Anybody play dirty hearts, spades, or bid whist in prison?
When I was in, we had a choice if you lost at dirty hearts:
drink 10 cups of water, or do 50 pushups. I did the pushups.

Managed (barely) to avoid hard time (prison), but did several stints in
the county jail.

*THE* card game in these parts is euchre. Anybody that plays anything
else is considered highfalutin' and snooty.

Like few others here, never did hard time. Laid out several 30 to 90 in
county jail communal cells. Hearts 'nd Spades mostly as far as cards.
Moon 'nd Forty Two wiff dominoes. About same here with the spit 'nd
whittle crew that congregates on the court yard.

Most time like "Old Men in the Club Car. Penny a point 'nd no one
keeping score.

Does getting the "Go to Jail" card while playing monopoly count for
anything in this thread?

macpduff, yes this song is about trains but not so much
traveling, its about the trains giving way to the 18 wheelers
in the shipping industry, awesome song johnny cash does
a great version also

swiftynotso; Excellent points. I lived through it.
Eisenhower plowed the I-95 right through historic Indian &
17th C. Colonial sites near my home. The Interstate, the
18 wheelers, and the car industry developed together.
Some of our most fertile farmlands lay under the Interstates.
I agree, it's not really about traveling.
It's a song about the soul of America.
When I lived in Santa Fe, I'd get a lump in my throat
whenever the SF RR would roll into town. Somehow,
trains are who we are.

This song really speaks of the United States in a
simpler, more laid back time. When people werent so
damn self-absorbed and had respect for themselves and
each other. I really have hope that the USA will
return to such ways.

Mothers with their babes asleep,
rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel

Thats the way it was and that is the way it still can
be because this is a great country and we are a great
people as a nation. Good job Willie.

ErieBoy; I have complete confidence in the innate
goodness of the average regular American. We have a
powerful yet gentle quality. I've never noticed this
until I lived abroad. Sometimes you have to see things
from a distance to really see. As a New York City girl,
I always worried that NYers in a pinch might not be able
to roll up their sleeves & help the other guy. The days
surrounding 911 put that concern to rest. I think on 911,
the rest of the Country fully welcomed NYCites as Americans.

David got me reminiscing a tad. ;-)

Back 'bout 77 or so, right after I got out of Army, coming back from a
running drunk to Mexico, got stopped coming through Llano, County Tejas.
Luck would have it, I knew both the County Mountie and State Trooper who
teamed up to git me. ;-)

Old one legged Deputy Sheriff 'nd a Legendary tobacco chewing TSHP who
kept a spit can on the dash board of his cruiser.

They nabbed me in Parking lot to German American Club, right 'fore the
Blue Bonnet Cafe down at the Marble falls 'nd Inks Lake Colorado River
Crossing 'nd county line late Saturday Evening. Rode back to Llano in
front seat of black 'nd white and State Trooper had Deputy drive my car
back in and park it unner a tree behind jail. Blew high on breathalyzer
and they locked me in the one solitary walled in single cell on second
floor of Old Red Top. Other three in center section was just barred
doors facing hall 'nd stairwell. About thirty minutes after door slammed
as I was just about resigned to crawl on bunk and sleep it off, heard
rustling out side of solid iron door and pack Pall Malls and book of
Gopher matches come sliding 'cross floor from crack unner the door.

Outside few mosquitoes, it was fairly comfortable night. ;-)

Come morning, Jailer unlocked me, 'nd asked me if I was ready to behave,
'nd when I grinned 'nd said, "Nah, but I will while I'm here." He moved
me out into the end wing tank which covered the south 1/3 of the floor
and housed all the inmates 'cept one Gal they had made accommodations
for in front south cell.

Layed 'round 'till Monday when I seen Judge and got offered either,
dunno 'member exactly, but near as I can recall, $300 fine or 30 days in
Jail. Had money in my wallet, but tole judge, "Think I'll go on 'nd lay
it out."

"Suit yer self Charlie. Git out my court room."

So I did.

Went back out lobby of courthouse and sat down waiting for Deputy to
take me back to jail.

Sheriff came out about half hour later, glanced at me and said, "What
you doing still sitting here Charlie?"

"Waiten fer ride back Jail."

"Yew knows fucken way. Walk. Stop at drug store git yew sum tooth paste,
soap, razors 'nd shit so you be comfortable."

So I did.

Most time five or six inmates bunked 'round outer tank wall 'nd maybe
one or two in center lockup cell. Shitters 'nd showers 'hind the lockup.
Me, one old Granite Hog from out in the rock quarries, an old Colorado
River rat in on DWI, Young kid from N. C. awaiting extradition back to
N. C. 'nd couple other locals for various misdemeanors.

Spent most 30 days raking leaves, cutting grass and trimming hedge and
other chores down around city square and court house. Playing cards or
dominoes, Old Jailer let us keep a guitar in cell and one fellow had he
harmonica. Ate like country king. Think I gained about 20 pounds.

Month later, Jailer handed me my personal belongings, my car keys 'nd
stuff 'nd sed "Adios Charlie. Drive carefully. Maybe next time I over on
Lake Limestone fishing, I run into you."

My Datsun still sitting unner tree in back yard to jail. Door unlocked,
bottle Boones Farm Apple in floor board, fifth Jim Beam unner seat 'nd
my samsonite bag with side pocket flopped open with half dime bag Juarez
grass 'nd sheaf zigzags in plain sight.

I crank er up 'nd see I got almost full tank gas, eased er out over to
main, cross the bridge and headed for Marble Falls. Got cross Colorado
River 'nd Llano County line, pulled into first road side park, rolled me
joint and took hit of Jim Beam, grinned and thought I'd got away clean.

Thirty years and it seem like yesterday.

Don't look like it changed much. My bunk was by window on second floor
right by the big live oak. The Gallows was still up in the tower. Old
Trusty 'nd permanent residence and janitor lived in other end wing or tank.

used to picnic long banks fo the little lake long river that is retained
