Can anyone provide advise on companies that will insure hovercrafts, nobody in sunny South Texas has even heard of hovercrafts, let alone insure one.

The following was taken from the Neoteric Hovercraft website:

Most people add hovercraft to their Home Owner's Insurance. It's important to
call it a 'boat' and not a 'hovercraft' when talking to insurance companies.
Legally hovercraft are boats.
Two insurance companies we recommend are:

Insurance carriers: John Wright
Forrest Sherer, Inc.
P O Box 900
Terre Haute, IN 47808
Toll free: 877-232-0441
Fax: 812-232-1783

Contact the following company through your agent:
Markle American Insurance
Wisconsin
800-236-9283
Fax: 414-548-3288

Hope this helps you out.

Rock,
I second the reply.
I went to State Farm, (same place my cars are insured at) and told them
I had built a hovercraft (yes I did use the word hovercraft so they
could not come back and say I was commiting fraud) and I told them it
is registered as a BOAT. That was the majic word and they wrote a
policy with out any problems. The only thing my agent asked was for a
picture of the craft to show what condition it was in. So I feel I
definately have covered my a.. and I am not worried about misleading
them. I found once I showed the BOAT registration they did not get
hung up on the hovercraft part of it.

you might want to think this part over again. my car is handled by state farm
as well. my explanation of what a hovercraft was got me some more information:
if they insure your craft, it's insured against the types of damage that boats
take. it's not insured if it's on land during the accident. if it's being
towed your auto insurance covers it, so boat insurance only covers you when
you're in the water. as far as i understand this, it's not even insured if it's
on a fairly tall sand bar.

since my mode of operation takes me over just such things, i went the extra mile
and got real hovercraft insurance.

I highly recommend Markel, as well as the other companies I've listed at my
website.

In Canada it is quite expensive to carry insurance on ATV's/snowmobiles -
therefore most people I know only carry liability insurance. Is it the same
with boats/hovercrafts?

don't know about canada, markel is more expensive than i'd hoped and less
expensive than i feared.

i was afraid of this...now i'll have to go find my paperwork.

found my binder: limits/value deduct premium
---------------------------------------------------------------------
watercraft & equipment: no coverage
watercraft liability-bi: 25/50,000 $92
watercraft liability-pd: 10,000 $38
medical payments: $5000 $100 $40
total: $170/year, or
$90/6mo.

this is with me listed as no experience on watercrafts of this type. however, i
have had a perfect driving record (knock on wood) for quite some time now.

yes, they do offer bigger policies, but with bigger price tags. i thought that
the 25/50k was a bit small, but considering how cagey i am about even getting
near anyone else with it, i figured it was worth having. when i set up the
policies i was extremely strapped, so a bigger number wasn't in the cards.

besides, as i said before, i hardly ever hover where there's people or
property. it's all on small back rivers, that nobody would want to take even a
canoe down.
