and big Celi Bands, Irish Folk groups,
Irish dancing etc etc
all day open air in the streets,
all run by Comhaltas Ceoilteoiri Eireann, CCE,
The massive Irish Traditional Music Association.
I helped found the Kilkenny Branch years ago,
as a traditional accordion player myself,
we now have 800 members in our branch
throughout Kilkenny City and County.
Anybody who wants to learn an instrument
(any instrument)
playing Irish Traditional music,
whether in the 'States, Britain, Australia, NZ, Canada,
there could be a CCE Branch nearby.

Phony elections don't help, I seem to remember
there was a lack of credibility the last time around.
We have the same problem in uk, i don't know anyone

As for our old friends the Russians.
It will prove too expensive for them to wage the war they wanted,

Ps just before the Georgians let loose with there artillery, they were
subjected to a massive mortar attack launched by Russia via dissidents
who wish not to be part of Georgia but Russia. They were supported by
Russian irregulars.
Who ever suggested the Georgians deliberately annoyed the russians
by bombarding Inglisheter, probably is unaware that last year, the
Russians switched the gas pipe off and tried to freeze Georgia in to
submission.
This affected many other European country's including the uk.
My gas bill Shot through the roof and made bottled gas so expensive
that the poor people here that use bottles, are in serious
difficulty's.
This has had a big affect on Trees all across Europe, which are
expected to provide the fuel for heat and cooking instead.

It is a good organisation. My daughter learnt fiddle from them :)

there was no conscription here in either war,
and in fact the British baulked at introducing conscription
