Subject: reform or rethink
This message reaffirms some of my reasons for resigning
from SGI, which was not an easy decision knowing the
consequences. I have no regrets, many are finding their
voices are being silenced, sadly the only real reform may
come from people voting with thier check books and their
feet and removing both. I do not advocate leaving the SGI
unless you are well informed and prepared for the shunning
and labeling that may follow, however there is life after
SGI and some have regained the joy of faith, practice,
study and widely sharing Buddhist Dharma. Stop The Wars!
Stop the Hate!
The SGI-USA published a demonstrably and legally
actionable libelous
public
statement about the IRG (which the IRG central committee,
after
discussion,
decided not to take legal action about). The SGI-USA was
subsequently
informed of the factual errors and misrepresentations, in
detail.
They have
failed to respond at all, let alone with anything of
substance.
Since the
memo in question came from the SGI-USA, with no specific
authorship,
and
since we have since been informed that it was approved by
the SGI-USA
Central
Executive Committee, it must be assumed that all official
parties to
the
SGI-USA are in agreement, and complicit.
Therefore, Danny Nagashima, Matilda Buck, Guy McCloskey,
Frank
Nakabayashi,
Margie Hall, Greg Martin, Shin Yatomi, and all SGI-USA
employees and
associates, and John/Jane Does 1 through 60 are in
agreement and
complicit in
this libel. In plain terms, they are okay with lies and
misrepresentations
and unsubstantiated (and false) allegations against
SGI-USA members.
I'd say that constitutes grounds for "something new."
In addition, last night I attended the Soka Spirit
meeting for our
area.
Melanie Merrians was the guest speaker. Melanie is a
Zone leader or
some
such (and a lovely and pleasant individual). She had
just returned
from
Japan, where she, with a group of 10 SGI-USA staff
members and 10
"representatives" from around the country attended a
5-day SS
training
session. They met with many folks, including the head of
the SGI
Study
Department (forgot his name), the vice head, Morinaka, SG
President
Akiya,
and others. What she reported that they brought back is
the current
SGI
policy. In short:
1. NSS is the "Nikken Sect," now and forever, apparently.
It has
changed
from its former NSS orthodoxy.
2. SGI is the only orthodox Nichiren group on the planet.
3. The split was entirely a product of Nikken and the
greed and
ambition, and P. Ikeda and the SGI were innocent of any
manipulations,
deviations, or wrongdoing.
4. All "Nikken Sect" priests are interested in is
extracting money
from the
members.
5. To refrain from approaching and attempting to "help"
NSS members
is an act
of mercilessness.
6. To chant for Nikken to see the error of his ways and
recant his
heresies,
etc., is to "chant for his happiness." Nothing else is.
7. To attempt and chant for NSS members to see the light
(a la the
SGI Way)
is "tolerant." To simply consider them from a "live and
let live"
view point
is not (or is "passive tolerance," and not acceptable).
In other
words, the
only way to address the hypocrisy apparent in the SGI
Charter (which
this
question addressed) is to redefine "tolerance" to mean
something it
does not
mean.
8. The reason we don't address any other Nichiren sects
negatively is
that
they do not "resemble true Buddhism," whereas the "Nikken
Sect" does,
and can
therefore fool the innocent masses. The other sects may
safely be
ignored,
as they chant to statues and such.
9. The reason P. Ikeda waited so long to remonstrate
publicly with
Nikken is
that it took "Operation C" and the splitting of the
sangha to
constitute a
serious enough offense to warrant this. Throughout the
years in
between P.
Ikeda met twice monthly with Nikken and privately warned
him and
asked him to
stop the abuses, the fast cars, the sexual nonsense,
etc., but kept
these
discussions private out of concern for splitting the
sangha.
10. The SGI is eternally based on the Nikko lineage and
the Dai-
Gohonzon
(Gakkai version, of course).
That's the latest SGI policy, and given that all of this
is
official "from
the top" (in our top down organization) policy, I have
great doubts
as to
whether or not the SGI-USA is actually capable of reform.
Without
the
continuing control of publications and agenda, they can't
maintain
these
positions, therefore they will not allow reform. Japan
will not.
So yes, let's see what else might work. Or else, let's
consider
going
elsewhere (an individual decision, IMO).

Last night I was watching a TV documentary on the Hare Krishna
movement, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you about it.
Maybe some of you have seen it, it was an American program, fairly
new, from 2001, I think.
The main focus was on what happened to the children of the American
parents who were members of the movement. I got so upset when
watching this program, in fact I could hardly believe what was
presented. I guess the Krishna movement always had a special place in
my heart, it's just so sad how wrong things can go, so utterly wrong.
The children were put in special Krishna boarding schools, they were
abused and humiliated in the most horrible ways, also sexually,
especially the boys. The education they got circled only around
Krishna (they didn't learn, for instance, that our planet is round).
They had to get up before sunrise to chant for
hours and hours, some were sent to a school (well, I wouldn't call it
a school) in India, where the conditions were absolutely horrible.
The children were starving, at the same time luxurious temples or
palaces were being built in front of their eyes. And all this in the
name of a religion. There have been trials against the movement and
demands for compensation, but it seems all charges were dropped.
I simply can't understand how such schools were
allowed in the U.S, as if no official authorities knew what was going
on in them.
As you can guess, I can' t help making certain comparisons with the
SGI. These movements came to the West around the same time, in the
late sixties during the hippie era, they were introduced by Eastern
gurus and leaders, they attracted mostly young middle class students
who were looking for new life philosophies.
I can't help asking certain questions: what if the SGI had taken a
few more steps into that direction? What could have happened to many
of us, and to many of our children? It's a scenario I don' t even
want to think about. Luckily the SGI never isolated its members the
way the Krishna movement did.
But I do remember extremely rigid meetings, hours of chanting,
lectures that seemed to last for ever (we were sitting in a small
room and sometimes I started to feel dizzy because of fatigue and
simple lack of oxygene; but of course you don't dare to interrupt a
high Japanese leader if you are a shy Western woman in your
twenties).
It wasn't very healthy, there was a lot of brain washing, and yes,
now 25 years later I do think I should have spent my weekends doing
something else, something more "constructive" (like reading the
Russian classics! which I still haven't done, or finding a nice
boyfriend!).
I would be interested to know what happened to some of the children
of the most devoted SGI parents. I could imagine that some of their
childhood memories were not that bright. Of course they were not
abused in such a hideous way as the Krishna children, but I do feel
there were a lot of unhealthy elements, and still is, in the way the
SGI worked, and works.<<<

