Proof of Attendance at Meetings
Sometimes, courts ask for proof of attendance at A.A. meetings.
Some groups, with the consent of the prospective member, have
the A.A. group secretary sign or initial a slip that has been
furnished by the court together with a self-addressed court
envelope. The referred person supplies identification and
mails the slip back to the court as proof of attendance.

Other groups cooperate in different ways. There is no set
procedure. The nature and extent of any group’s involvement
in this process is entirely up to the individual group. This
proof of attendance at meetings is not part of A.A.’s procedure.
Each group is autonomous and has the right to choose whether
or not to sign court slips. In some areas the attendees report
on themselves, at the request of the referring agency, and
thus alleviate breaking A.A. members’ anonymity.

We had a case in Montreal where a group secretary signed a court slip
and it turned out that the real holder of the slip was off doing
robberies and got busted. The secretary ended up being dragged into
court and getting raked over the coals for signing a document without
determining the identity of the bearer.

Personally, I never signed them.

I got arrested for drunk driving in Maryland in 1999. They have a rare
deal there called PBJ, which is a just-once-in-a-lifetime, no
conviction. But you still have to pay the fine (it was $500), do the
probation and attend Alcohol Awareness Meetings (not A.A., but with the
court slip), and I had to attend a M.A.D.D. lecture.

But that was 10 years ago.

There are still a lot of people that come in with court slips to be signed.
Others have to write down for themselves the meeting topic, and the first
and last person who shared. Anonymity goes out the window...

The 1st person was Mary and the last was Terry and the topic was Peace
of Mind.

So I put on my slip .... 1st Mary / last Terry / Topic: Peace of Mind
/ 11-20-09

Yep...flew right out the window.
