I only attained the rank of sergeant in the service due to not knowing
how to spell lieutenant 'till I got out 'nd went to college.

Evidently I just discovered why I never made sergeant ... I couldn't
spell it back then ... hell I can't spell it now either!

Nah, I'd forgot you was Navy 'nd ya'll had that goofy rank system with
one rank starting at a notch below shave tail that was about equivalent
to Bridge Bilge 'nd them gold bar, silver bar 'nd railroad tracks took
on entirely different meanings. ;-)

Should have remembered you saying you had taken training down at Corpus
Christi.

Seen few Army Captains get the asses in cracks on joint service stations
or facilities, on telephone by smart assing 'cause they thought they was
'bout equal to sombuddy who had introduced they selves as Captain So and
So and turned out to be Navy Captains 'stead of Army Captains.

Corpus was nice, being on the gulf and all. Next it was Beeville,
Texas -not so nice....

Back in high school we had a buddy who joined the Army. He was a tank
driver at Fort Hood, and me and two other guys drove out to see him. So I
know yer end of the woods a little bit, assuming it hasn't changed much in
40 years -and I'll bet it hasn't :) Anyway, our buddy had such a good time
visiting with us that a week after we got back home he showed up -he done
went AWOL. He ended up getting a general discharge :(

Been there, did that AWOL thing a few times. Luckily I got company grade
punishment or article 15 UCMJ, Captain's Mast I reckon, each time. Worst
was a one grade reduction and stiff fine couple of times. Easy come,
easy go back in them early days. Got tougher with time 'nd
professionalism. ;-)

Doubt you would recognize Ft. Hood or Killeen area now, or for that
matter any of the IH-35 corridor from San Antonio on up. Almost all
urban. Like you never get out of town. Area around Hood is almost all
city west to east from Lampasas to Temple 'nd South to Nouth from
Florence to Flat or Gatesville. Even damned armadillos, rattle snakes
'nd scorpions done moved farther west. ;-)

Oh yeah? Say, you could always do a two-fer and come out this way and say
hi to Tim and me and anybody else around these parts. Weren't you going to
do that last year? Anyway, free place to stay including local
transportation and all. I just last week hosted a lady I met on the
internet 12 years ago from Perth, Australia, and her 14 year old son, so
we're in practice... It was a good reason to do all the touristy things we
locals hardly ever do, like Universal Studios, etc. Lotsa fun... She
wasn't an ex-drinker though, and showed up with a suitcase-full of duty-free
booze, and I saw the horror on her face when she learned I just plain don't
drink. But she drank normally anyway, and I wasn't tempted at all to join
in.

Had hoped to a couple of years ago. All plans laid, ticketed on AMTRAK
Tejas Eagle frum Temple to Anehiem, whole nine yards but had some pretty
near emergency medical needs arise that I had no insurance nor VA
coverage on. Put a crimp on my travel plans 'nd mad spending stuff for a
year or more.

Thanks. may do that some day.

Had a low flying Oz Burd land on my door step couple of times, but it
was back before I'd had all I wanted to drink 'nd she decided I was an
empty well not worth priming the pump on. Interesting lady to say the
least. Outback N. S. W. sort. Off sheep station that would have prolly
matched Drogheda of Thornbirds fame, size, terrain and characters
included. ;-)
