In the Angeles National Forest, within the San Gabriel River Ranger
District of the United States Forest Service, there is a popular nature
trail behind the Environmental Education Center. Many thousands of
city kids are bused up into the mountains to have an opportunity to get
out of the stinking city for a while, a chance to see that the world is
more than just concrete, cars, illegal narcotics, noise, and stink.
For about two years, the San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders and a
steady stream of volunteers from Boy Scouts, church groups, High School
volunteer clubs, (and so many others) have worked on building the lower
bridge which crosses the creek to make the entire nature trail a safe
and easy hike for small children. In two weeks, the lower bridge should
be completed (photographs offered in the URL.)
The trail winds along a number of "micro environments," including
fern-covered meadow, groves of ancient oak, relatively new pine trees,
and Sun-baked desert. The trail boasts Southern Pacific Rattle Snakes,
deer, owls, squirrels, bobcats (on rare occasion) and California black
bears (on even more rare occasion.)
