Hi,
I'm new to this group and this is my first post. Why? I am taking an
internet technologies class and am being introduced to news group
technology. I was supposed to find a subject from the multitude of groups
available and I chose this one.

I have read several articles on geocaching and was interested, so here I am.
No need for anyone to respond since I'm sort of an interloper and don't have
a question right now. My assignment is to monitor this board for a few days
and see how active it is, and of course post a message and see if anyone
answers.

A nice day to all!

Thanks Scout! My prof will be happy to hear about your response :) He is a
big proponent of NNTP also.

But seriously, welcome to the dying art of Usenet.

Hi, Dimmy. This group is certainly less active than many, but that
can be a good thing; a low profile sometimes keeps the spam to a
minimum.

I recommend you try caching. While reading about it is fine, it's
hard for a writer to capture the exhilaration of actually finding the
hidden treasure. However, some of the articles in Today's Cacher
(www.todayscacher.com) come close. Consider that my shameless plug.
;)

Welcome aboard.

Dimmy, some newsgroups are more active than others...
alt.binary.pictures.motorcycles.sportbikes is VERY busy... others dont get a
lot of activity but still very helpful when you ask a question (like this
one)... and if you ever have a computer question, go to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support and it will be answered within
an hour... and don't even get me started on the .mp3 groups!!...

there are thousands of newsgroups to surf... any hobby you might be
interested in, i'm sure there is a group for you.

Unless, you know, it's a Macintosh question. It'll still be answered, but
you won't like the answer.

kind of GPS as i have (so i can help him with any questions) or one that is
so simple to use he wont just put it in his sock drawer and forget about

Wow! I didn't expect this much activity from my message- thanks for taking
the time to reply.

I am not big brother- my only mission is to report on activity in terms of
volume, not content, so you can all relax. I get the feeling my prof spends
quite a bit of time on different news groups. He also said you can get an
answer on almost any topic- computers especially- if you have a specific
question/problem.

There are 83 students in my class- Master of Library Information Science at
Universtity of Washington Seattle and they are all lurking around here
somewhere. I was astounded at the number of newsgroup topics my ISP lets me
access, so we are probably scattered far and wide.

I have never been caching- maybe you all can inspire me over the next few
days. And, stats on this newsgroup might win me some points, thanks :)

I find sci.geo.satellite-nav a good newsgroup coupled with this one.
Also quite busy!

To be honest, I started with the eTrex (easy to use, but offers few
features), but am now using a much older Magellan 410. The eTrex
line's buttons are hard to press, which is an issue for someone with
disabilities. It also bounces signal more than my older Maggie. I'll
hang onto the eTrex for (rare) occasions when I have someone to cache
with me, but I much prefer my dino-Maggie GPSr; bigger screen,
easy-to-press buttons, with a good signal lock under cover.

I live in TN, so I am too far to help, but I am sure there are some local
cache hunters in your area that would be more than happy to take you on a
run one day! That way you will see what it is all about without having to
actually invest in any equipment or anything. Can't hurt to ask...

Dennis

Oh no, I just top posted didn't I? I guess I get a D in this class...

Well, great to have you on board for the coming time.
One suggestion, it is customary on Usenet to post below the quote, it
makes posts better readable. Cut out the parts of the quote you do not
reply on. There is a FAQ somewhere.
Another suggestion, Please munge your e-mail address else it will be
harvested by spammers.
Some suggestions: dimitri@windjack_removethis.com or
dim...@windjack.com.invalid

> I am not big brother- my only mission is to report on activity in

Well to inform you, all your posts are stored in the database of
Google, so big brother is always lurking.
Check out
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=alt.rec.geocaching
http://netscan.research.microsoft.com/reportcard.asp?timespan=m&searchdate=6/13/2004&NGID=206725&searchfor=alt.rec.geocaching
That last one is realy scary, but is always has a gap of half a year.

So true. Either one knows the answer or one knows where to look
further. We (TINW) know everything ;-)

I hope they did not end up in Troll infested newsgroups.

Well, you already had some suggestions on where to get additional info
on the subject.
My interest, being surprised by the views someone else previously has
discovered.
I'll get on those stats for you in a mo.

In about two weeks day I can make one for a year. My cache goes back
to Oct 11, 2003
The newsreaders ranking is incorrect in all the stats I gave. I don't
have full headers of all the posts.

Thanks 2Rowdy,

very kind of you to post the stats!

And thanks to everyone else who replied. I am buried in work at the moment,
so don't know if I'll be able to take up a new activity for awhile, but
geocaching does sound like fun.

You're welcome.
There is a lot of info on www.geocaching.com. Their service is free
( ) and there is a forum on their website.
Most conversation about geocaching takes place there.

Some time ago the website wanted to go commercial. The caches hidden
would be behind a paywall though placed by volouteers (typo). That
direction caused a rough and it never really happened though some
services need payment now.
The offspinn of that rough was this newsgroup. A place where there is
freedom of speech and no moderator can ban anyone.
This newsgroup was created by Choberiba aka Chobeo.
Some history links:
http://www.guysnamedkim.com/geocache/geocache_history.html
http://geocaching.gpsgames.org/history/

There are now also alternatives to the mentioned website where people
can *hide* a stash and log a find.
http://www.navicache.com/

The Germans have a website (www.geocaching.de) but don't have a forum
installed since there is no need for it. They direct their audience to
this newsgroup through Google. That's why there there is much [de]
tagged traffic in the newsgroup.

Enjoy reading.

Me thinks you got geocaching forums and usenet mixed up!

Which one has lackey "moderators" again? Which one has threads about
non-geocaching.com listing sites mysteriously disappear? And where do
jomarac5 and his band of assholes post?

And which one would give me an official reprimand for calling an asshole
an asshole?

Yeah, I thought I had it right.

A quick look at the posts you will find that this group has half been taken
over by Germans. Not necessarily a bad thing but it is read world wide (i.e.
outside America).
having said that, I will say a big G'day from Australia.
