memories of a small-town girl....

It must have been about 10 years ago, right here in this small-town group,
when there was a larger population that actually conversed non-poetically
(mostly) about their particular small towns....this woman from Georgia & I
began some ongoing chit-chat about this & that, all fairly innocent stuff
with a few double-entendre's thrown in for laughs. But then suddenly she
proposed we rendezvous somewhere in the middle of the country, a
thousand-mile-plus trip for each of us, for a few days in a hotel....well, I
wasn't keen on the idea....I'd seen her picture....I was broke at the
time...recently divorced....and had already experienced an internet meet-up
that left me pretty sour. When she pressed the issue I flat out refused and
told her I'd hate to spoil a good pen-pal relationship by meeting up. Well
WOW - she exploded on me like a can of spray paint in a campfire....angry
accusations, near-psychotic self-pitying rants, the whole bit - a real
made-for-TV-movie situation. After she implied some threats I checked out
her newsgroup posting history and what a history....mostly support groups
for various mental disorders, psychoactive drugs, and last but not least,
genital herpes. Oooh baby, think of the fun I missed out on. Fer sure I
dodged a bullet -or several, or an ice-pick attack in my sleep, as well as a
lifelong disease had I survived the "rendezvous" in the first place.
