I located local sources for both 1/8 exterior Luann & 1/8 Marine Plywood.
Both are mahogany. The Luann is not considered "true" exterior although the
glue is waterproof.
The marine plywood is almost $40.00 dollars more a sheet. Do you think it's
worthwhile to go with the marine ply, or can I get by with the Luann. The
plywood will ultimately be fiberglassed anyway, which would protect the
Luann from water damage. I don't mind spending the extra money for the
marine plywood, if the Luann would be unsatisfactory.

Thanks for any advise you could supply me!

this probably comes down to what you expect from your hovercraft. if you want
it to last as long as possible, use better materials. also, if the uh-10f is
the same as most other uh crafts, there is NOT a layer of fiberglass on top of
the wood, except on seams.

regardless, if you get a hole in whatever waterproofing method you have, you
have the possibility that water will be trapped inside and if the wood is
substandard then you will have rot there.

your money, your decision.

Marine grade is better but at the price difference may not be worth the
money. Most important is the glue, if its the same you can use the
cheaper Luan too if you take some precautions. One of the major
drawbacks of Epoxy encapsulation is that it keeps water inside as well
as it keeps it outside. As soon as you have a crack, dent or whatever
and water gets into the wood it will be trapped there forever and cause
rot.

Definitely DO NOT fiberglass the whole deck of the craft. Just fiberglass about
a 3-4" seem on the joints. You will add a lot of weight by glassing the whole
thing, and probably lose all the money you saved on cheaper wood by spending it
on the fiberglass and resin.

On my modified 10F, I used 1/8" interior paneling. It has held up fine, but I
only get the machine out of the garage to race it, and then it goes back in the
garage. I only used the paneling because I'm a poor college kid. If you can
afford it, do it the right way and get the marine plywood.
