Approved Contractors on the Web!

The League of California Homeowners (http://www.homeowners.org) provides
a service which allows a homeowner who is planning to do remodeling work
to have a background check performed on their contractor before they sign
a contract. The League can do a background check on any licensed
contractor engaged in residential renovation work in California. As a
public service, The League has begun to develop a list of “special
contractors” who have been “Approved” by our association. You may get a
copy of this list by visiting our web site. First, here is what we do to
check out the contractor before they can be approved:

After contacting the Contractor State License Board (CSLB) to make sure
the contractor has a valid license and is bonded, The League does the
following:
1. Investigates to find out if the contractor has ever been involved in
litigation with a customer or another contractor.
2. Check to see whether or not there have been any liens filed against
the contractor during the past three years.
3. Evaluates a TRW report to determine the credit worthiness of the
contractors business. (Our “Approved” contractors must give us special
permission for this report).
4. Verifies that the contractor has both general liability and workers
compensation insurance.
5. Interviews a minimum of six customer references.
6. Interviews three business references, which includes their primary
material supplier.

The League has a list of contractors who have passed all of these tests
and who have been APPROVED by the association. The list is limited to
Southern California, and can be found by visiting our web site at
http://www.homeowners.org be sure to look for the page titled
“contractors.”

The League of California Homeowners is a non-profit consumer information
organization. Our list will grow over the coming months and years.
Besure to visit again in the future to find additional contractors.
If you know of a contractor who might qualify to be on our list, send us
their name, phone number and address and we will make contact with them
by through the mail.
