I have recently bought a used SCAT hovercraft which I am getting used
to, slowly. It seems that SCAT are no longer in business (?) but does
anyone know the history of the company? I'd be interested to know
anything - hovercraft always seem to attract a crowd and some knowledge
of the background to SCAT would make me seem a little less like a
novice!

HI Mark,
SCAT is basically a copy of a British racing machine. The company has
gone through a few owners. They were built in Miami, Florida, USA from the
mid 1980s to the early 90s. The company then went bankrupt and was sold to a
fellow in Singapore. I think they then built some more personal craft, but
they're now into larger commercial machines. You can see their current
profile on their home page: http://www.planetwork.com.sg/intermarine/scat/
Are Kevin Bedsworth, Bill Flett, or Kent Gano lurking around? They were
some of the insiders that would know the complete story. I remember that it
used to be fun to have the Scat racing team at Hoverallies. Kevin and Bill
have formed a new company, Hovercraft Concepts, which produces a nicer product
than their former employer. You might get a hold of them on their web page
at: http://www.hovercraftconcepts.com/ These and many more manufacturers are
linked on my page.
Have fun with your new toy. If you need replacement skirts/parts, you
can get quality service at St. Louis Hovercraft,

Getting cold down under yet?

Hello Mark:
Scats are still alive and well in Singapore. New designs and prices. Their more
interested now in producing larger crafts for the world shuttle communitys.
Find hirtory and parts for your crafts by typing in "Michael Murphy" - (St.
Louis), "Michael Knight" -
(San Francisco) - or "Scat" into your search engine.
I'm Michael Crisman, CEO of The World Hovercraft Exchange
and one of the original Hovercraft pioneers from back in 1957.
I'm in touch with 2 to 200 passenger crafts world wide, parts, custom
designing, consulting, insurance, financing, etc.
If I can help anyone - just drop me a note:

Hi Mark,

I was the test pilot / flight instructor for SCAT when their plant was still located in Hialeah / Miami Florida. I worked with Kip on the new & improved craft.. this is Denis, Kevin B. & Kevin Y. in the flying prototype of the larger craft SCAT used as a fund raiser for the company, I don't think it ever went into production. Enjoy your hovercraft! http://www.athenswater.com/images/BlueLagoon-SCAT.jpg
