Do you dress up for AA meetings?
(or did you, if you no longer go to AA)?

Just curious....

I generally found most people only came in casual clothing such as blue
jeans, but there were always a few that came in suit and tie.

From the pictures I've seen, Bill W was almost always dressed up!
Of course he was the *king* so he had to dress for suck-cess!

No, I don't dress up for AA meetings generally, but I do dress up when
I am the speaker. Slacks, button shirt and tie during summer. When
it's cooler I'll put on a sport coat too.

I was taught that it is an honor being asked to speak so I should honor
the group by appearing presentable.

If I am offering out chips/medallions at a meeting I will stand when
doing so.

It's those "should" or "ought" words that you can't stand, right?

That makes sense.

When I started AA I lived in the city. I saw a lot more dressed up
people. Out here in the rural, there are few dressed up. Several
farmers come in their bib overalls. Most just come in jeans and a
t-shirt in summer and sweat shirts or flannels in winter. One guy who
works with cattle often smelled like cattle, but around here that's a
normal smell. I probably smelled like horses a few times too, but I'm
used to it, so I dont notice it. Cattle smell is stronger, that I
notice.

On the other hand, the Al-Anon women most were dressed up, but that's
just a woman thing in general. There were only 2 women that ever came
to AA around here. The rest did Al-Anon. I never understood that.
There are more drunk women in the bars than men.

Not at all ... Just 'focus' ... as you can see and read ... I didn't
knock you for doing it the way you do it.

Some people need to and benefit from running with the herd ... I'm ok
with that.

Again 'focus' ... as I see it should (see I can use it) be on getting
and staying alcohol free ... Then it ought to be as your pal Mark
pointed out ... then ... getting your shit together.

For those with a god bent ... it's developing a relationship with god
so as to have a better relationship with their fellow man.

Those going the personality change route ... it's developing a
personality where they can have a better relationship with their
fellow man.

Getting one's shit together might take on many meanings and mean
different things to different people. Just as your presentable may.
One need not worry about eye sight or eye sores if one has ears tuned
to the spiritual wave length as they will hear the language of the
heart ... of course the deaf most likely will read or feel the
language of the heart ... but here it seems we are talking the look
good.

A tie or sports coat nor a t-shirt & jeans makes one more or less
spiritual ... might fit more some ritual / custom ... again I stand by
it being an individual deal ... when those in need and hungry come for
nourishment of a spiritual feed it's not the platter the mesage is
served from rather the message itself which is of importance.

When I started in AA most men wore suits or sports jackets to meetings.
Today, half the people look like they've been dragged thru a hedge.

It is hard to convince anyone that yer mentally ok when you look like a bum.
I was taught that if yer going to be sober, then look sober.

definitely understand it.

Putting undue emphasis on looks is more an extension of being the
actor which sadly to say was something ... at least in the end ... we
didn't pull off very well. Which is probably why we shed that role
and took on the one of Director.

Of course if the individual chooses to wear a suit or sports coat ...
that is fine ... but whatever the individual wears won't make them
more or less sober.

No. Dress for success. It provides a psychological boost to the
individual if they feel like they are looking their best. And how
others perceive you makes a difference. Dress like a bum, you will
attract bums.

Or do you feel recovery should be made more difficult?

What was funny when I 1st hit AA was the Professional people ...
doc's, lawyers, etc. where dressing down and the bums were dressing up
.. it really was a crack up even at the time. Funny to see Doc Nick
show up in some cut off jeans and a t-shirt and Wino Jim in his K-Mart
leisure suit.

Little old ladies saying fuck and the biker dudes saying gosh darn ...
I won't for a minute deny one's dress can affect who one attracts ...
but the dress doesn't have much to do with sobriety. I'd much rather
attract a bunch of sober bums then a bunch of hip slick cool
muthafuckers who can't or won't get sober ... let alone maintain it.

But I'd vote for the internal mattering heads and shoulders above the
external ... after all I do believe it's an inside job ... so to
speak. Of course I never wanted to run with the herd ... I just didn't
want to get trampled by the cocksuckers anymore.

Besides I don't think there is a suit made I could wear that would
fool too many people who I am and those who would judge my worth based
on how I look ... well fuck'em ... I never wanted to break bread with
them anyway.

Three things I need not worry about anymore ... being the director ...
being an actor ... or being a doormat.

So again I say let the individual decide for themselves ...

Everyones own ideas :-)

However, I dealt with coal face sobriety - many were chasing their first
week, some a day, or days sober.

Some were living in hostels, half way houses - could scarcely afford to put
something in the basket.

2 chains of thought there - dress well and 'show' them what sobriety could
do for one.

Or - whos going to listen to some guy dressed to the nines speaking 'in
tongues'

Howsomever though and fwiw, it doesn't cost much to be clean shaved (if
you're not bearded), hair combed (if you have any), trousers creased (if not
wearing shorts), and shoes shined (if not wearing sneakers/sandals

I hand out coins/chips to friends often, just because I attend a meeting
near a Central AA office where they have all the coins...I usually ask
them if they want it on the sly, or to be presented at the meeting...A
lot of folks opt for the on the sly method...Hey, it's their coin.

