We will be spending a couple days in Catskills and Adirondack during the
middle of August.
We would like some recommendations on camp grounds with good hiking trails
near by. We would also like to avoid areas that have heavy RV use.
We prefer car-camping sites or walk-in sites.

If you don't need hookups, I'd recommend some of the New York State DEC
campgrounds in the Adirondacks.

A nice little (60 sites) DEC campground is Lake Durant near Blue
mountain. The sites are mainly private, and many are lakeside (site #50
was our favorite). Lake Durant is a nice lake for canoeing.

Plenty of hiking opportunities in the area, including Blue Mountain,
Castle Rock and many others. Get the book "50 Hikes in the Adirondacks"
for more hikes.

We've visited a lot of parks in the area, so feel free to email with
specific questions ...

I love Lake Durant. The only problem I have with it is the highway noise
from Rt. 28 across the lake.

I'm thinking of going to Lake Harris near Newcomb, or Lewey Lake. Have you
camped at either? If so, what are the sites like? Any recommendations for
good sites?

I like tent sites that are on the water, fairly private, and not too windy.
We camped on Sacandaga Lake (Moffitt Beach campground) recently, and we had
a beautiful site (114) but the wind blew a gale across the lake constantly
during the day.

We were at the Lake Placid KOA in July and absolutely loved it...We were right
at the base of Whiteface Mt. and the Ausable river runs right by the
campground...
