Unfinished Business

It had been awhile since I had hiked the Corridor Trail @ Pilot Mountain
State Park here in Piedmont, North Carolina, USA. I had seen this unfinished
Mill Grindstone before, but had forgotten about it. I wonder what the story
behind it is. Obviously, a lot of prep work was done on the stone. Why
wasn't it completed? Was the stone flawed? When was the initial effort made?
Its been awhile since grindstones were needed.

That crack on the bottom goes all the way across and, on the right side,
seems pretty deep.