Subject: Fire, Brimstone and Soka Spirit
The latest Justice Chronicle includes this 1989 speech by President Ikeda...
> "the Soka Gakkai is an organization which is promoting kosen-rufu in exact
> accordance with the Daishonin's spirit. Therefore, no matter how hard one
> has striven in his
> practice, if he harms the Law, is hostile to his mentor, or slanders the
> Soka Gakkai, the harmonious group of believers, the hell of incessant
> suffering will inevitably lie in store for him. This is the strict law of
> cause and effect."
Soka Spirit seems to place its emphasis on the "Fire and Brimstone" part of
Sensei's spectrum.....
I question whether that is the way to build a broad web of support for the
movement...
Does it inspire confidence and hope in the hearts of the members? Or does it
use fear of eternal damnation to silence all critical thinking?
If Soka Spirit "thrives on independent thought", as Bruce says, then why does
it constantly reinforce images of fear and retribution in the minds of the
members?
Is there no other way to create "harmonious unity" than by instilling into
the minds of the members the idea they had better keep their traps shut, lest
their words send them into the hell of incessant suffering...?
Does this latest Chronicle make anyone here want to run out and join Soka
Spirit?<<<

November 12th lecture by Greg Martin
Nikken is the Third Powerful Enemy
"The internal devilish function arises in
response to an external stimulus. In this case
the appearance of the Third Powerful Enemy
activates our fundamental darkness causing
the three poisons to gush forth from within.
Sansho Shima, the Three Obstacles and Four
Devils include the Devil of the Sixth
Heaven-arising from within because of
oppression by men of power. In other words,
the appearance of the Third Powerful Enemy,
persecution by saintly priests in cooperation
with secular authority, functions to activate
the Devil of the Sixth Heaven within us. This is
a double punch that can greatly disrupt our
faith.
The internal devilish function, which
appears in response to the external function,
be characterized by a feeling of heaviness, of
inactivity and indifference or apathy, of not
feeling like fighting evil, and of not feeling the
crucial need to stand up and take action.
Herein lies a dangerous trap to be feared. This
internal confusion creates confusion and
conflict between people within the
organization, disrupting our unity. Instead of
fighting the enemies of the Law, We end up
fighting amongst ourselves. We should dearly
realize that is the result of the influence, it is
the working of the devil within us. This is why
this enemy is so powerful. It behaves like a
virus weakening our immune system of faith
exposing us to the infection of doubt and
confusion"
"You find guys with radios "creepy". Fine.

act against freedom of religion."

http://www.cebunet.com/sgi/memo.htm
"Currently, there are four Priests travelling in Europe, some on their way
to Ghana and others visiting the Danto members to hand out Gohonzons.
It would play right into the hands of Nikken if we allowed the building of
a Temple in Germany or in a German speaking country. We must, at all
costs, prevent that happening by utilising our combined strength.
Again: Somebody goes over to Danto and starts a point, but we do nothing.
A line or Danto group starts and we do nothing. It then increases-
regional, registered by law - and if we still do nothing then a Temple
will be built.
Sensei says: "If you challenge evil, then you must decide the time and
the place to destroy evil".
Basically: Choose the 'place' while it is still relatively small, and
this applies equally to the 'time', ie the time to attack is Now."
Initially and especially we should be "pro-active", in other words, be
informed of all the movements of the Nikkensect and apply a practical
system of "counter-action". As you have already been informed, the SGI
Strategy Dept. has been founded at the SGI-Head Office. In the past, the
movements of the Nikkensect have been carefully monitored outside of Japan
and in conjunction with the Bureau of the European Continent, counter-
activities were instigated. Moreover, the Strategic Department has been
provided to strengthen this system. In several countries in which seminars
about the Nikkensect were held, and guidance relevant to this was given,
camapigns to win the members back were carried out. In addition, measures
were taken against the Priests and Danto organisations."
we should establish a fighting spirit throughout the entire SGI
organisation. There have been various activities led by the Strategy
Dept. such as the campaign to win back members. As to the fight against
the Nikkensect, the members in the front line - especially in the Women's
Division - are aware of important information, ie the movements of the
sect and their methods of convincing people. But, if we don't have a
fighting spirit that is strong enough, this information will not reach
those responsible on the next highest level. Or, they receive the
information but neglect to pass it on to the next highest level of
responsibility.
BTW, thank you so much for posting. You really are doing a proper job of
showing the effects of practising with the Ikeda SGI cult. You're doing a
great public service and I hope you continue to post here for a long time.
