Boy, 4, feared drowned:
By John Celentani and Veronica Gonzalez Daily Herald

A 4-year-old boy was missing and presumed dead
Saturday after he fell into a creek behind the West
Chicago Buddhist temple that also serves as his
family's home, authorities said.
The boy, who was not identified, was playing with
another 4-year-old boy at an embankment of Kress Creek
when he fell in.
The boy lives with his parents at the Myogyoji Temple
at 1S100 Route 59 in West Chicago, officials said. The
friend ran to the temple to tell adults, who called
911 at 1:08 p.m., said Carol Roegner, a spokeswoman
for the DuPage County sheriff's department.
"We're assuming he fell in," Roegner said.
Dive teams from 12 departments searched for the
black-haired boy in the murky creek that feeds into
the DuPage River. It runs behind the cream-colored
temple with the slanted red roof.
Poor visibility in the water and a strong current from
recent heavy rains complicated the search, divers
said.
The boy was wearing a white, long-sleeve shirt with
blue stripes and black pants. He is 3 feet tall and
weighs 55 pounds, officials said.
The search was called off at about 7:15 p.m. because
of darkness but was expected to resume this morning.
Divers searched an area from Route 59 and Kress Creek
to Mack Road, on the north end of Warrenville.
"The high water because of previous rains, the speed
of the current -- there's zero visibility in the water
-- that hampered the divers," said West Chicago Fire
Department Deputy Chief Hugh Stott.
Officials also blocked Route 59 at 1:45 p.m. from
Wilson Street to Joliet Street
The creek stretches for about three-eighths of a mile
before reaching the DuPage River. Its depth varies to
as much as 5 feet, Stott said.
A police dog with the sheriff's department and an
Illinois State Police airplane aided in the search.
A red scooter the boy was apparently playing with was
recovered on the embankment, said Sgt. Dan McCarthy of
the DuPage County Sheriff's Department..
Winfield Fire Department Lt. Steve Evans was one of
the members of the dive team looking for the boy.
He was tied to two people onshore while he searched
the river with his feet, arms and legs.
"There could be something anywhere, so you have to use
all your senses to try and find anything if you can,"
he said.
About a dozen people gathered with the boy's family
for a prayer service late Saturday night.
The temple is home to several members of a small
Buddhist sect called Nichiren Shoshu. A man who
answered the phone at the temple said he couldn't
comment on the search.
"This is an incredibly tragic time," he said. "We're
not in a position to say anything right now."
It has been brought to my attention that some here might use this tragic event
to attempt to show there is something wrong with NS. I hope no one here does
this. Perhaps I shouldn't have posted it but I thought we could all send
daimoku and our prayers to this little boy and his family, who are
understandably grief stricken as any loving parents would be. It is indeed a
sad day for them.
Don't feel bad about posting it. It was in the Chicago Sun Times online, so

Yes, well Jim I made mention of it at another group and one particular Hokkeko
member came back and accused me of being happy about it as if I couldn't wait
to "share the news". A revolting attitude IMO. Despite the issues between the
two sects I find no joy in this little boy's death and feel grief for him and
his family. If I lived in the area, I would attend his funeral and bring fruit
as requested. Please, let's all chant for them.

No one did that before. It was mentioned, after I was told SGI had caused the
death of a man traveling on the plane 911 and that Nikken told her that.
Previously any complaint about people sick or dying in NST was one because of
the treatment ex SGI members received visiting NST, listening to ridicule about
SGI all the time and the basic compassion level there being low towards ex SGI
members. So QUIT rehashing it.
The problems are real, if you want to kick someone for mentioning what is a
real problem, go pick on someone else. Your really getting old.
Everytime SGI tries to help NST it kicks people for agreeing with them.
I am not kissing anyone's feet here. I never have, and thats my benefit.
I dont hang around with holier than thou types.

Despite the very nasty post addressed to me before, I too do not EVER like
noticing people's deaths or misfortune.
And it would be nice if SGI people would not sit there and complain about NST
and then say I am doing it, thats hippicritical but I already know about that.
So, next time you have a problem with someone, dont turn it on me, and make
sure you realize who's problem it really is.

I am owed an apology due to what has occurred leading up to that post, but I
am SURE I will never get one.

difficult this would be to endure. Please, just send daimoku to the little

religion/sect someone is in, it matters only that their child died and they are
suffering greatly. Please, I'm asking you as a friend and fellow

You are angry about this aren't you Regginald? For some reason you are totaly
pissed at the temple and for some reason that you have not shared you blame
them for this child's death. I have heard from others that there was a mtg
going on when this little boy and his friend were playing on the creekbed
unsupervised. If he had been supervised or better yet, not allowed to play
near this water he would not have drowned. Is that how you feel? Remember, it
was this child's karma to have this accident. Hopefully, there is more
supervision amongst the parents now at the temple.

