Salahuddin Al Ayyubi was born in Iraq in the year 1137 at a place called Tikrit and his real name was Yusuf[^3^]. Salahuddin was a title which means \"Righteousness of the Faith\"[^2^]. He belonged to a Kurdish family that served the Zengid dynasty of Syria and Iraq[^2^]. He was influenced by a scholar named Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani who taught him about his religion[^3^].

Salahuddin rose to prominence as a military commander under the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din, who was a champion of jihad against the Crusaders. Salahuddin accompanied his uncle Shirkuh on several campaigns in Egypt, where he eventually became the vizier of the Fatimid caliphate. He abolished the Shia Fatimid rule and restored Sunni Abbasid authority in Egypt[^2^]. He also expanded his domain by conquering Yemen, Nubia, and parts of Mesopotamia[^2^].

Salahuddin's greatest achievement was his victory over the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, where he captured the True Cross and most of the Crusader leaders. He then proceeded to recapture Jerusalem, which had been under Crusader occupation for 88 years. He showed magnanimity and generosity to the Christian population, allowing them to leave peacefully or stay under his protection[^2^]. He also respected the holy sites of all faiths and ensured their safety[^1^].

Salahuddin's triumph over the Crusaders provoked a massive response from Europe, known as the Third Crusade. Led by the kings of England, France, and Germany, the Crusaders landed in the Levant in 1189 and besieged the strategic city of Acre. After a long and bloody siege, Salahuddin agreed to surrender the city in exchange for the release of Muslim prisoners and a truce. However, the Crusader leader Richard I (the Lionheart) broke the agreement and executed thousands of Muslim captives[^1^].

This act enraged Salahuddin and his army, who fought fiercely against Richard and his allies in several battles. Although Richard won some tactical victories, he failed to recapture Jerusalem or any other inland territory from Salahuddin. The two leaders eventually negotiated a peace treaty in 1192, which allowed the Crusaders to keep a coastal strip of land and granted Christian pilgrims access to Jerusalem[^1^]. Salahuddin and Richard developed a mutual respect for each other during the course of the war, and exchanged gifts and letters. They also agreed to release prisoners on both sides[^1^].

Salahuddin died in Damascus in 1193, shortly after the end of the Third Crusade. He was mourned by both Muslims and Christians as a great and noble ruler. He left behind a legacy of courage, generosity, justice, and piety. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Muslim heroes of all time and a model of chivalry in the East and the West[^1^] [^2^]. His descendants, the Ayyubids, continued to rule over Egypt and Syria until they were replaced by the Mamluks in 1250.
