A Courageous Canaanite Lady
Many of the greatest women of the Bible have Hebrew names which contain important insights into their audacious characters. Tamar is one such woman. Twice widowed, she cleverly dupes her father-in-law, Judah, into giving her two sons – one of whom will go on to become the ancestor of King David (Genesis 38). In Hebrew, Tamar (תמר) means “date palm.” It is one of Israel’s most sacred trees and a strong symbol of this woman’s fearlessness.

A Fearless Biblical Mother
Jochebed, the mother of Moses, is an iconic Biblical heroine. She bravely hid her infant, despite Pharoh’s decree to kill all Hebrew baby boys, until she could present him to Pharaoh’s own daughter for safekeeping. The name Jochebed (יוכבד) means “the Lord (YHWH) is glorious (kavod)” – a proud declaration of faith in the One God of Israel.

A Valiant Military Tactician
Deborah, the prophetess and judge, is a rare example of a woman with a major public leadership role in the Hebrew Bible. Despite the highly patriarchal nature of society around her, Deborah brilliantly led the armies of Israel to a major military victory over the mighty Canaanites (Judges 4). Deborah (דבורה) means “bee” in Hebrew – a perfect encapsulation of the deadly sting she delivers to the enemy.
