Two men were arrested after the seizure, which Police Commissioner Bernard B.
Kerik said was the largest ever in New York City. Mr. Kerik, Mayor Rudolph W.
Giuliani and Richard A. Brown, the Queens district attorney, held a news
conference to announce the seizure. The police also confiscated $187,000 in
cash.
Mr. Brown said the two men, David Roash, 28, and Israel Ashkenazi, 25, both
Israeli citizens, were charged with several drug offenses. If convicted they
could be sentenced to eight and a third years to life in prison.
Mr. Kerik said detectives from the Queens narcotics unit who were investigating
Ecstasy dealing had identified the men as major wholesale drug dealers and
learned that they had entered the United States on May 22. Their lease for the
studio apartment where the drugs were seized took effect June 1, he said. The
detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment, which is at 1 West
Street and overlooks Battery Park. They searched it about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Mr.
Kerik said. They found the pink, white and light blue pills packed into eight
duffle bags and a suitcase.
"There are a million less Ecstasy pills in the city that won't get to our kids,
to the clubs and schoolyards," Mr. Kerik said.
At the news conference at 1 Police Plaza, where the tablets were displayed
across a table, Mr. Giuliani said, "When you look at these pills, they look
harmless, but they are very, very dangerous substances that can in fact be fatal
under some circumstances."
The drug sells in nightclubs and on the street for $20 to $40 a tablet. Because
the police were still counting the pills and said the number could rise well
above one million, they estimated the value of the drugs at $40 million.

They had $40 mil in drugs and didn't have the fire power to protect it?

That's because there the citizens are unarmed. If this happened weekly in the U.S., a
damn civil war about break out. Cops only bust those who pose no real significant
threat (ie: armed with one or two guns, etc.).
like ANYONE is going to go out to the clubs and flog a million pills,
one at a time .. they'd prolly bulk sell 50,000 pills for like ..
$25,000 - $50,000 at most. That's $40 million in value not to the
smugglers, but spread throughout the entire distribution chain and
every step that is in that chain...

It is standard police procedure to value the drugs seized at
"street prices" [retail] rather then their actual value - a
deceptive tactic at best... similar to saying the Code red worm is a
threat to the Internet when in actual fact it is only a threat to
poorly designed Micro$soft products.
I have no Idea what the actual value of the chemicals involved in
making 50,000 pills of E would be... but I bet it's pretty small
dollar wise. By valuing the drugs at the retail price, the cops
look good at news conferences when they mention the value of the
drugs seized, and hat also helps get harsher sentences for the
dealers.

I'm not sure what the laws on poppy cultivation are here in the US, but
if it's anything like the marijuana laws then it's a dangerous
undertaking indeed! Here's the US law according to a High Times
magazine I happen to have in my hand:
"Here in the US the federal sentencing regulations are draconian. If
the cultivator has a total of 49 plants or less, for sentencing purposes
each plant is considered 100 grams unless it weighs more, in which case
the higher number will be used. If there are 50 plants or more, each
plant is considered 1000 grams (a kilo) for sentencing purposes no
matter what size they are (unless they weigh more) even if they're just
seedlings. If there are 100 or more plants in the garden, the federal
laws stipulate a five-year-minimum sentence with 15% off (55 days a
year) for good behavior."
A thousand grams per plant?? God I'd kill for a field of those suckers!
IME a plant grown indoors will yield on average of 1/4 to 1/2 oz unless
you're an expert. For someone who's just learning the yield is often
even less. I can't imagine getting busted with 100 seedlings and being
charged with 100 kilos!

i usually pay aroun $30-40 Aus for mine (altho the last batch was $28).
$8 bucks is bordering on london prices, where 6-7 pounds can get you a pill.
even in exchanges, thats about $14 US...
