The Mountain stood tall.
Five fathoms high, four fathoms wide,
The Mountain stood tall.
And the Mountain shook and thundered,
The Mountain poured forth rain,
At its peak
Throughout the eternal plain
Midst the groans and sighs of the multitude
Of desperate searching souls in turpitude.
The Mountain shuddered and thundered,
A clamoring peak,
Great and subtle in its Holiness,
Wise and ancient in its consciousness
With pools like eyes at its peak,
Glittering with mirthfulness
Great gash of a mouth, that would speak
"'Forgive them, Oh Lord, for they know not
What they do!'"
And thundering peals of laughter
Midst the terrible slaughter
Of the eternal plain.
"Why, this little fellow,
bloody, beaten, struggling for breath
reminds me of Job.
But Job at least had the sense
To question his maker
Though twas I who was his true nemesis."
Blue sulpher, green fume
A great light above
The Son of Man
Descends like a dove.
Eternal cries of joy and pain
Grief and hope, fear and longing
Moans and sighs confounding
Mixt the sounds of bitter lamentations
Whilst triumphant
The clarion call of the dying groan
Of man's gift of love
Consummates a cacophony
Unknown to mortal man.
"Well, my boy, you seem a bit humbler,
Than when we last met, in the desert.
I trust you see the error of you ways.
I offered you the world
And now, I trust, you see the ways of the world."
The Son of Man, a bit the worse for wear,
Wiped away a tear.
"My Father shall soon free me
from your slavery."
"Your Father!"
The Mountain thundered.
"Why, I am your only Father, here.
But, fear not, my boy.
As Job was a mere toy
In the hands of the Lord
So shall you be, to me.
You shall be under his hand
At my command."
"I do not wager
With the Devil,"
Quoth the Son of Man,
Defiant.
"Oh, no wager required,
I merely wish to see
Over the course of many centuries
How passeth the progress
Of Man as God.
What horrendous genocides
What bizarre depravaties
What detestable enormities
Your mere presence may unleash
On all unsuspecting humanity.
And, at the end, we shall see,
Who hath fared the better.
Job, the Lord, you or me.
So, Begone!"

If a good man were ever housed in Hell
By needful error of the qualities,
Perhaps to prove the rule or shame the devil,
Or speak the truth only a stranger sees,
Would he, surrendering quick to obvious hate,
fill half eternity with cries and tears,
Or watch beside Hell's little wicket gate
In patience for the first ten thousand years,
Feeling the curse climb slowly to his throat
That, uttered, dooms him to rescindless ill,
Forcing his praying tongue to run by rote,
Eternity entire before him still?
Would he at last, grown faithful in his station,
Kindle a little hope in hopeless Hell,
And sow among the damned doubts of damnation,
Since here someone could live, and live well?
One doubt of evil would bring down such a grace,
Open such a gate, and Eden could enter in,
Hell be a place like any other place,
And love and hate and life and death begin.
To the monkey, human noises have Miraculous Powowers.

True Cary. But, it's pretty big for an intelligent being. You know,
"A mountain of a man" wouldn't be 10,000 feet tall. Presenting Satan
as a "mountain" 30 feet high is fairly consistent with the concept of
angels as giants and sons of God in the Bible. Thanks for your
interest, though.

