I have been wanting to try geocaching for quite a whilem but I have not been
able to afford a GPS. I finally bought the Garmin GPSmap 60 and it seems to
be a decent little model.
Anyone have experience with this model? How easy is it to find maps for it
for travelling?
I thank you for any feedback.
For the most part, you will need to buy commercial maps for around
$100 and up. But this will cover the entire US and probably Canada
(assuming you are in the US). I don't know about maps elsewhere. I
have read that depending on where you are in other places like SE
Asia, the maps are not so good and harder to find.
There are some ways to load your own maps into the GPS receiver, but
it can be a bit tricky to learn how to do it.
When I bought my GPSmap 60, it came with City Navigator Europe v8.
So I am happy with that. But read on.
But pricing of City Navigator Europe v8 over here is around 150 Euro's.
Might be that you can aquire it for a more reasonalble price, but is it
worth it.
1. Because of the gray/gray/gray/gray and smal display it is not the perfect
display for car navigation.
2. There is no voice directing you where to go.
3. Navigation (recalculating) the route is not very fast, so after taking a
wrong turn it takes some time to get new instructions.
4. Searching of POI is not very comfortable on the GPSmap 60.
5. MAYOR ! MAYOR ! MAYOR ! The memory of the map 60 is only 24 MB. Most
chunks in City Navigator are about 8 Mb or more, so the unit can only hold 2
or 3 chunks. So you can not travel over a large distance and have the map
material handy. If traveling over a small distance you might be missing a
corner.
6. Reception of the unit is fair, but not very good in a car in Urban
canions. So in city's you loose the signal when you need it the most.
So my advise would be to spend the money on a dedicated car system if you
want carnavigation. The GPSmap60 is more intended for outdoor use. The
memory of the GPSmap60 is small and not realy suetable of holding maps. Also
the display is limited.
Outdoor and outdoor maps on the GPSmap60, for example Topo maps. Well it can
not hold a lot and the maps are to detailled for the display.
So I have a GPSmap60 to do tracking and Geocaching and it's even a very
fancy bicycle computer. (Or speedo meter on a bike, car, boot, train, plane,
skiing or other 'speed' sport.).
I have a cheap car navigation system for traveling by car. (Even the
cheapest models from TomTom or Garmin offer far better functionality for car
traveling than most handheld GPS models. Things like large colour touch
screen and voice prompting).

I paid about $140 for it so I know its not going to do as much as say the
$400 models. I have noticed that it can map smaller routes so maybe if I
wanted to get directions from like an airport to the hotel or whatnot.
(Correct me if I am wrong.)
Again, I mainly wanted to do geocaching. Something me, my wife and son can
do that together on weekends.
But thanks for the feedback. Maybe someday when we have more money, we will
be able to afford a better one for the car.

PS - My daughter and Me have already logged seven caches, and we are
hopelessly hooked on geo-caching!