I started drilling a hole through my coins & so did a sponsee of mine,
just because we both were always losing them...Now, we put them on our
key chains..You'd be surprised the guys that say..."Hey, how come you
didn't drill a hole in mine.

Monkey see...Monkey do, or so it seems.

On the other hand, I've seen all of the above sober too.

Yea, there's a limit to coming to meetings (or anywhere in public),
looking like a slob. In fact awhile back I saw a guy get kicked out of
a bar because the guy was so filthy and smelled so bad that he was
driving away other customers. (I was told the guy works for the
sanitation dept. and never bathes).

Everything has it's limits. Personally I never went to AA in a suit and
tie. Then again, I'm not a suit and tie person. But when I went to
meetings (or go anywhere in public), I normally put on clean jeans and
t-shirt. Yet, being busy, there have been times that I've gone to a
meeting right from work, or I'd miss the meeting completely. Several
times I went to meetings with muddy boots, because I live on a farm and
when it's muddy, it's muddy from the moment I exit the house sidewalk to
go to the car. As I said in the past, this caused some hassles at
meetings. Yet, there is no alternative other than not going to meetings
during mud season. The guys who live in town where there are concrete
sidewalks and driveways dont understand this....

I do believe ... I merely stated it is really up to each individual.

Then Mike attempted to read more into it and set me up with his
'should' / 'ought' game.

Then the ball start rolling futher down the runway.

Yes, I agree, the external can affect your internal ...but as the
heading states it's was a question concerning attending AA meetings...
Mike added the speaker portion.

Others have added getting a job or being a success etc. ... My focus
is/was on attending AA meetings ... with the emphasis on sobriety. I,
with my individual opinion is sobriety doesn't depend on 'look good'
... now if we want to discuss how it might affect who you have coffee
with after the meeting or who might be more willing to bed you or what
private events you might get asked to ... and too, the job stuff and
etc. then for sure it can come into play ... still even then it's, I
believe, an individual decision to be made by the individual.

Of course I'm a little weird people say because I put more emphasis on
the individual and what the individual need do or not do then say
getting into and being part of the herd. Doesn't make me better than
or less than imo ... just who I am.

It's like a contradiction of sorts ... to me the whole program is
geared towards the individual yet once you become whatever it is you
as an individual is ... if it differ from the herd than you are
somehow expected to abandon the very thing you have gained ... maybe
that makes sense to others ... but it never has to me.

I'm sure some people get to AA in such a shape they don't have much

There is little excuse, though, for not being clean as most meeting
places have washrooms where one can at least wash hands and face
and comb hair.

I have no problem with babes coming wearing their tightest blue

I don't disagree with you, Fred. However, I've reached a point in
life where I *could* wear anything I want to and there is
absolutely NOTHING that anyone could do about it...aside from
certain places that have stated dress codes. When I was employed, I
had to kow-tow to what my employers wanted as a dress code. I find
it interesting that when I wear the only suit in my possession
(tailor-made, BTW), I get all sorts of "sir" this and "sir" that.
Yet, when I wear, say jeans and a sweat shirt, with just as much
money/credit in my wallet, I sometimes get treated differently. Of
course, now with my mostly bald head and fringe of grey hair, I do
tend to get more respect, regardless of what I wear. So it goes!

I don't believe you. I don't believe most of your stories. You come
off like a Dilbert character called "topper".

Is this one of the reasons folks don't listen to you at meetings? Do
they know that all they will hear are the same old complaints followed
by another brand new lie?

Of course you're going to get more respect in your suit Dave...Seeing as
how your sweat shirt is lettered with "Hey Bitch, show your tits!".

You'd be upset about 9 months of the year around here (my little bit
of the world). Here people wear them to just about any event you can
imagine.

Probably barf. Or laugh their balls off. People who wear butt plugs
are more obvious.

Gary, don't give up so easily on capitalism. Like any other "ism",
it is practiced by *individuals*. Sure, I tend to be a capitalist,
in matters financial. However, in my business...income tax
preparation...I use my position as sole owner and arbiter, to apply
MY values in how I operate MY business, e.g. widows/orphans tend to
get charged lower fees. The wealthy tend to get charged MUCH larger
fees for the same amount of effort on my part. Beginning to show
my innermost leanings, perhaps? Key is, it's my assets and income
at stake. However, if I was administering OTHER people's assets,
e.g. as a public servant, I would NOT be so free and loose with
OTHER people's money. Sadly, both capitalists AND
socialists/liberals are prone to doing this once they are in
positions of power.

Well, I've being out of Grace, so to speak..the group, not the
spiritual state, for several years. Not sure I know of Heather. She
known for high-heeled pumps...open toe, even? I recall in my old,
degenerate days what happened to some poor ladies' shoes/boots when
they left them at our mutual place of employment, over the weekend.
Naturally, I included that in my 4th. Not.

WHY the shorts, unless engaged in some outdoor activity...even

Hell I can't answer for everyone ... and there are plenty of people in

Deliver people wear shorts ... cops on bicycles wear shorts ... what
can I say ... old people wear them / young people wear them ... shorts
are pretty much just accepted ... bare feet and tank tops ... most
places draw the line on them, public places that is ... but you see
enough people in public wearing both ... so they must just avoid the
places that don't allow them.

I've worn them without second thought to so many different places it
would be hard to list them all.