1]Dear Israelis,
Biblically speaking, Jeremiah 3:18 prophesied that the [split]house of
Judah would walk with the [split] house of Israel to form the nation
of Israel.
The house of Judah consisted of 2 tribes namely Judah and Benjamin to
form kingdom of Judah ; and the house of Israel the rest of the 12
tribes forming the kingdom of Israel[not the Nation of Israel].
Prophecies of Jeremiah -Chapter 3 & 6 spoke of God gathering the Jews
back to Zion to form to the state of Israel:
THE creatiom of STATE OF ISRAEL WAS PROPHESIED BY MANY PROPHETS except
Mohammed-the lying prophet- of God after ww2 He gathered the Jews from
Europe to form the state of Israel.
Consequently, even the billions of Muslims going against Israel,
Israel survives all attacks because GOD shield Israel. AS SUCH,
ISRAEL HAS A DEFENCE THAT NO MUSLIM WILL BE ABLE TO BREAK THROUGH.
2] How Jews are defined:
Because of the sins of the Israelites[=Jews] disobeying God in
refusing to acknowlge the New Covenant[revealed in Jeremiah 31:3`-34],
which was instituted by the shedding of the blood of a lamb named
Jesus-the Son of God- who was sent by God[HaShem] to teach the
Israelites the New Covenant[Matthew 26:28] renewing the Old for
redemption of souls just like the shedding of a sacrificial lamb of
the passover that redeemed PHYSICALLY the Jews in the Exodus, the Jews
were punished in WW2.
3]Jeremiah Chapter 3 & 6 prophesied the punishment and gathering of
the Jews back FROM GERMANY[Jer 6:21-23 to Zion. The Jews were punished
[Jer 6:29-30] FOR FAILING TO OBEY THE NEW COVENANT[Jer 31:31-34]
GREATLY to the extent that only ONE TAKEN FROM A CITY AND 2 FROM A
FAMILY by God[Jer 3:14] from THE LAND OF THE NORTH[Europe]-Jer 3:18]
to the land[Zion]-Jer 3:14]-which God had given to the Israelites [Jer
3:18]- to form the Nation of Israel after WW2. Germany was used by God
to punish the Jews[Jer 6:21-24].
4]Descendants of Jacob[Israel] are NOW Israelites:
The Jews from the fallen kingdom of Judah were called Jews as they
were scattered around. The word "Jews" denote[D] the people of the
kingdom of Jedah.
The Israelites[=Samaritans] from the falled kngdom of Israel were also
called Jews ERRONEOUSLY as they were scattered around.
Hence Jews from the kingdom of Judah and Samaritans from the kingdom
of Israel were wrongly called as Jews by others.
God bless Israel

But -- as I am sure you are aware -- there are some literary

Caution is advised.

> Well, there's blue sulpher[sic]. As a chemist, I'm aware

Well, flames burn blue, and sulpher is highly inflammable. It could
be seen as a conjunction of related images. Also, counter-factual
imagery is a staple of creative literature, in general. You see, I'm
doing creative work here, so our normal rules of reality don't apply.
That's the advantage of creativity in the arts and religion. It makes
you think in new ways. Hopefully, anyway. Also, its danger, as I'm
pointing out in this poem, in terms of "Man as God" being a powerful,
counter-intuitive concept in Christianity that can have both good and
bad implications.
Trouble is that an "angel" (Gr. /aggelos/) is a "word-herd" (f. /agge/
+ /logos/), i.e., a "message."
Well, he would be if he actually had a language.
As it is, he's only making monkeymuck of something somebody else
wrote.
So consider that Jeremiah has a lot fewer words than /Hamlet/, then
ask yourself if you're still worried.
As it also was if it was the far-more-likely critty-litter.
(Watch out for the lumps; some of them may still be wet.)
And ugly too. As her photo proves.:)
National Geographic even rejected her app.

Helium is proud to accept (anything but pig shit).
SeZ rec.arts./poems/ right in front of you.
(P.S.: You misspelled "certified." Or "certifiable"...)
The "poem" heading this thread got poasted into rap from one of the
others, or they into the thread for the flame bait (happens routinely,
esp. if both the poetry and the theology are as bad as this).
Some months ago, I had a go-round with a couple calling each other
"cohens," as here; may even have been one of these.
Been on rap 12 years or some such; we have some sort of go-round
with alt.atheism maybe once-twice a year, for which you can usually
blame "Orson Wells as Citizen Cain" or maybe "Peter J. Ross."

Not surprised, as Helium is a very Noble Gas.

