Fr. John Liadis is not listed in the 2001 GOA yearbook as a priest nor was he
in the 1998 book (both of which I have), nor is there is a chapel or church
listed for Brooksville, FL, in either of those books. Could you please tell me
which jurisdiction St. Nicholas chapel belongs to and where and by whom Fr.
Liadas was ordained.
He is apparently in the HOCNA. :

No. You're blaming the wrong man.
HOCNA has its problems, but this one is or was with the Greek Archdiocese. The
person you named, George Liadis in Roslindale, is a good man and was my
husband's landlord before we married -- his parents attended the ROCOR parish
in Detroit many years back. I wish he weren't with HOCNA, but, he comes from a
pious family and the sex offender in question is NOT he. Besides, the man you
mentioned was George Liadis. The man on the web page is JOHN Liadis.
The pokrov web page says:
>Profile: According to the on-line directory for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese
of Atlanta (as of August 26, 2001), John Liadis is currently serving as a
priest at St. Nicholas Chapel in Brooksville, FL. According to court documents
from 1989, John Liadis:
did knowingly commit a lewd and lascivious act on or in the presence of a child
under the age of sixteen years, to-wit: [victim's name omitted] born January
29th, 1974, by touching or fondling the child on or near her breast or on or
near her vaginal area in a lewd, indecent, or lascivious manner, but without
committing sexual battery, in violation of Florida statute 800.04.
Among conditions of Mr. Liadis' probation he was forbidden to have contact with
any children under 18 years of age. <

Thanks for correcting that, Matushka. We certainly wouldn't want a perfectly nice
priest slandered by this .
Probably this real abuser isn't even Orthodox. I will immediately pull my post

Dear Nektarios,
I removed my own posting on the matter, i.e. permanently expunged it. I don't know who the other Liadis
is who was stated by this website holder to be an abuser. The original question was within what
jurisdiction is the offender and the name appeared in a different jurisdiciton but is not the same fellow
as the offender.

Matushka Anna has vouched this cannot be the same person. First, the person I found
has a different first name. Second, the abuser is in Florida and the non abuser of
same last name is in another state entirely.

Good! Because I was getting ready to point out the difference in the first
names but then I read Matushka Anna's message and saw it had already been
brought to your attention. OTOH, John Liadis is not, and I repeat, is not,
listed as a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in either the current or
earlier yearbook that I have - and I repeat, there is no chapel of the GOA in
Brooksville - according to the same yearbooks!! If he's not HOCNA, he may be
Old Calendar - and I would not have those yearbooks.
Galina, this message is still appearing on the newsgroup.

The priest named George is nice, not the same as person on website
That priest named John who is on website no one can say. No one can find a trace of
him being one of us
Father John M. Liadis is a retired GOA priest still serving at the
GOA's St. Nicholas Chapel in Brooksville Florida.
If you click here: http://www.goarch.org/goa/Archdioceseyearbook2001.pdf
Page 214 shows Fr. John Liadis as retired and lists his address.
Page 192 lists the Brooksville chapel, St. Nicholas, and its address.
The 2000 GOA Yearbook incorrectly shows the chapel as located in
"Brooksfield," (page 140) but shows the correct chapel name and
address, and indicates that the chapel is "serviced by Rev. Fr. John
Liadis." In that same yearbook you will find Fr. John Liadis listed
among the retired priests.

-- If this JOHN Liadis, retired GOA priest who is serving as a priest
at St Nicholas Chapel in Brooksville, FL, was allowed to retire after
his crime or before?
-- Did the GOA attempt to do anything or simply continue to allow him
to be a priest?
-- Now that this is out does he continue at St Nicholas Chapel in FL?

Why is the GOA apparently so unconcerned about this?

Could there be a mental-health aspect to this? In other words, could
the priest momentarily have been out of his right mind when he did
this?
The GOA should have weighed the priest's entire record against this
one incident. If he had had a long and blameless career, then the
proper response was to let him retire quietly.
Subsequently, if the retired priest found himself living near a
priest-less chapel in Florida, what's so wrong with him helping out
liturgically, provided he doesn't violate the terms of his parole?
The concepts of contrition, atonement, and redemption are not alien to
Christianity. As Christ Himself said, "Let him who is without sin cast
the first stone."
If the GOA DOES NOT know about this conviction, it would be nothing
short of miraculous.
There was press coverage.
http://www.skeptictank.org/hs/cabuse2.htm
"REV. JOHN MICHAEL LIADIS, 56, of Largo, FL, was sentenced to 10
years' probation after a no-contest plea to 1 count of committing a
lewd and lascivious act on a child under 16. He was also fined $500,
told to stay away from children, and ordered to undergo a psychiatric
evaluation. He grabbed a girl, 15, the daughter of friends, at a
church retreat. Liadis was relieved of his duties at the church camp.
(NT Times, FL, 11/4/89)"
Moreover, during the 10 year period of his probation Fr. John was
forbidden to be at the Olympic Village Greek Orthodox Youth Center
when children were regularly present. Since he apparently lived and
worked at the center, it is hard to believe that his superiors could
have been kept in the dark concerning the reason behind his mandatory
absences.

First of all, shortly before Fr. John's no contest plea to the 1989
charges, the state attorneys' office in Hernando County served the
priest with notices of intent to offer evidence of additional crimes.
Their office had found three additional victims, from 1979, 1983 and
1984. That's 4 incidents spanning a 10 year period of time.
Secondly, until the exact date of Fr. John's retirement is known,
it's unclear whether he was retired because of his conviction, or
whether he was retired because of his age.
And finally, there is no indication that this "retirement" changed Fr.
John's status at all. He continued to live and work at the Olympic
Village Greek Orthodox Youth Center, which is where St. Nicholas
Chapel is located, as he had prior to his conviction.
> Subsequently, if the retired priest found himself living near a

As indicated above, this scenario does not appear to match what is
known about the situation.
Of course, the other problem with allowing a convicted pedophile to
help out liturgically is the possibility that he might harm additional
children. If the thought of more injured children is not appalling
enough, consider that under the circumstances GOA would be hard put to
avoid liability. Currently most insurance coverage for clergy sexual
misconduct is limited to about $100,000 per incident per year. Awards
for clergy sexual misconduct average $200,000 to $250,000 per victim.
> The concepts of contrition, atonement, and redemption are not alien to

He also said, "...whoever causes one of these little ones who believe
in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone
fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."
4 Orthodox children came to summer camp to learn about God, and were
taught something else entirely by a priest. When considering whether
GOA handled the situation well, that is something that should never be
forgotten.

You consider yourself fit to continue posting here, Gail?
If a priest goes to jail for a crime he is not supposed to come out
and serve. Odd sort of thinking here - if a man has been married in
another church or in no church and is divorced one or more times he
may not be a priest however one can continue to be a priest after
being exposed as a pervert. One does that say about the values of
those making the decision?
