*1. The NRA* is notorious for rolling into a state and pushing
legislation that is not supported by local activists. Iowa is the
latest instance of the NRA cavalry riding in to snatch defeat from the
jaws of victory. In Iowa, Sheriffs have broad discretion in the
issuance or denial of concealed carry permits and Iowa GunVoters have
been rallying support for removing that discretion and moving the state
to "shall issue." Last year an Alaska-style bill fell just one vote
short of passage in the House so this year NRA has decided to get
involved. They have introduced a bill that does shift the law from "may
issue" to "shall issue," but their bill also raises the minimum age from
18 to 21, retains extensive mandatory training requirements, enhances
penalties for possession of a firearm while "under the influence" of
drugs or alcohol -- without defining exactly what "under the influence"
means -- expands the list of things which make a person ineligible to
receive a permit -- including an arrest for a violent crime, even if the
arrest was erroneous.
Details of the Iowa situation and NRA's misguided solution
can be found on our web site at www.FirearmsCoalition.org
<http://www.firearmscoalition.org/>.

*2. President Obama* has nominated yet another committed anti-rights
advocate to the Federal Judiciary. Wisconsin judge Louis Butler, who
gave gun control as an example of the "change" he expected from Obama
appointed judges and Justices, is expected to face confirmation from the
full Senate any day now. GunVoters are encouraged to contact their
Senators and let them know that a vote to confirm Butler is a vote
against gun owners and our rights.

*3. The National Shooting Sports Foundation* is raising an alarm about a
House bill reauthorizing and updating existing federal rules relating to
transportation of hazardous materials. The bill, H.R.4016, has the
potential to cause some problems for manufacturers of small arms
ammunition. With supply already being outstripped by demand, anything
that might cause delays for manufacturers is a serious concern.
Representative Sam Graves (R-MO) has an amendment which
addresses the industry's objections, but there is no guarantee that he
will be able to attach the amendment. NSSF is asking GunVoters to
contact the Chairman of the House Infrastructure and Transportation
Committee, Rep. James Oberstar (D-MN) to urge him to work to include the
Graves amendment. It would also be helpful to contact your own Rep. And
ask that they also support the Graves amendment.
We expect to have more information on this bill and the
Graves amendment Monday or Tuesday so stay tuned to
www.FirearmsCoalition.org <http://www.firearmscoalition.org/> for updates.

*Support The Firearms Coalition's **Five Dollar Fund Drive**!*

One of the challenges of activism as a business --
especially on the internet -- is the "information conundrum." You can't
guarantee a return unless you hold back information for paying
subscribers only, but you can't be fully effective unless you freely and
widely disseminate the important information. We have always addressed
this issue by offering virtually all of our services and information for
free with a request that readers and users support our efforts by
contributing as they find value. This system keeps the lights on and
the computers working, but not much more so we've decided to make a
small request: If you read our articles, get our email updates, or
appreciate our services we are asking that you send us a $5 bill. Just
put a $5 bill in an envelope and address it to:

The Firearms Coalition
PO Box 3313
Manassas, VA 20108

You can send a check if you prefer or go through our web
site and make the contribution electronically, and of course you can
send us more than $5 if you'd like -- or less -- but please do take a
moment to do just a little to keep us as we're working for your rights.
We do what we do because it's what we believe in and we love
it, but we can't keep up the fight -- and grow The Coalition -- if we
don't have the necessary funding. Just $5 from you can make a big
difference in our ability to get our message out and do the work that's
needed.
For less than the price of a double-mocha, low fat latte,
you could provide an exhausted rights activist with a weeks worth of
plain coffee to keep him running well into the wee hours of the morning...
Your $5 donation really will make a difference so please
give us that little boost of support as we face the challenges -- and
taxes -- that come with a new year.

As always:
Yours for the Second Amendment,

Jeff Knox
