Today (September 29) is Michaelmas, which is the name
day of my Ph.D. supervisor, who in the European
tradition usually celebrates with a party.

In folklore it is also the day after which one is not
supposed to eat blackberries, and I think my naked
thorn hill climb was over blackberry vines, though
I don’t know for sure since I didn’t visit the site
when they were in season.

From Google, about the devil’s curse on blackberries:

"With an army of rebel angels he aims to take the throne of God, but is
stopped by Michael the Archangel and flung down to earth. After this, some
Christians believe that he landed on a thorny blackberry bush, and was so
enraged that he cursed, burned, stamped, spat, and even peed on it.”

Well if that is true, then the Orthodox can go on eating blackberries
until 8 November, which is when the Orthodox celebrate Michaelmas.

And those on the old calendar can go on eating blackberries until 21
November Gregorian, since that is when they observe 8 November.