The procine excrement cranium was referring to me, not a man.
Tho' doubtless that will be his next lie...
Susan
Just the sort of thing found on poetry groups.
You know, I've noticed that. Antisemitism does seem to be largely
incurable, at least in individuals. Although, the Germans have
certainly improved, as a nation. Mind you, whether they were really
antisemitic or simply insane under the Third Reich is an interesting
question. Most of the Nazis were suicidal.
Antisemitic. Martin Luther, who had considerable influence
on German culture, was rabidly antisemitic -- and Luther
was only building on an aspect of the culture that long
preceded him.
-- cary
Quotes from Martin Luther:
"If I had to baptise a Jew, I would take him to the bridge of
the Elbe, hang a stone around his neck and push him over with
the words 'I baptise thee in the name of Abraham'."
but then eject them forever from this country. For, as we have heard,
God's anger with them is so intense that gentle mercy will only tend to
make them worse and worse, while sharp mercy will reform them but
little. Therefore, in any case, away with them!
In brief, dear princes and lords, those of you who have Jews under your
rule-- if my counsel does not please your, find better advice, so that
you and we all can be rid of the unbearable, devilish burden of the
Jews, lest we become guilty sharers before God in the lies, blasphemy,
the defamation, and the curses which the mad Jews indulge in so freely
and wantonly against the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, this dear
mother, all Christians, all authority, and ourselves. Do not grant them
protection, safe-conduct, or communion with us. . . . With this
faithful counsel and warning I wish to cleanse and exonerate my
conscience.
Accordingly, it must and dare not be considered a trifling matter but a
most serious one to seek counsel against this and to save our souls
from the Jews, that is, from the devil and from eternal death. My
advice, as I said earlier, is:
First, that their synagogues be burned down, and that all who are
able toss sulphur and pitch; it would be good if someone could also
throw in some hellfire...
Second, that all their books-- their prayer books, their Talmudic
writings, also the entire Bible-- be taken from them, not leaving
them one leaf, and that these be preserved for those who may be
converted...
Third, that they be forbidden on pain of death to praise God, to give
thanks, to pray, and to teach publicly among us and in our
country...
Fourth, that they be forbidden to utter the name of God within our
hearing. For we cannot with a good conscience listen to this or
tolerate it...
If we wish to wash our hands of the Jews' blasphemy and not share in
their guilt, we have to part company with them. They must be driven
from our country.
They [rulers] must act like a good physician who, when gangrene has set
in proceeds without mercy to cut, saw, and burn flesh, veins, bone, and
marrow. Such a procedure must also be followed in this instance. Burn
down their synagogues, forbid all that I enumerated earlier, force them
to work, and deal harshly with them, as Moses did...
If this does not help we must drive them out like mad dogs.
The Third Reich made every effort to fulfill Martin Luther's vision

The suicidal insanity of Reich Socialism goes back to Bismarck and the
Unification of Germany (which nutcrackered my own forebears, Catholic
and Lutheran, not Jewish).
The Germanies seem at some study to have been routinely /more/
receptive to Jewish ways, means, and arts than other countries (esp.
England, cf. /Ivanhoe/, etc., and Spain, cf. the Inquisition) until
Hitler got that wild hair up his pseudo-Aryan ass (turns out he didn't
even know what an Aryan was) over the collapse of the thoroughly-
Socialist Weimar Mark.
But everybody's got the Socialism insanity, and Germany's can be
traced to Charlemagne at Aachen, if you care to, but it's a thing so
general as to be specifically meaningless at that reach.
And Charlemagnic paranoia can be fully excused in its having (for
some five centuries) to patrol the marches against the Huns (Vandals)
and Moors (Spain) with only the French for backup.
The same Charlemanic paranoia is being fuelled (by the same Gestapo,
"Gehome Landt Securitei") to watch the Wrong Hand right now, and not
only in the U.S.
Gee, are you saying you're going to cut my salary?
How traumatic. What shall I do?
By the way, I know that a fathom is six feet.
And, sulpher is a very common alternate spelling of sulphur, that fits
the rhyme a bit better. Also, sulpher/sulphur is known as brimstone,
which means "burning stone". It is highly inflammable.
However, if you really hated my poem as much as you say, this gives me
some pleasure. Always nice to have an impact.
Sheesh! "poems"? Don't nobody know how to spell "pomes"
any more? Whatever DO they teach you kids in school nowadays?

Whoa! Trolling rec.arts.poems from alt.atheism! <WHAP!> Why didn't *I*
think of that?
Lessee here, how would we go about that?...I got it! We go with a few
rumors about how Richard Wilbur tried six times to hire on at Hallmark, but
couldn't make the cut! And how Hallmark is REAL poetry, cuz it's sooo
accessible, and what's wrong with that, I ask you. And then a post as to
how that hack "Wystan" <snort!> Auden wasn't a tenth the poet Ogden Nash
was! And...and...
No. See, that's the problem. That won't work, because poetry's not popular
enough in this culture for us to have some famous Really Bad Poets to make
fun of. Where's our Thomas Kinkaid of poetry? The Celine Dionne of verse?
Where are our Poets Illaureate? GET TO WORK, PEOPLE!
Well then, how about I try to get a rise by claiming that the only
Authentic American Poets are guys like Sherman Alexie, because they're the
only Authentic Americans? Yes? No?
Geez, this is a whole lot harder than it looks.

