Witch Hazel is one of my favorite winter blooming plants. The one
pictured below is a domesticated version I bought at a nursery several years
back. They do bloom wild and are often the only splash of color in a winter
hike. The ones in the woods are more yellow than orange and can make quite a
display. And, of course, an astringent is made from them that can be quite
refreshing to a wind burnt aging face. I use it daily. It is important to
find a brand that is not alcohol based.
