Remember when I told you guys what a big deal it is around here when
celebrating your anniversary?

— you go to a meeting every day for a week and pick up your chip.
— aspeech about “how you did it” is required.
— you get someone to present you the chip.
— there is a birthday bash every year where anyone who has celebrated can
pick up another chip and make a speech about themselves.

Now we’ve gotten to the next level. I just saw a flyer on our local AA
website where someone is celebrating their 29th AA anniversary and they are
having a party for him with food and non-stop meetings.

29th ?...Holy shit...I could see them pushing the boat out for 50 years,
or possibly even 40, but 29 ?

I have never made a big deal about my date...Every year, I buy two
current coins, drill holes in them to put on both of my key rings, just
as a reminder to myself, because seriously, at times I have forgotten
how many years I have.

I thought the same. Twenty nine years is a good sized number, but it
seems odd that it's viewed as such a big deal. An even 30 I could
understand, but there are a number of us past that mark so it's not like
it's an exclusive club.

I know how many years I have, but always have to bring up a web calendar
to double check the date. There's been many years when I forgot about it
until it was long past. I don't even mention how many years I've got; if
for some reason it's appropriate for the discussion at hand, I'll just
tell a room full of newbs I got sober when Ronald Reagan was President.
Most looked puzzled.

Those are the ones who don't know who that even was.

Seems a bit much.

My home group does birthdays on the last Friday morning of the month. They usually have donuts and a speaker. (Almost always a group member, but sometimes someone from another Muskogee group, or from Tahlequah, which isn't too far).

My birthday was May 4. I don't want any of that stuff.

On the morning of the day, when they did the coins, I announced it was my birthday, and I would very much like on of the 24 Hour chips, thanks.

(The guy who gave it to me was caught by surprise. "Do you want us to get you a x chip, for the end of the month?")

Nope. 24-Hours suffices, thanks.

Just a thought… maybe the guy is very old or very sick, and not expected to
see 30.

No, I know him. In his 60’s and the biggest braggart I’ve ever known. I’m
told he does this every year, but it’s the first time I heard of it, maybe
because I don’t go to his group.

Agree.

Congrats!

Well that's an interesting approach. I think I know the intent,
but can imagine why it might take folks by surprise.

I'd vote with my feet, SAF I would NOT attend.
