For years I was like the mainstream - fully convinced that smoking
helped me to relax.
How else could I believe otherwise?- the evidence was so clear- every
time I started to feel stressed out , I would light a cigarette- and
then, poof!- I would feel normal again.
So it is very easy to see how you might simply assume that smoking
relieves stress.
But at that time I was on up to forty a day- and I really had to ask
myself the question, "Why I am I getting so worked up forty times a day,
to the point where I NEED to have a cigarette to settle down?"
My life wasn't really that stressful at that point, so what was happening?
Eventually, the simple truth hit me like a brick in the face.
The cigarettes weren't doing a thing- in fact- they were actually doing
the opposite!
All I was relieving was the stressful symptoms of withdrawal FROM THE
LAST CIGARETTE.
The ordinary, everyday stresses were still there- the stress of nicotine
withdrawal was simply adding to those everyday stresses and making it
worse, and incredibly, at the same time, making it APPEAR that it was
helping me to relax.
That is the incredible deception of tobacco and nicotine- and millions,
including myself, have fallen for it.
Since finally quitting and eliminating nicotine altogether, I still have
the ordinary stresses of everyday life- but I am grateful that I no
longer also have that monkey on my back to contend with- it makes life
so much easier and less stressful.

Withdrawal iz stressful. That's a nice way to put it. That could be
the point of your piece, Steve O. You want what you had before you
started smoking, which wuz not drug-induced stress from withdrawal,
twenty-five or more times a day.
_______
To be weak and smell strong, use tobacco.

I'm glad you can see that.
Most people can't get further than the mistaken belief that smoking
helps them to relax, rather than creating stress in itself.
