I got the flu and lost 12 pounds in a week?!?!

02-29-2008, 03:19 PM, Anniemal, Minneapolis.
I was holding at 222 lbs. during the daytime & now I'm at 210.
I've spent the last week battling the flu and not eating much.
Which obviously is a great diet plan. (kidding...!)

I know I shouldn't be so excited, but the loss has really
pumped me up to keep losing weight. I'm just afraid once it
comes back, I will be heartbroken.

Does anyone know what the chances of it all coming back?
Or lost weight and kept it off from a bout of illness?
I wouldn't a miss a few of those pounds!

Any opinions would be great.

Honestly, you'll have to just wait and see. Many people lose
weight while being sick, sometimes it comes back at least
partially. There are a lot of reasons to lose weight while
being sick including losing water. I highly doubt it was 12 lbs
of fat you lost, but possibly just weight shifting a bit.

Losing that much weight to flu is likely due to water weight loss.
But chin up little trooper! - no matter WHAT it is that has

it's likely A LOT of water. But hopefully some of it will stay off!

When I got a stomach virus last year, I lost 5 pounds. Thankfully,
none of it came back. Ya know...I got 9 sick days saved up this
year. I could go for a few more pounds to leave me. Think you can
send that bug my way??? lol.

I lost 6 pounds with the flu in 2 days in December. It all came
back after 3 days of eating again.

I'd imagine that at least some of the weight would come back.
Simply because we lose so many fluids when we are sick.
But stick with your newfound motivation...maybe you won't gain
all of it back! Hope you feel all better soon!

I lost 6 or so pounds with my flu bout, and gained 4 back.
It was mostly water, I know I was dehydrated.

I got salmonella poisoning a couple of years ago, and I lost
17 pounds in two weeks. I gained it all back when I started
eating normally again, but since this gives you a boost to keep
going with your weight loss, perhaps you will be able to keep off
some of the pounds you lost.

Gosh. Thanks for all your replies. In my head I know I probably
lost water and muscle over fat...but my heart gets a tickle
when I see 212 [yes, already gaining back]. It is the lowest the
scale has been for years with me on it.
Oh well.

I'm going back to work tomorrow even tho just walking up & down
the stairs gets me dizzy & clammy & tired. I guess everyone at
work has now got the bug & I took a week off. My job is crazy busy
running around for 7.5 entire hours. I'm scared. I can't even pick
up my room today. I'm really dreading going back tomorrow, Sunday.

I hate to break it to you, Dave, but no, you didn't.

You are severely dehydrated. His is a pretty dangerous state to be in, as you have likely lost a LOT of your electrolytes.

Just drinking water won't fix it, either. That will lead to "water intoxication." (Which is not what it sounds like. It means "water poisoning," but that doesn't quite catch the sense of it, either.

I had water intoxication on the Harding icefielf of Exit Glacier. I had sweated out a lot of liquid - this was a pretty strenuous hike, in July - and had been drinking from my two Nalgene bottles. I emptied both of them on the hike, but I didn't think to take electolytes (salt would be the most common one) along with all that water.

The way the guy at REI explained it to me (and he wasn't a doctor, but he was an experienced hiker), I had all this water in my gut, but since I was so low on electrolytes, my body couldn't process it - hydrate my tissues, for example.

The reason I say you didn't lose 12 pounds in a week (how the hell would *I* know?) is that, in general, burning off a pound means burning off 3,500 calories.

A man your size, moderately active, needs somewhere around 3000-3,500 calories to maintain your weight. More if you are very active, or mostly muscle, less if you are sedentary, or have a higher level of bodyfat.

At most, from the flu, if you ate NOTHING, you *might* be losing a pound a day. Not especially likely, since you are less active, but . . . possible, I suppose.

But to lose 12 pounds, you would have burned off 42,000 more calories than you needed.

In a week, you would need about 24,000 - 25,000 calories.

To do what you have suggested, you would have had to eat nothing for a week . . .

AND

Burn off an additional 17,000 calories.

Which is enough to have kept you going for another 5 days.

It just doesn't work that way.

Drink some Gatorade.

Hope you feel better soon.

Rob, I don't know about David's case, but it certainly /is/ possible to
lose 12 pounds in a week. You're math is probably correct when it comes
to normal. permanent weight loss. But professional fighters and
competitive wrestlers frequently do that sort of thing to make their
desired weight class. It's temporary, and it's fluid-based, but it is
possible.

Has tedw finally lured a disciple, rebirthing David P, (Chapel Hill?)
as Anniemal, Minneapolis?

No wonder you hope Dave feels better soon!

You can make your aggregate of cells and fluid lighter by shedding fluid, which is what wrestlers do, but this is not actual weight loss.

With wrestlers, it is an attempt to game the system, and get in a lower weight clas than they really ought to be in. (Their opponent is likely doing the same thing, so it more-or-less balances out.

No doubt I "lost" abot "six lbs" on that afternoon hike . . . Maybe more, if I hadn't taken any water . . . so, yeah, I would have "weighed less" had I gotten on a scale . . . but calling that "actual weight loss" is a bit of a cheat.

Howsabout we promote a "diet" where you take in one less quart of water or fluid per day? A guaranteed loss of 14 pounds in just your first week!

Don't be surprised if in a few weeks it all comes back and then
some...This happens often with people who have been sick...They feel
better, look slimmer and somehow feel they're a lean, mean, calorie
burning machine, often times eating more than normal, then, much to
their amazement, hop on the scale and find out the truth.

I know this from personal experience...When you get sick, a lot of
strange things can happen to your body....Just don't do what I did in
thinking that the buffet was open and I gotta be a part of it.
