When I was very young, I wandered around the country quite a bit. I
remember the wide, open skies and the equally vast landscapes. I remember
being alone, and sleeping under small shrubs or on rooftops. I suppose
those experiences were part of my schooling in life. This "song" remembers
those days of wandering and searching.

song #14

a song without music

living out
the days of our lives
we stumble around
wanting to know
where we're supposed to go
who we're supposed to be

ending up
out on the road
isn't half as bad
as ending up
nowhere at all
for the rest of your days

ever try singing
to the tune
of a song gone wrong
ever try humming
a melody
that you don't even know

i got a ride on the bus
that landed me nowhere
got out and walked
a hundred thousand miles
after that

been too long drifting
to know the way back
too long content
to just drift along
a few more miles

i know i don't look
like anyone
you might ever want to know
just another traveler
on my way out of town

singing a song
i never heard before
thumbing a ride
from strangers
stranger than me

singing as i go
adding up the miles
putting old fences behind me
lots of open road
still in front of my feet

places to go
faces to see
voices to hear
and songs to sing
that's me
all over this land
that's my life
all over

living out
the days of our lives
we stumble around
wanting to know
where we're supposed to go
who we're supposed to be

ending up
out on the road
isn't half as bad
as ending up
nowhere at all
for the rest of your days

why be nowhere
if there's somewhere else
to go
why remain anywhere
you can't stand to be
