How many out there have combined geocaching with their bicycles? I figure
this can't be a new idea, but I'm about to start doing it. I'll use the
bicycle to get top trailheads and on the outback until terrain dictates I
need to dismount. Since my 60 CSx attaches to the bike with a quick release,
seems like a natural to me.

I'd like to hear about your experiences with this combination . . .

Many of the caches that I have found are located along paved hiking/
biking trails.
I wish I had been on a bike.

Many caches are set up by bikers and can be done either on foot or by bike.
The park system east of Tampa (we live in TN but cache in FL frequently) has
had a few bike multis that take you on a 15 to 17 mile roundabout to find
the final, some of the way is on paved bike trails and some on somewhat
technical dirt trails. Many cities have paved bike trails that use to be
railroad tracks and the cachers have placed caches all along them. You have
heard the term cache run? well these got to be bike runs or rail runs,
because you can sure get a lot of caches along these paths. But I digress,
yes we have combined geocaching with biking.

Thanks for everyone's reply! Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun . . .
and that's all that counts, isn't it?

I got started geocaching with my mountain bike when my truck broke down.
Now I use my bike to find nearly all my caches.
I certainly use it to hide all mine. I can take it into the woods and other
"remote" areas
I get some complaints from fellow cachers that don't have bike that they're
being left out,
but it's not like I can ride 20 miles to an event or to snag a FTF in the
middle of the night.
I've been enjoying the out of doors and even lost some weight and brought
down my blood pressure.
I could use a mounted GPSr unit like yours!

Why not crawl then?

Despite what the good? doctor posted (Physician, heal thyself!), I presume
you mean slower as opposed to a motorized vehicle.

I use mine mainly for non-urban caching, but I can see the advantage in an
urban setting too. Given the cost of gas, yeah, I can bike to several caches
in one day a LOT cheaper!

I've been having a lot of fun learning off road techniques. I also just
missed a great opportunity over the weekend to claim my second TerraCache
(similar concept, different website). I was doing a fund raiser bike-a-thon
and was passing a landmark. The name caught my eye , so I checked my GPS,
and sure enough, there was a cache near by. Sadly, there were some people
fishing right about where I suspected the cache to be. Rather than expose
the cache, and kill my ride time goal, I by passed the find. Now that I know
about where it is . . . another weekend perhaps. BTW, I missed my goal
time, a personal thing and in no way connected with the ride results, by
just two minutes! Oh well, another time maybe.

Our best place for this is in Devon, a disused railway has been replaced by
a cycle path that follows the Devon coast for many miles, with handy cycle
hire shop and cafes. called the Tarka Trail, its a caching haven!
