We can presume that all of us Canadian alcoholics have made amends to the
Canada Revenue Agency? Right?

Montreal fire exposes $6M worth of pot plants

By Max Harrold, The Gazette, Dec 28, 2009

MONTREAL – An early morning fire in the Villeray area
Monday revealed the presence of an estimated 6,000
marijuana plants, in the second large-scale pot growing
bust in Montreal in two weeks. The street value of the
plants could be as high as $6 million because when mature,
a marijuana plant has a street value of about $1,000.
Firefighters were called to a building on Mozart Avenue
near St. Urbain St. for a fire about 1:15 a.m. It is
believed that a Molotov cocktail was used to start the
fire, Montreal police Constable Anie Lemieux said.
The fire was put out and there were no reported injuries,
but firefighters called police in when they discovered the
plants and some sophisticated marijuana growing equipment,
including lights and irrigation systems.

Montreal police are trying to locate the owner of the
building & the person/people involved in the marijuana
grow op. The find is the second large-scale pot growing
operation busted in two weeks. On Dec. 15, Montreal police
raided two office buildings in an industrial area in the
Plateau Mont-Royal borough and seized 10,000 pot plants
along with thousands of dollars worth of hydroponic growing
equipment. A 55-year-old man was charged in that case,
which police said was the one of the biggest marijuana
seizures in the force's history. But Montreal police
Constable Olivier Lapointe said it is too early to say
whether or not there are links between Monday’s discovery
and the raid on Dec. 16. “When it happens like this, and
we discover the plants by accident because of a fire, it
means we are starting to investigate this (latest) case at
zero,” Lapointe said. Meanwhile, in Laval on Saturday,
police discovered 1,280 plants and 880 pot plant buds when
they were called to a home where the security alarm was
triggered on des Pervenches St. in the Ste. Dorothée
district, Laval police Constable Franco Di Genova said.
The large home was filled with plants and 93 lamps and
irrigation equipment. Anyone with info about Monday’s
discovery is asked to call Montreal police, confidentially,
at 514-393-1133. © Copyright (c) The Montreal Gazette

I don't understand why they just can't legalize it.
i mean, that would stop the problems that all these
gangs are causing right? whats the point of it being
illegal anyway? it's your choice what you want to do
with your life. it's like saying that smoking tobacco
is illegal. it's the exact same thing, yet smoking
tobacco is legal and you don't get all the problems
of gangs around. what don;t people understand? making
it illegal won't stop people from doing it.

@Anthony Kovic- Thanks for comparing our country with a
police state with a dictatorship. You should go live
there if you admire them that much. It's true that most
police state (no drug in Cuba either) are much more
effective at controlling drug usage, but contrary to you,
I would never want to live in a police state.

Patrick, you have plenty of years to make up for lost
time. Just kidding, but that is a rather pointless thing
to be proud of. Lots of people consume the odd drink or
joint in moderation with no ill effects; people who are
too rigid can be almost as scary as addicts. This grow-op
is near my place - no, I don't have anything to do with it,
nor do I know the "business owners". That part of the
neighbourhood is largely wholesale food establishments,
repair shops etc.; formerly there was small manufacturing
but a lot of the factories are being converted into condos,
especially since the Loblaws opening a bit west of there.
Grow-ops are very dangerous for the neighbours because of
the large quantity of electricity used, and often the
illegal power hookups are not safely installed. I favour
legalisation as well, but it would still take controls.
This is not because I smoke marijuana (like many people of
my generation - boomers - I have certainly tried it, but no
more than that, and certainly haven't done so in over
20 years), or because I think it is "neat and cool", as
one would have said way back then, but because the damage
done by criminalisation, jailing and the development of
criminal gangs causes greater harm than the drug itself.

It's time to decriminalize drugs & take their trafficking
out of the hands of criminals. These are medical problems,
& persecuting the victims of drug abuse is counterproductive.

Start locking up these university students that get high!
That will teach some lessons. I am 23 and never smoked,
did drugs or drank in my life. I'm proud of myself.

Anthony Kovic -- Dec. 28 - 4:03 PM

Adopting much tougher laws and enhancing enforcement is
the way to reduce drugs and all the problems they cause,
including gangs. For example, In Singapore there is a
mandatory death sentence for drug traffickers. Needless
to say Singapore is a clean, modern and prosperous society
with a higher GPD than Canada. Their metro and streets are
not only riot-free but grafitti-free and pleasant.

All of us who work hard and legally don't have houses
like that, make you wonder ... not that I agree with
pot grow-ops. what's the worst fine they will get, a
slap on the hands and told they have to sell the house
Where is the justice
We need to be more like america

BradVancouver -- Dec. 28 - 2:38 PM

Damn that would have been a great fire. Talk about
Up In Smoke!! Just legalize already. Stop kneeling
before the Americans.

One can be "saved" by the statute of limitations. Feds is 6 years and
the Provinces vary from 2 years to 10 years. When I got sober, I got
the forms and filed for 6 years. What a mess:-)

Took me ten years to get up the courage, but I finally came clean with
the IRS before me and the Lovely Sister got hitched. Wasn't nearly as
bad as I'd expected. Sure do wish I'd done it sooner.

What the heck makes this "off-topic?"

Mikey's not still around, is he? Wasn't he the one always going on
about how there is no need to make amends for the past?
