New series of books about the "catacomb," or underground, Russian Orthodox Church during the Soviet years.

ambitious (and handsomely produced) new series of books about the
"catacomb," or underground, Russian Orthodox Church during the Soviet
years. The first volume, "The Russian Golgotha," is scheduled for
release next month.

'The text, by eminent Church historian Vladimir Moss, draws on
previously unpublished materials to provide an inside look at how
Soviet authorities tried, unsuccessfully, to neutralize the underground
Church after effectively taking control of the "official" Orthodox
church by installing a KGB operative as its patriarch.

'I saw the pre-publication galleys and was impressed by the source
materials and the publisher's attention to quality control. There is
nothing else quite like this in English or Russian, and it would be
worth a look, both for individuals and for libraries. The bibliography
alone is worth the cover price.'
