The San Marino Tuesday night step study wants to know where the reference
to "Wombley's clapboard factory" in the 12+12 is from. No one in these
parts has the faintest idea. Thanks.

I'll bet a note to GSO in NYC with that question would
probably provide an answer, if you don't get one here.

My faint recollection is that the boilers in the factory blew up and
created a huge mess.

It is my belief that Wombley’s never existed; rather, the expression is a regionalism or outdated slang saying used to describe anything that is hopelessly confused and disorganized. I remember my father once rebuking me as a child for my messy room. He said, “This looks like the boiler burst in the clapboard factory.” Recently, I have also heard the expression “explosion in a shingle factory.”

The explosion of the boiler in Wombley's clapboard factory actually took place.(ref.12X12, p149)

Also, in AACA, p103-104, Bill mentions the clapboard factory in his 2nd legacy talk.

I visited East Dorset and a local showed me the foundations behind the Post Office.
