I enjoy watching reality based crime shows on TV and I am a regular
watcher of Cops and 48 Hours.

Cops deals with the interactions of criminals with uniform cops and 48
Hours deals with Detectives trying to solve murderers.

I would bet that 90% of the cases involve blacks or latinos. This
percentage is at least double that of their population or do they earn
that percentage of coverage by their actions.

Is it racist? Canada would never allow shows that portray visible
minorities in a negative manner.

I find your last more disturbing that the possibility of your post title
being true.

I can't say I agree with your observation as far as "48 Hours" is
concerned, although it is certainly true of "Cops". The reason is
simple. The kind of crimes that beat cops usually handle take place to a
great extent in poor neighborhoods. Poor neighborhoods are
disproportionately occupied by minorities. Maybe /that/ fact can be
atrributed to racism, but that doesn't make the show itself racist.

And then there's the non-reality based shows. Try and find a sit-com or
kids show that portrays blacks as anything other than the wiser,
near-perfect role model kindly condescending down to their white
counterparts. Is that racist? Of course not -just politically correct.
Perhaps the theory is life will imitate art, like the typical 50's movie
portrayed the typical married couple as having twin beds. It was believed
such portrayals would to lead to less screwing or something. It didn't
work.

And will I be branded a racist here for even mentioning this? You bet.

I posted a link once put up my LA cops. (lost the link) Seemed like 90%
or better of the crimes were Hispanic. On my recent trip to court,
looking at the names listed...., same. LA PD has a 10 most wanted, 9
are Hispanic.

Condescending is in the eye of beholder. I've never noticed but I do
think its wise to offer good role models to children.

50's TV censors reflected 50's era standards, it reflected the culture.
Nothing more to it than that. The ongoing disappearing act of decency
on radio and TV is a result of chasing the dollar. Now..., just watch
somebody brand me an anti capitalist for even mentioning this.

What odds?

Did the typical married couple sleep in twin beds? Was everybody white,
with a white-collar job, and living in a big house like where Beaver Cleaver
lived?
Or is that what the censors wanted us to believe was the culture, rather
than a reflection of the culture?

In English Canada we don't report crime by race or colour. If two
black men rob a bank, colour is not mentioned. French reports do not
hold to that standard as Quebec has its own civil law code.

Anything which causes "harm" to a visible minority which includes,
peoples of colour, natives, fat people, short people, blind and infirm
as well as gays, lesbians and the transgendered and Jews and Muslims
is cause for legal action by the various Human Rights Commissions.

It is Orwellian!!

Probably more a reflection of what religious folks wished for their kids
to see. Think sponsors. Now, with sponsors, its done a 180. Remember,
in a capitalist society, follow the money. <g> It /was/ a different
world. I recall reading the paper (circa 58) and asking my dad what
r-a-p-e- meant. He dodged the question. Todays kids wouldn't have to ask.

LAPD doesn't identify by race either but..., with some (especially
Hispanics) its just obvious.

Orwellian wouldn't involve looking out for minorities (unless it was
considered a method of herding toward one mentality). Hmmm.

Sounds like it's really fucked up! I mean a story about a blind guy
stealing a thousand pairs of sunglasses would lose it's kick if they
didn't mention he was blind. And if the fat guy was too large for the

say he was fat or large or a fucking whale or something ... well fuck
there wouldn't be much sense in even telling the story.

It seems as though Canadian Society is becoming more & more PC all the
time.

You take Canadian Comics, which I think are some of the best there are.
Now, they can fill a club to the rafters & this guy can tell a joke where
500 people are howling & rolling in the isles, but if just one dipshit
get's his feelings hurt & complains, that comic is screwed. I'm guessing
that's why many of them use themselves as the butt end of their material.

Why more of them don't make it big down here is something I'll never
understand.
