Mink oil on leather boots, smears onto pants

I started to mink-oil my boots a few years ago wiping it in for about
10 minutes/boot. For a while I was trying to find out where stains on
my black office pants came from. I turns out that the mink oil on my
boots was thick enough that when I used the porcelain throne, it would
come off and leave marks on my pants. So I started paper towel to
wipe down the boot after mink oiling it. It alleviated the problem,
but the problem still persists. I'm afraid that if I scrub the boot
anymore with paper towel, there will be no point in mink-oiling it, or
that I will scuff the boot surface.
I don't want to move to a previous product I used (some aerosol spray
can thing) which smelled very chemically. I like mink oil because for
the boot, it's like good old fashion vaseline for the hands. No weird
chemicals.
Is there a "best practice" for avoiding the smeary business? I use
mink oil that actually has a consistency like vaseline (a bit thicker)
and comes in the typical flat cans that you find in shoe stores.