p.s: "Citizen Cain"? Is that clever and funny, or ignorant and
even funnier?
Um, no. "Sulfur" is the other common spelling; depends on
which side of the pond you're on. Like "aluminum" and
"aluminium". (or "tungsten" and "wolfram")
> that fits

Acetone is highly inflammable. Dimethyl ether is highly
inflammible. Put a match to a pile of sulfur, and it
burns quietly.
I, on the other hand, totally screwed up with that red sulfur,
yellow sulfur, black sulfur business. I was thinking
red, white, and black phosphorus.

Your poem was poor and indifferent and certainly not worth hating but if

doggerel a rewarding hobby.

Lat.sp. sulphur, En.alt. "sulfur," not "sulpher."
And pyrite, lit. "firestone," corr. "brimstone," is its principal
ore.
"Fool's gold," and I'd rather find "fool's gold" than gold in the
field. You use it to make fire "from scratch," i.e., by scratching it
with your sword.
The "flint" in your lighter, isn't; it's commercial pyrite. "Stolen
from the Gods" even worse than Prometheus did it.
Sulfur is so poorly flammable that it requires 75 parts nitrate to 10
parts sulfur to burn as gunpowder, and the sublimate ("flowers") can't
be made to burn even in that formula.
The threshold is so high that burning sulfur is ordinarily self-
extinguishing, though strange things happen when it is /added/ to a
burnable mixture.
Or, as in certain rocket fuels, used as an/the oxidizer rather than
as oxidant.

"Hate" is the only emotion you'd understand of the case, so you say
"hate."
He didn't.
The actual emotion is martial (one of competence, so there you are,
then), and is a kind of dead nothing that's perfectly able to
withstand its antithesis indefinitely without even working up a mild
heat, let alone a sweat.
Hate, like sulfur, requires a lot of heat input to keep burning, and
is ultimately only for oneself in the fact that it can't do anything
about the object of its hatred.
Eh?
No, you can't.
Nor can you understand the equally-martial compassion that keeps
trying to teach you not to hammer your thumb.
(Or the back of your head, in the case...)

Actually, we have the Poet Laureate (fka "Advisor") to the Library of
Congress, cf. Billy Collins, Maya Angelou, etc., whose function is no
longer to write poultry, or to pretend to write poetry, nor even to
pretend that your baby can read poultry, but rather to pretend that
your baby can /write/ poultry.
By, of course, writing chicken shit.
But he's not the Celine Dion of poultry, not even the Edsel Ford.
He's the Ryan Seacrest, the Ruben Studdard, the Britney Spears of
American Id... ah, Poultry.

Naaah, I'm a Native American (i.e., I was born here).
As for my writing in English (one of the many Indigenous Tongues of
The Americas, not to mention there being more Native Speakers of
English here than in the rest of the world combined), English was good

Since he pairs it with "Wells," it hasta be the "funny" thingy.
So, you feel my work isn't quite up to the extremely high standards of
the rest of the contributions on these groups?
Hmmmmmm.
Why, do tell me why, I might just be the tiniest bit skeptical about
that?
I'm not sure I enjoy quibbling quite as much as you do. But, each to
his own.
Enjoy your quibbles.
Personally, I prefer ideas.
>

