Hello,
I am interested in taking up hiking/backpacking. I have a limited amount
of experience, I used to be in boy scouts when I was a young lad(I'm 37 now)
and I did some hiking when I lived in Mesa AZ. I used to love to hike the
face of the Superstition mountains back in `87 and I hiked the Peralta trail
a few times and a few other places out there. I had begun planing a trip
into the Superstition wilderness (which I never did do)when we moved back to
my home state of Michigan (my wife came down with a good case of home
sickness).
It seemed that trails were more plentiful back in Arizona so I never
considered that there might be some good trails here in Mich.(I guess we
tend to overlook the beauty and take it for granted when we get used to
seeing it all the time), until recently. I checked the Mich. DNR website and
their hiking info is under construction.
Can anyone tell me where all the good hiking trails are at in Michigan?
Also is there anyone interested in taking a hike here in Mich. who would not
mind taking along a newbie to show the ropes to?
Thank you,
lbfin88

MI has the longest section of the NCT then anyother, almost 800 miles, plus
many other trails One of your senators is a strong trail supporter Take a
look at www.northcountrytrail.org, maybe they have a chapter near you
(Headquarter in Grand Rapids)

my wife just bought me for my birthday a book on Michigan hikes. It
lists over 600 hikes in the state, each graded, with trailhead locations
and other data. I can't recall the name of the book, but it's large,
say 11X14 inches and has a large blue cover. sorry i can't be more
specific.

you'll be surprised by the number of good hikes in teh state. also
check forest service web pages, they've got some good trails

Sounds like the Trail Atlas of Michigan by Dennis Hansen ISBN# 0930098056
and you should be able to pick it up at any of the major bookstores
throughout the state of MI. I have owned a copy for a few years and it is a
great book.

My dad and I went backpacking on North Manitou Island over the summer...it
is a very good place for any skill level. You ride a ferry 12.5 miles out
into Lake Michigan to get to the island...the ferry departs from Leland,
Michigan.

My name is Thomas Hooker. I am a 60 year old man who loves to hike but not alone. I am having a real hard time finding hiking partners because hiking is so unpopular in my area. I am reaching out to other hikers for help in finding them. I am offering a reward of a $100.00. At this time I only have a one hundred dollar bill so it is a first come first serve offer. The way it will work is if you know a hiker who is open to the ideal of a possible hiking partner you would have them contact me and after I do 3 hikes with them and we decide we are going to be hiking partners you get the money, but only than and not before. Once I have another hundred, you find me another hiking partner I will give you another hundred and so on. If the person does not work out I will let you know why so you can look for another. Due to the response to this ad I may owe you the $100.00 but I pay in order of response and you will be paid. I have no interest in hiking groups. It just is not my style of hiking. I am looking for someone who is at least 30 years of age because I am 60, someone who has at least 1 weekend day a month to hike, the health and time to do 4 hour hikes and who lives within one hour drive from Holland, Michigan. This is not a offer of money for you to hike with me but for you to find me a hiker. When I hike with a friend we go slow and really take in the sights. I have a wonderful , faithful marriage of 35 years and am only looking for others to hike with and nothing more. I am looking to do as many hikes as I can in the years I have left. I think you would find me to be good company as many people tell me. I am a God fearing man, honest as the day is long and kindhearted. People say I have a good sense of humor too. If you yourself are open to the ideal of a hiking partner lets meet over a meal to discuss the possibility of hiking together. I only hike from June 1 to October 31. If you are interested e-mail me at hik...@chartermi.net I own a Meet Up group for finding hikers. If interested, go to. https://www.meetup.com/West-Michigan-Hiking/members/ You will never be asked for a penny. On my hikes you are more than welcome to bring your kids, friends or dogs. I have found trails at over 200 hundred places all in the West Michigan area. You tell me what is your favorite type of landscape to hike in and I can show you hiking trails going through it. Go to my Meet Up group and look it over. If you decide you would like to join than I would like to meet you over a meal and discuss the possibility of hiking together first before allowing membership. Thanks and have a good day and may God bless. Thomas Hooker

Hello Stimson,I read your profile on line and I wanted to write in response to it. My name is Thomas Hooker and I saw on the net you are interested in hiking and wanted to see if by chance you might be interested in having another hiker to hike with. Let me tell you about who I am. I am a 61 year old family man who fell in love with the most unpopular activity there is in West Michigan. My family does not care for hiking and I do not enjoy doing it alone. I am looking to find others to hike with in a non group setting. I have done group hikes and find it is not my style of hiking. When I hike with a friend we go slow and really take in the sights. When my friend or I see something interesting along the trail or a real beautiful spot we stop and take as much time as we want to talk about and observe it. I Am a just a older man just looking to do as many hikes as I can in the years I have left. I think you would find me to be good company as many people tell me they do. I am a God fearing man, honest as the day is long and kind hearted. People say I have a good sense of humor too. If you like to do at least 4 hour hikes and are a good person with good morals and would be interested in the ideal of a hiking partner lets meet over a meal to discuss the possibility of hiking together.  I am only looking for those who have a true enjoyment of hiking, the time to hike on some weekends, and the health to hike. I only hike from June 1 to October 31. I own a Meet Up group for finding more hikers to join us. You will never be asked for a penny. In my group you are more than welcome to bring your kids, friends or dogs. I have found trails at over 200 hundred places all in the West Michigan area. If you decide you would like to join than I would like to meet you over a meal and discuss the possibility of hiking together first before allowing membership. Please give this some thought and may God bless. Thomas Hooker