Denise,
I really think Regginald is pissed at the temple and blames them for this
child's death. Perhaps there have been problems before and no one paid any
attention. I have never been to that temple although I have been to
Chicago(great city, btw) but I remember at the old Myohoji there was a pond
just outside the temple in the back that was only surrounded by a wooden fence.
The way kids ran around back then I'm surprised no kid ever fell in. I do
think though there is a better way to deal with the issue than repeating it
over and over here. I would suggest a letter to the temple to figure out a way
to fence off the creek area. They could even have what we used to call "baby
toban" during the mtgs at the temple. Or, the parents could simply watch their
children. It's really just a matter of using good, common sense.

FYI - 1) according to a letter sent to NST/ NSH members by the Chief
Priest of NST-Myogyoji temple, dated 6/01/03, the correct name of the
deceased was Yasuharu Murata.
2) He also stated that: "It seems so fitting that Rev. Taishin Takano, a
former Chief Priest of Myogyoji Temple and currently the President of
NST and Chief Priest of Myohoji Temple in Los Angeles, should make the
following statement after officiating at the 2nd Ceremony for Yasuharu
on the evening of May 13th: "We should understand that this tragedy is
'Sansho Shima', a manifestation of the Three Obstacles and Four Devils.
We need to overcome this difficulty and not be discouraged. 'The best
gift we can give the child is a successful 750th Anniversary
celebration'."
3) He lastly stated that: "I also hope that you will do your best to
encourage many members and guests to attend our celebration of the 750th
Anniversary of Nichiren Shoshu on June 28th, and that many Hokkeko
members will now come to Myogyoji Temple for Evening Gongyo and Shodai,
so we can chant together in front of this Temple's Gohonzon to overcome
this powerful 'Sansho Shima' and to ensure a successful anniversary
celebration in less than four weeks. Let's all do our very best! Thank

My condolences.
And..I will chant for Yasu. Or would that be out of line, that I would chant
for him. My beads are SGI?
D
I think that would be appreciated Denise. I sent a card and
received a copy of the sermon Reverend Murata gave about Yasuhara's
death and that he felt Yasu fulfilled his mission and attained
enlightenment...he explained about sancho shima and the doubt it can
cause...but to not be swayed by it
The fact that they will be putting up a fence to protect the other
children who come to the Temple is also an outcome of the tragedy of
Yasuhara's death.

Any reason for this post the 4th time?

RC replies: Answer - Is there "any reason" for your "OBSESSION" - asking
& counting Up something for "the 4th time", more or less, that just "It
Ain't None of Yo' Bizness", Denise/ CYBIL?! - TLC. LOL.
Listen Up, FOOL! "Buddhism is Reason"; and so, there is absolutely No
good reason for a Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism real-deal, true believer
like humble Stoney (me) to have to "chit-chat" trying to explain
anything about it to a very crazy-ass, multi-personalitied,
non-Buddhist, heathen & pagan, wicked B*tch Witch like you; but, you've
already known & been told that more than "the 4th time" before, Denise/
CYBIL! =A0 ROTFL.
However, since "I've Got My Mojo Workin' On You" - Muddy Waters, maybe
these "hints" will help you to figure out a reason, that is, IF a
heathen & pagan non-Buddhist is really capable of any such kind of
reasoning or NOT:
a) although, the May 10th tragedy was just over 5 weeks ago, Stoney (me)
waited & made the first Arbn posting about a week AFTER the subject/
title - wake & funeral services had been conducted within less than
seven (7) days.
b) in the Nichiren Shoshu, a formal Toba Memorial ceremony is/ must be
conducted every seven (7) days for forty-nine (49) days/ seven (7) weeks
immediately after a deceased person has passed away; and, there are/ can
be more afterward in the first year, and in any subsequent years, or at
yearly intervals, of course.
c) see the above a & b; and, re-read the posting(s); and then, maybe you
(all) will try to pray for the deceased accordingly.

This special memorial ceremony was conducted by the Overseas Bureau
Chief of Nichiren Shoshu and attended by other senior priests
accompanying him who were visitors from Japan as well as NST priests who
were visitors from other temples located in the USA.
Note: June 20th, 2003 was counted the Japanese way as the 42nd day of
his death; so, June 27th, 2003 was marked as the 49th day of his death.
Myogyoji temple is located at 1S100 ILL Route 59 in Warrenville, ILL.
