Pilot Mountain State Park
Mountain Section (Knob) and River Section (Yadkin River)
Today we (Myself and my Friend Toney) went to hike @ Pilot Mountain
State Park here in Piedmont North Carolina. It has been a about a week since
they opened the mountain section after a fire. We expected there would be
crowds, but it was rather thin. Soon it became apparent why. Most of the
mountain top trails were closed, including the main overlook to see the
Knob. Mostly the ground and underbrush was burnt. Some tree trunks were
scorched, but not to any great degree.

A sign on the barrier to the main overlook explained it was closed due
to burnt fencing and concern over some trees. In the photo below, you can
see the burnt fencing stacked behind the barrier.

Slightly disappointed, we went to the Yadkin River Section, which was
unaffected. We walked the Bean Shoals trail which follows a portion of the
Yadkin River.

Below is a short video of the trail walk. Caution: the filmwork has a
"Blair With Project" jerkiness, especially the part where I nearly tripped
over a root.

We decided to return by the railroad tracks. As we approached the hiking
trail, two horses, with riders of course, came down the trail and crossed
the trail. They were preceded by a large Labrador Retriever.

All in all, a pleasant little day hike.