Heh. I'd wondered.
Any /real/ American would have known it's "Red neck, white trash, and
blue-collar."
(And that "sulphur" is what you gots to do to fools.)
Is that like the joke about the stork, the crow and the swallow?
Pretty good, for something you just tossed off. IOW, a pretty good
first draft.
A first draft isn't a poem. If you wish to turn it into a poem later,
I'd suggest working on the third strophe. For one thg, it's too wordy
and throws the whole thing out of balance; for another, it reads like
sporge with linebreaks. Cut it down to 6 or 7 words, so that it
provides a transition from the two 5ers to 8er of the last.
Lots of other places you can fiddle with the wording, but I'm sure you
can do all that better than I; you have years more experience. The
important thing is to tell you it isn't a good poem, but could be.
Man cannot /avoid/ being God. Try it, it only makes it worse.
For those who aren't following another thread:
"God the Father" is everything from that Black Thing 'way over there
(at night) to that Black Thing (trick question, it's the same one, a
geometrical point) 'way over there. Be sure to include yourself at
and as the exact geometrical center of It All.
"God the Son" is that little part bounded by you (or me; no frame of
reference is to be preferred).
"God the Holy Ghost" (the "Trinity" one, not the N.T. one) is what
happens with G.T.S. "touches" G.T.F., i.e, the "touch," one of every
"voice" that cometh from the "mouth" of "God" on fifteen (not "five")
sensory channels, eight common instruments, and a couple heavies (cf.
Brookhaven, SLAC, CERN).
So, of the "three" "persons" "in" "God," you're already every dam' one
of 'em.
And you can either see to being 'em Brightly, Brightly, and With
Beauty, or you can be a squalling little pile a crap in a diaper for
all your life. It's a Free World (no, "God" "Said").
But don't expect Me to Like you.
'Specially if you come to r.a.p. drijbbling babyshit from both ends
of the tube and expect me to pretend it's a Pome.
(That's what wes gots a Poet Laureate for, dammit.)
IMO, your line breaking is all wrong. This kind of Biblical language
needs long, Whitmanesque lines; using short lines it just sounds too,
too pretentious. (That applies to some of my own, as well as yours
here.) Try combining every 3 lines into 1, and see how that reads.
God hath returned.
(Thank you, God.)
Perhaps. But shorter lines are more readable.

Because you think you can add zeros by counting them.
The only "vote" you get anent the arts is to put your money where
your mouth is.
And you ain't even payin' for the /candle/.
Odd. You don't seem to /have/ any...
Can't afford 'em?
Or just afraid of 'em?
Oh. Right. They'll cost you all your Special Powowers.
Don't think so. I sulphur fools gladly.
('Cos then I gets to /light/ 'em.)
True; but that's part of the point. You don't want the reader to zip
through this; making him slow down would meke him or her take it more
seriously, IMO.
Compare:
I have seen
the best minds
of my generation
destroyed by madness,
starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through
the negro streets
etc. etc. etc.
(Let me try to come up with a supporting reason. Umm....
I also think your rhymes would be more effective if hidden as internal
rhymes; the reader's going to hear them without noticing them, so
he's less likely to be critical of any of them.)
Part of the problem is that this really such an abstract exercise.
After all, we're not going to make any money with poetry, almost by
definition. So, what really is the point of writing a poem? In this
particular case, I'm trying to make certain theological notions as
accessible as possible. So, the pure aesthetic types here are getting
all traumatized because it's all too "obvious", and not sufficiently
elegant. In this particular case, that was not my objective. Very
simple, really.
It got lonely out there in the infinite darkness...

Hey, I kinda like ol' Billy. (why do this feel like Eliot's confession
about Kipling?) It's like eating peanuts. Or pretzels. The
earlier stuff: pretzels, definitely pretzels. The later

Yeah, but He spoke Elizabethan American. Try to find
a rhyme for "quoth". Or one for "verily" that doesn't
sound frivolous.
These things are, like, deep.
So he came back to the weeping and gnashing of teeth?

While "Oyotoho-OH!" is said to be Demotic German, it's really just
"singling syllables" like "fa-la-la-la-la."
It isn't always easy to come up with lyrics (this thread is proof

What worries me is your report that this whole thread might now be

I dunno. Zeus did it to produce Athene.
Besides, any PO-wet worth his ink knows that Muses are /always/ a
giant pain to get out of the head and onto the paper. Like other
births, we do it merely because it's a far worse pain to leave 'em in.
What you gotta watch out for in poultry is them as claim they poured
it out directly from the Heart, where it just splashed all over the

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah,
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah,
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
There, see? ENGLISH POETRY
Cf.:

So's the treacle, if you don't watch out (you think the /gobbilins/ is
bad...)
But not really. Georgians (the U.S. South, not the Russian one)
speak a remnant dialect of Elizabethan American. Cf. any of Dockery's
"videos": it's a dialect in which all words rhyme with all other
words.
(Why his "verses" are so incredibly easy (for him) to "write.")
There was an old Georgian who, verily,
Performed his "performance" so hairily,
His audience (both)
Couldn't tell what he quoth,
For they drank up their Dickle most merrily.
(This even has something of the flavor of a remnant Elizabethan
madrigal.)
(Besides the hint of stale bar vomit, I mean.)
