I am looking at a 10x12 Academy Broadway dome from Sports Authority for
about $100 vs a Coleman Family dome 10x10 from Campmor for about $120.

Any feedback on quality, durability, etc of Academy Broadway vs. Coleman
tents? We use our tent about 4-5 times a year and don't want to get wet
when it rains.

Thanks!

Then, neither Academy Broadway or Coleman is the answer.

They'll both give you some weather resistence but in the end, after a hard
rain, you will get leaking.

Furthermore, it isn't the waterproofing that isn't very good, its the
rainfly that these typically offer. Both these have small rainflys that
dont COMPLETELY. Finally, the stitching and zippers on these aren't of a
very high quality.

Don't get me wrong, if you really only have the budget for these, go for it.
But be prepared to only get a couple years out of it.

For a much better 'bang for your buck' consider spending a little more for
a Eureka or Wenzel product. You won't be sorry you spent the extra few
bucks when you realize you get many more years use out of them.

I've always had good luck with Hilary tents. I started with a medium
size, then got a small one, now have a large one. I use each for
different purposes. None of mine leak at all. I only camp two to three
times a year, so I didn't need or want a real expensive tent. I also
put a tent up in the back yard several times a year. It's my escape
from the kids and reality. You have to know the secret password to

We own a Coleman 10x10 tent and we never had any problems in the rain. Get
the biggest Coleman you can then to give yourself extra protection buy 1 of
those cheap tarps to go over a table, put it over the tent. That's what all
our tent friends and they never get wet.

I imagine WHERE you are going to be camping makes a difference. I am
taking a hiking/pack trip into central Wyoming, the prairies, no
trees, little grass, so little rain. I bought a cheap-o pup tent for
20 bucks and am hoping it'll keep the bugs off of me and the rare
thunderstorms for getting me wet. Plus it weighs like 3 lbs! It
probably wouldn't stand up to the wet season in the Cascades, though!
So, if you are going to a windy place, one type of tent would be
better than another, or a wet place, or a very buggy place. You get
the idea. For a standard camping trip to a moderate climate, I'll bet
either one would do fine. When I started tent-shopping I was shocked
to see little one man bivys for 3 and 4 hundred dollars! Get what you
like, keeping it's main qualities in mind. I brought home a little 2
man dome only to discover that my big cozy Coleman king-size sleeping
bag couldn't fit in it! It was too long (the bag) so I got the pup
tent, and the bag just about fills it side-to-side, but there's a
couple feet of space at either head or foot for my pack.

You might be better off looking for a good sale on a good tent. Try the
following places online: www.gear.com, www.sierratradingpost.com, rei's
outlet store (sorry don't know the url). I got a nice Kelty campsite 6 (last
year's model) for $150 that way. You gotta check gear.com pretty much daily,
as well as the REI site since they have daily specials. Good luck.
